  1. Well for a $2500 speaker you would expect a decent set of feet and posts, comon ive seen $500 dollar speakers witk better post and feet than these! I donno I just like having a high quality post I know its not gonna make it sound better, just makes me feel better and they also dont loosen up as easy as the Klipsch one, as for the feet they are just hopeless. Im thinking of trying out some sound anchor bases.
  2. Im using an Exposure XV integrated. But Im also thinking of trying a few differant amps till I find the best match. I was thinking of trying out an older Musical Fidelity A2 which is 25 watts class A, also wanted to try out a Naim Nait 3, my firend has one and is going to bring it over one day to see how it comparred to the Exposure. Im hoping one of these great little integrateds will work well. I have been veryhappy with the Exposure with my RF-3's so they should work fine with the 7's. thanks
  3. Ok I just bought a pair of RF-7's to replace my RF-3's. I am very happy with them so far and they havent even been broken in yet. My question is, how much power do the RF-7's really need. Ive seen people in here reccomending 200 watt bryston amps for the RF-7's, am I the only one who thinks this is overkill?? Shouldnt they really only need like 25-50 watts of good clean high current power?? I ran my RF-3's off of a very good quality 40 watt integrated amplifier and had more than enough power. Do the RF-7's require more power for some reason?? if anything I would think they would need less power since they are more sensitive. I know they do need some current since they dip down to about 3 ohms. But as long as your using a good quality amp that can handle the 3ohm load is there really a need for more than around 50 watts if you have a normal sized room?? Why all ther reccomendations for big power amps. Isnt one oif the great things about Klipsch their high sensitivity, thus not requiring tons of power?? Im just a little confused about the reccomendations ive seen on this forum. Some reccomend 3 watt SET amps and other say your speakers really wont sing unless you have 200 watts! Very confusing. Is there any reason I should think about upgrading my amp to something more powerful?? Thanks frank
  4. I just bought a pair of RF-7's and am sorry to see that they use the crappy binding post on them like they do on all thier other speakers. you would think at that price they could put in some decent posts. Anyways, has anyone upgraded them with something better?? How much of a job is it? i havent opened mine up yet to see what it looks like in there. id really like to put a nice set of WBT's or Cardas posts on them. Is it possible. Also any ideas on a replacement for the plastic feet they come with. i really like Klipsch but sometimes I wonder about them. A $2500 speaker with palstic binding post and feet, would it really cost that much more to put on a decent set of all metal post and footers....geez. Id pay anopther $100 for these things and I think most people would agree. I could understand it with my RF-3's since they were very budget oreiented but not on your top of the line speaker. Cmon Klipsch wake up!
  5. a 4in horn midrange?? Is that correct?? You would think they would use a 2in comprssion driver for the mids like the Khorns?? Doesnt look like a 4in driver in the pics?? Wouldnt a 4in driver require a much bigger horn than the pictures show?? Is it a 4in cone driver or some type of dome midrange?? Seems very promising, cant wait for them to come out. These have the potential to be the best Klispch speaker ever made. They better put some decnt binding post on them and some decent footers for the price they are asking. i sstill cant believe the crap they use on the RF-7's.
  6. A great tube amp for a beginer would be the Jolida 102b. Its inexpensive $549 and uses inexpensive el84 and 12ax7 tubes. i would say this is a much better idea than buying a used 30-40 year old tube amplifier. You never know what your getting with used stuff espcially older used stuff. The Jolida will be brand new with a warranty and will sound great. This amp has no business sounding as good as it does for that price. You would be hard pressed to find an amp even for $500 on the used market that will be much better. This is the perfect amp for a tube newby. Lots of people will reccomend the vintage stuff and theres nothing wrong with that but I think for a guy whos never used tubes before your better off with something new.
  7. Someone in another post said something about a new Klipsch premier series that is due out at the end of the year?? Anyone know anything about this?? Will they be abpve or below the Reference series??
  8. What is the Klipsch premiere series?? I havent heard anything about these?? Can you guys fill me in. Will this be step above the Reference line??
  9. I finally decided to get the RF-7's, I just got them the other day and got a great deal on them. I havent gotten a chance to get them hooked up yet. So once they are hooked up and broken in for a good week Ill let you guys know how they turned out. I cant wait!! How long should I expect for them to break in, I know my RF-3's took a while to really open up and for the bass to come through and the highs to smooth out. Any ideas on how long??
  10. I dont understand all the people who spend big bucks paying someone to upgrade thier xovers. If you can solder you can do it urelf for way less money. Nothing against Dean, but its true. All ya gotta do is basically take the Xover our unsolder the old caps and replace them with something better like Auricaps or Hovlands. If you want you can also replace the resitors with some high quality Mills or similar. Its very easy, i did the Xovers on myRF-3's and it definitly made them sound better, more detail and smoother sound. Again nothing against DEAN as his sevice is very reaonable for the people who dont feel omfortable doing it themselves.
  11. I could see someone who has a wife diong something like this to their Khorns, kinda trying to camoflouge them..lol Hunny they arent speakers, i swear..!
  12. Why on earth would you need 400 watts with a pair of Khorns?? Thats a little ridiculous..lol. For some reason Ive always found lower powered SS amps to sound better than higher powered ones. Im not sure why this is. May have to do with having only a single pair of output transistors or even a single one in a single ended design. Kinda like how a SE tube amp sounds better than PP. Not sure why but they just do. Ive always liked the sound of the smaller SS amps if the speakers didnt need much power like Klipsch. Anyone else feel that way?? Obviously if you have a difficult speaker load you eed the power but Im talking about speakers like Klipsch were you only need 50 watts or less.
