  1. Ok maybe not double but they are about $1200-$1400 more which is a pretty big chunk of change. Im not putting down your amps, no need to get defensive, Im sure they are very good and have heard lots of great thoings about them. Im just saying that for the money the Stingray is a good deal, and Manley is very highley regarded in the hifi tube comunity. I cant afford the Blueberry/VRD combo right now which is what I really want. So I am going to try out the Manley amp which I can get for $1200 on the used market, maybe I will be prefectly happy with it and wont need to spend the extra money for the Blueberry/VRd. Didnt mean to make it seem like I was putting down your amp, just wanted to make the point thats theres other very good amps out there. BTW you have to admit the Stingray looks cool...
  2. The specs dont mean a damn thing. You could have a speaker that measures like crap and sounds awesome. So just listen and what ever sounds good for you is the speaker you should buy. People get all caught up in specs that dont mean a thing. Some speaker makers will claim a -3b of like 35hz but you dfont know if this is with the speaker stuck in the corner or in the middle of a large room, that will make a huge differance. Ive heard that ATC measures the bass limits of its speakers in the middle of its large warehouse, so they will look like they dont have much low bass extention on paper but when you put them in a normal sized room you will get more extended low bass
  3. Depends on what you listen to. If you listen to alot of lighter music go wwith the SET youll love it. But if you like to rock you wont like the SET and will be better off with a higher powered PP amp.
  4. I donno guys Ive heard an aweful lot of good stuff about the Stingray and heard some of manleys higher end stuff at the HE 2005 NYC show and it was very impressive. For $2200 I donno if you can beet the Stingray for rock. Dont forget the Bluberry/VRD is Double it price so chances are it will be better, question is, if it $2200 better!
  5. My advice is to not even look at the specs at all. Just listen to the speakers and choose what you like best. You could get a pair of RF-35's for $500 on Audiogon.com or ebay. The NAD is a great amplifier proly a bit better than the Marantz. Check Audiogon.com you might be able to get smething used a step above the NAD. I listed a few amps that have a nice smooth sound that should mate well with the Klipschs and will be a pretty big step up from the NAD amp. Audio Analogue pucini Audio Refinement Complete Exposure 2010 Arcam A75 Rega Brio Jolida 102b Consonance Cyber10
  6. WellIf I dont get the Manley I might just save up for a Blueberry/vrd combo which is probably even better since they are pretty much made for Klipsch and rock music. A bit more expensive though a used Stingeray is only $1500 the Blueberry/VRD is around $4000. I wonder if its worth the extra dough? Manley is also a very highly respected name in tube audio, and they are made to sound good on rock as well, oh well decisions, decisions...lol May as well check out the Manley fiirst maybe I can save myself a few grand. Thanks for the help guys frank
  7. Do you guys think my current system is up to the task of the RF-7's? I tend to think that my amp and source are at least on the same level of the Klipschs. I use an Ah! Tjoeb 4000/upsampled/NOS Seimens 7308, Exposure XV integrated amp, Straightwire Serenade interconnect, Music and Sound Black speaker cables. I may try a manley Stingray integrated in the near future to see how I like tubes with the system. But i have been very happy with my system with the RF-3's and have never had aproblem with brightness or harshness at all that some people complain about. i think the problem is that people use cheap recievers and dvd player with there Klipschs and then comlain they sound harsh and bright. My experience is that DVD players and recievers kinda suck for playing music.
  8. No I never said I wanted to get away from the SS sound. I am actually very happy with the sound of my SS amp with the Klipsch's. I use an Ah! Tjoeb 4000/upsampled w/seimens7308, Exposure XV integrated and Straightwire cables. The sound isnt bright or harsh at all more like smooth and detailed and very punchy. I just thought I would give tubes a try again. I had tried a low powered 300b SET amp and it just wasnt my cup of tea, it didnt have the balls to play rock music. So I figure let me try a higher power PP tube amp and see how it works out, I chose the Stingray especially because they say it has alot of the good qualities of SS, its not overly rolled off and polite like some tube amps. I would like to keep the punchy detailed sound of SS and add a bit of the tube warmth and natrualness. And anyone who says 5 or 10 watts is enough to play heavy rock with Klipsch is out of thier mind, I have found you need at least 25 watts to really get going.
