  1. The balance between the woofer and mid/highs. The woofer consumes more power then the mid/highs therefore requires more power to balance the sound. As you stated you can accomplish this with a separate variable gain on the pre-amp or in my case I don't have a seperate variable gain so I run more power to the woofers.
  2. Your modified schematic looks correct. I bi-amped my Forte's and from my experience you will not have a good balance between your woofers and the mid/highs since you are using the same wattage amps. The woofers should have a more power then the mid/highs. I am running 270 watts of solid state power to my woofers and 35 watts of tube power to my mid/highs without any balance controls between the two amps with great results.
  3. Where are you located Gorm? If you are local to Chicago area I may be interested, I have the wood working tools to make a custom motorboard. The person I purchased my Dean G RF-7's/RC-7 from did a center RF-7 like you did for his dad's system. Unfortunately he did this after I purchased his RF-7/RC-7 system.
  4. I must be getting old. That is a photo of the receiver (Pioneer SX-1980) that I bought over 30 years ago (not my Dad's) and still use. My 2 channel setup sounds better then my A/V setup.
  5. Did you rule out the Sansui as being the source of the problem?
  6. The ability to play at concert volume levels without breaking up is the reason I purchased Klipsch speakers. My RF-7 system can do 110dB while giving you that "crap your pants" feeling. It's not that often I listen that loud but it is good to know you can take your Klipsch speakers for a drive on the autobahn without fear that the engine will explode.
  7. I am running my Pioneer receiver (270 wpc) to the low end and my Dynaco ST70 (35 wpc) for the mids and highs on my Forte's with modified crossovers (same values as the origingal). I also lucked out without needing any gain controls between the two amplifiers.
  8. If your Audyssey works the same as the MCACC on my Pioneer Elite then my guess is that the Audyssey detects the effeciency of the Klipsch speakers and has attenuated the output to the speakers. This will allow you to turn up the volume to max and not have the speakers clip or distort. Welcome to the forum NielsW, enjoy your new Klipsch HT system.
  9. Since I was present for some of the testing my obersations are that the Chorus speakers are leaking past the speaker gaskets. I did the push test on the woofer, the passive moved out then right back in. In a sealed cabinet the passive should stay out for a few seconds before moving back in. I also noticed that the speaker cabinets had alot of vibration (compared to my Forte's) when the volume was turned up. This may be due to the problem of having a 500WPC McIntosh amp powering the woofers or maybe there should be more internal bracing. This is my first time to listen the tractrix horn drivers. I thought that without treatment on the walls, the sound was large and disperssed but had an echo. I could localize the vocals but not to the point of having the speakers disappear. I feel that with the tractrix horn the sound midrange is covering a very wide angle that makes it difficult for the speakers to disappear. I would try your KLF30's (or my Forte's) in Mikes house to see if it's his room or the speakers.
  10. I have a pair of Forte' 1 for 2 channel and the RF7/RC7 for home theater. For 2 channel I prefer the Forte's mainly because of the midrange. The RF-7's have a better high end and faster base but the Forte's have a very good deep low end. For home theater the RF7/RC7 is my favorite due to the clarity and the ability to play at concert volume levels and not sound strained. For a real treat, hook up your RF7's and Forte's to a tube amp and you might decide to get rid of your solid state amps.
  11. Maybe try a fresh coat of paint with a bold color to complement the velvet drapes.[^o)] Thats what I think the problem is since the Chorus II crossovers have the tweeter wired out of phase.
  12. Looks like there is more copper in that crossover compared to the transformer powering my house[]
  13. http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/storage/4/1520377/DSC_9914.JPG Here I thought that the crossover in the above picture was a wall mural. I suppose that your going to tell me that the saxophone player is real and not a wall mural. Outstanding system!
  14. Scott, As we discussed over the phone the Chorus II schematic shows the tweeter wired out of phase. Make sure Mike has identified the + correctly for each driver. When Mike gets a chance to check you the wiring, give me a call, if I'm available I can shoot up to give a hand. Ray
  15. Scott, I did the mod myself. I had a copy of the Chorus II crossover schematic to do the mod. The only thing I didn't check was the replacement caps that the previous owner had replaced, he did a sloppy job and had used hot melt glue on the leads to ack as wire insulation. I was going to remove it and use "electrical spaghetti" but couldn't easily remove the hot melt glue. I could have used my heat gun but since Mike came over after work he wanted to take his modded crossovers home with him that evening so I left the caps as is. Since all I had were the crossovers, I suggest checking that the wiring from the crossovers to the drivers are in phase, don't go by the stripe on the wire since they may be out of phase at the connection to the drivers. Verify that both speakers are identical. You might want to try the test tone CD to see if there are certain frequencies that are a problem.
  16. Thanks for BigCliff, it was United Audio. They had a set of Klipschorns in the store when I went to visit Paul, unfortunately they didn't have them in corners and on top of that they were using a subwoofer with them. Fortunately Paul's entourage kept him away from the incorrectly placed Klipschorns. Simply Stereo was the first time I heard Klipschorn's installed properly. I also was impressed with Holm Audio's unique array of audio equipment. They had one room with a massive collection of vinyl. Does anyone remember Playback? I purchased my Pioneer SX-1980 from them back in the day.
  17. Years ago I was at a Hi-Fi store across the streat from Oak Brook mall (I don't remember the name) anyhow I got this from the man himself: Edit: The store might have been Stereo Studio.
  18. My speakers are the orginal Forte 1's that have been re-capped and modified for bi-amping. The modified crossover components are the same values as the original crossover design. Here is the link with pictures: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=94027
  19. I have a 50" plasma above my fireplace with RF-7 floor standing speakers and a RC-7 center channel. No problems at all with the sound quality. My plasma TV stand is slightly tilted down a few degrees since I sit about 8 feet back.
  20. Simply Stereo in Hoffman Estates. Small older store but they have an impressive selection of Heritage and the new RF-7II's. They do not have a web site but they are listed in the yellow pages. Since when did Barretts stop selling Klipsch?
  21. My Forte's have Crites midrange and tweeter diaphragms as well as new caps on the crossover. The biggest improvement was the tweeter diaphragms and new caps. The Crites midrange diaphragms on my original Forte's were an improvement, the vocals are a little bit more subdued which I appreciate when I play the Forte's loud since the vocals don't sound like shouting. When I recapped my x-overs I also set them up for bi-amping running my SS amp to the woofers and tube amp to the mids & tweeters. I really like the sound of the RF-7's and Forte's with tube amps.
  22. Since I have Forte's for my 2 channel system and RF-7's (not the RF-7II's) for my home theater system I will give you my 2 cents. I have listened to the new RF-7II's and liked the sound but they were a little bright on the high end (might have been the SS amps). For 2 channel I prefer the Forte's but my RF-7's are a close second. For home theater the RF7's are my favorite. Depending on the condition and location, used Forte's will go for $400-600 tops. For that price you might consider keeping your Forte's for a second 2 channel system and pull the plug on the RF-7II's for your home theater. Regarding the 8" max distance from the rear wall, the RF-7II's cabinets are much deeper then the Forte's which will make them protrude further into the room. Is you better half ok with this?