  13. Another o[ption would be to pick up a brand new Jolida 102b for $549. This way you have soemthing brand new with a waranty. These amps sound great too, and theres plenty of upgrades you can do in the future to make them even better, I think personally this is the way I would go. You can beet a brand new tube integrated for under $600 that sounds really good. Its good for about 15 or 20 watts per channel froma pair of el84's, plenty of power for your speakers. Just an idea, I think your better of going with a new amp. If you buy something 40 years old you never really know what your getting especially if you buiy of ebay. Be careful with the older stuff unless you know the previous owner and know he/she took good care of it.
  14. I have an old Fisher 500c which I brought back to spec and it works very well with Klipsch. Fisher made some damn good recievers back then and they can be had for pretty cheap on the used market. Just make sure you replace any aging caps and the selenium rectifier. You can probably find one that has been restored back to spec for around $500, or one that needs some work for as little as $100. All you would have to do is get one of the restoration kits from the Fisher doctor if you can solder or send it to one of the companies that does restorations of this stuff.
  15. Just curious if any other "flatearthers" hang out on this forum?? Ive found that Klipsch works very well with some of the "flatearth" type components. Im not sure what it is about the speakers, but in combination with Naim or Exposure they are magical for rock music. Very involving and musical, and very fast with great transients. I know Klipsch is an odd combo with this kinda stuff but ive found it to work very well together. The warmth and smoothness of Exposure and Naim type stuff matched very well with the upfront bright sound of the Klipsch's. And the fact that they need very little power doesnt hurt either.
  16. I think most companies these days are shying away to the seperate transport/DAC. Since it has been established that jitter has alot to do with sound quality I think a one box player is a better solution. If you look at thehigh end digital stuff out today a majority of it is single box players. I think at the price you looking at ($3000) your gonna be hard pressed to find a transport and DAC. Most really good transports and DACs cost almost #k each. The only way I would reccomend a DAC is if your using an inexpensive or older player and want to get better sound, then your best bet is to get yourself one of the nice $500-$1000 budget DACs that uses current technology. This most likely wont compete with the players you are considering, but its a good way to get good sound on a budget if your player is old or not so good(most DVD players and inexpensive cd players). Stick to the players you are looking at they are all very good, and dont forget the source is the second mosyt important compnent in youe system some will argue its the most important, but I still say speakers are most important. Remeber garbage in equals garbage out. Dont skimp on your source.
  17. All three are excellent players, you wont be able to do any better for the price with a seperate transport/DAC. You wuld have to spend considerably more to beat these players. The MF A5 may be best with klipsch since it uses tubes in the output stage which should give a bit of warmth. The Ayre player is a little dry sounding. The Cary is also a great player with a warmer sound. It really deopends on what you like best I would go listen to them all and see what you like. Another few to check out are the Naim CD5x esp All of these are great players you wont be disapointed.ecially if your into rock music and also the Arcam cd33.
  18. I am mostly a Rock and Alternative guy so Im guessing the RF-7's are the way to go. Have any of you guys heard of a company called Sptech?? They make some very interesting monitor speakers using a short waveguide type horn and 8in aluminum woofer. Look very intereting. Anyone heard them?? http://www.tweekgeek.com/product.asp?pf_id=TimePiece
  19. I know I have to hear the speaker first, but that will be a bit hard since they dont makle Cornwalls anymore and I dont know anyone nearbye that has some. this is really why I was asking. If I could go out and listen to them myself I wouldnt have to ask. I know I like the Reference ound, but I have heard good things about the Cornwalls as well, so I figure I may be able to save a bit of money. Thanks for the people that acttually give some good information not like the few that just seem to like to argue.
  20. You can make your own anti cable for much less. Goto Ratshack and pick up some magnet wire. You can get a pack with three differant gauges. try all three which ever sounds best add some spades or bananas and your set for a few bucks. I have tried this and it does sound pretty damn good surprisingly, never thought two skinny 22ga wires could be any good.
  21. Your right about the inductance thing , Im sorry I got it mixed up. Thanks frank
  22. I am starting to lean towards the Cornwalls a little bit more, alot of people I have spoke to say that they are better than the rf-7's with there three way design. Most have said using a cone 10in speaker up to 2000hz is not as good as the Cornwalls mid and hig frq horns, with the cone speaker just for the bass. I would tend to agree that on paper this makes sence, but in the real world it may be a differant story. How much could I expect to spend on a mint pari of Cornwalls as new as possible hopefully from the 80's. When did they stop making them?? I know I saw a nice pair of ebay from 89 in mint shape fro around $800. I would save a hell of alot of money over the rf-7's. Im kinda torn between newer technology and looks of the Rf-7 and classic 3 way design of the Cornwalls. I bet P. Klipsch wouldnt have ever made a speaker like the RF-7 with a cone speaker operating up to 2000hz especially not as his flagshipp speaker.
  23. See I dont understand spending more on cables than your whole system is worth, that makes no sence. You need to balance everything. If you spend $1000 on your system zip cord will most likely be fine but if you have a nicer $5 or $10k system dont use zipcord you wont let your system reach its full potential. BTW why didnt you spend the $1500 on better speakers?? You woulda got alot more improvement tha the wires.
  24. I dont mean in age I mean in quality, example dont spend $2 on wire to hook up your $10000 system. Your system should be balanced.
  25. have considered the Audioquest wire since its on sale from HCM and is kinda cheap I only need 6 or 8ft and its quite affordable. I would have top see if it will work with my amplifier. Exposure amps like Naim and Linn are very sensitive to inductance since they dont use and zoble network on thier outputs. This has good and bad points, the good is better sound, the bad is sensitivity to cables. They dont like high inductance cables like Kimber 8tc will not work well with the amp but something with the + and _ seperated works fine. Do you know if the audioquest cable has seperate runs for the + and - of is it in the same cable? thanks frank