  9. Yes I upgraded all the Caps with Auricaps and the resistor to a mills. It definitly gave me a sweeter high end. I see that you do mods to the RF-7's Xovers. Can you tell me a little about what you do and how much it cost?? So the RF-7's are far better than the RF-3's?? Will my current system be up to the job of driving the 7's?? I was also thinking of possibly trying out a tube integrated(Manley Stingray) in place of my Exposure XV integrated to see how I like tubes. Thanks frank
  10. I dont see why it wouldnt work well. The Stingray is a very well regarded tube integrated. It is supposed to be one of the best around for rock music. Any other ideas on tube integrateds that would work well with the RF-7's mainly for rock n roll?? Was also considering amps from Rogue, VTL, Audiomat...ect I did use an 8watt SET 300b Cary amp at one time but it wasnt my cup of tea, it just wasnt puncy enough for my musical taste. i figure a slightly more powerful PP amp of 30-50 watts should do the job. Thanks frank
  11. I will be upgrading to the RF-7's from the RF-3's soon and I was thinking of trying out a tube integrated amp in place of my SS Exposure XV. The Expposure is great with the Klipsch's warm laid back and punchy. But I would like to try tubes out for a change. I am a bit worried about the RF-7's dip down to 3ohms being a problem with a tube amp?? Will the RF-7's do ok with tubes?? Has anyone tried the Manley Labs Stingray with there RF-7's?? Or do you guys know of a better tube integrated for the RF-7's that I should check out?? Thanks frank
  12. I am thinking of upgrading my RF-3's to some RF-7's. I feel the RF-3's are the week link my system and I think the RF-7's will solve this. What can I expect from the RF-7's compared to the RF-3's?? The rest of my system is very good and would probably be good enough to drive even higher end speakers than the Klipsch's, but I listen mainly to rock and I find Klipsch to be best with rock music. Just curious in what ways he RF-7's are better than the 3's?? Thanks Ah! Super Tjoeb 4000/upsampled w/Seimens 7308 Exposure XV integrated amp Klipsch RF-3 w/upgraded xovers Auricaps and Mills resistors Straightwire Serenade interconnect Music & Sound Black speaker cables double bi-wire
  13. Ah! Super Tjoeb 4000 $897 if you can push your budget another $349 get the upsampled version which is even better and get some NOS Seimens 7308 tubes. This player is awesome very detailed, but not bright or harsh at all the tubes give it some of that tube warmth with out giving up and detail. I havent found a player that was better than my Upsampled Super Tjoeb w/Seimns 7308's for under $2000.
  14. I dont understand all the people who buy a really nice revealing speaker like the RF-7's and then hook them up to a reciver and DVD player and expect to get good sound on 2 channel music?? What are they thinking. Do yourselves a favor go get yourself a nice cd playe(Ah! Tjoeb 4000, Rega Planet, Arcam....ect) then get a nice integrated amp(Manley Stingray, Sim Audio I-5, Naim NAit 5i...ect) some good cables, hook it all up. The let it break in for a good 2 or 3 weeks, then you will get an idea of how good these speakers can sound. Personally I own the RF-3's with upgraded xover components, Ah! Tjoeb 4000/upsampled w/ NOS seimens 7308, Exposure XV integrated amp and Straight wire cables. The RF-3's dont sound to bright or harsh at all, they are actullay pretty smooth sounding with my setup. I am thinking of upgrading to the RF-7's soon!
  15. Well you can't expect good sound from your RF-7's with a reciever. You need to get yourself at least a nice integrated amplifier if not some seperates. Also make sure you are using some decent cables, maybe a Analysis Plus Oval 12 speaker cables and interconnects. Personally I would go with tubes and theres a bunch of nice amps you can get within your budget especuially on the used market. Ive listed a few below, I listed the best in each catagory first but they are all very good amplifiers and will be far better than your reciever, it wont even be close. Tube: Manley labs Stingray (25w triode, 50w pentode el84 tubes) Conrad johnson CAV50(smooth 50watt el34 tubes) Rogue Audio Tempest (powerful 80w kt88 amp) VTL IT-85(80 wpc el34 tubes) Jolida 302b(50wpc el34 tubes) Hybrid: Unison Research Unico(80wpc 12au7 tubes) Jolida 1501(100wpc 12ax7 tubes) SS: Sugden A21(25watts class A very warm and smooth sounding) Sim Audio I-5(70 watts tube-like, punchy sound) Exposure 2010s(75wpc classic British sound smooth, punchy) Audio Analogue Puccini SE(50wpc smooth, tube sound) Blue Circle CS(50wpc clear, waRm sound) Rega Mira(60wpc Britsh sound warm mids, clean treble) I would also make sure your cd player is not the problem. You should at least be using something in the $500 range. Cheap cd/dvd players will sound bright and harsh. If you buy used you should be able to get a nice integrated amp and a cd player for around $1500. I would reccomend a used Rega Planet, Ah! tJOEB, OR jOLIDA JD100. The RF-7's are very good and revealing and you need to drive them with decent compnents. I hate to see people with speakers that good using a reciver and DVD player and expecting good sound. With a $2500 speaker you want to spend at least $2500 on an integrated amp and source so that they will play up to thier potential. Check out Audiogon.com for good used equipment. And dont forget good cables too.
  16. The RB-5's will work great with the Jolida amp. you might also try the smaller reference series floorstanders. Rf-25's would be a nice start for not much money. You can also check out Omega, Triangle and Coincident speakers. They all make reasonably priced bookshelf speakers that work well with low powered tube amps.
  17. I hear Sugden is coming out with an SE version of the A21 with 50 watts of class A power for about $3000. It should be a real nice amp. I may wait until this is available and have a listen.
  18. If I was you I would send back that reciever and get yourself a nice integrated amp like the Jolida 102b or NAD 320bee for around$-$500. It will sound much better with the RB-5's than a reciever for not much more. The rb-5's are very nice speakers but they need a good amp to sound thier best.
  19. I will be upgrading my RF-3's to the RF-7 and I would like to upgrade my amp as well. Right now I am using an Exposure XV which works great with the RF-3's but I think its time for a new amp since this one is almost 115 yyears old. What integrated amps do you guys reccomend under $2500. I would really like to go with solid state, have heard tubes and they are not my cup of tea. i have been considering amps like the Naim Nait 5i, Exposure 3010, Sim Audio i-5, Plinius 8200, Classe CAP 151, Sugden a21a....ect. Which amps match up best with Klipsch RF-7's?? I am strongly leaning towards the new Exposure 3010 since I really like my Exposure XV with the RF-3's. It is a nice warm sounding amp with great rythm and timing and a very lively sound. I listen mainly to rock music so I want something with a bit of punch. Any other ideas? Which of the amps I listed will have the best synergy with Klipsch, or are there any better ones I didnt mention? I would prefer an integrated with a phono section but its not absolutely nesesary. thanks frank thanks
  20. Well i mean that I bought them origionally because I was on a tight budget, and they have served me well and sounded great for the money. But now I have the money to get the better speakers I wanted origionally but couldnt afford at the time. So while I have been happy with thr RF-3's Im sure I will be even more happy with the new speakers I buy whatever they may be. Right now I have so many to choose from its going to be hard to make a choice. A Few that are on my list are. Klipsch RF-7 or RF-5 Revel F30 Dynaudio Countour 3 Paradigm Studio 100V3 PSB Stratus Gold i NHT 2.9 Vin Schwiekert VR3 Ive also considered going with a smaller floorstander and adding a nice sub like the REL Strata As you can see I have quite a list to choose from so it wont be easy. They are all excellent speakers, this is going to be rough!
  21. Yeah I really like the sound of British gear, well at least there amps. Exposure is kinda quirky like naim, they want you to use thier speaker cable since they build there amps without a zobel on the output some speaker cables with high inductance dont work well with them. Also they only accept banana plugs which can be annoying if you happen to have spades. But in the end I find that its worth putting up with the quirkyness of Exposure and Naim since theier stuff just sounds so good. At least for the price i think British integrateds are the way to go if you need amplification under $2000.
  22. It just seem strange using a pair of NHT bookshelfs with an $8000 Cary amp. You would be better off splitting the costs more evenly say spending maybe $5000 on speakers and $5000 on amplification this way the speakers and amps are on similar levels. A $300 NHT speaker is not going to make the bestof the Cary 805, its like wasting a good amp youll never hear what its really capable of. Im a firm believer that your system should be balanced. Maybe 40% speakers 25% amplification 25% source 10% cables this is just a basic idea Im not saying its right but it makes sense to me and alot of other music lovers and audiophiles. Im not saying price is directly proportiojnal to quality but for the most part it is up to a point at least. I mean once you get above aroun $5000 for a pair of speakers you start to get less and less improvement for the money as you go higher. What do you guys think
  23. Wow you have a pair of 15in woofers in that room! I think I would be overwelmed by that much bass. But I only have 2 channel music only system so I dont need the bass liek home theater systems. Im sure the RF-7's will have more than enough bass for me, after all the RF-3's were pretty satisfying in the bass for me so the RF-7's should take it to the next level. I also like the real wood finish compared to the fake black wood on the RF-3's. Im hoping the RF-7's will have a bigger sound with more impact than my RF-3's, has this been your experience??

  25. There are a few to consider, I would look into something used like Creek 5350se $700-900 Exposure Super XV $300-500 Naim Nait 3 $500-700 New: Creek 4330se $700 Exposure 2010s $1000 Jolida 102b $550 If you like the "british" sound which usually means great rythm, timing, punchy, dynamic and a sweet midrange, you cant go wrong with Creek, Naim or Exposure. Exposure is not very well known in the States but they make some of the best integrateds I have ever heard for the price, they just have a rightness to the sound that is amazing, they just let the music through.
