  1. Greetings, I have 2 questions regarding the Faroudja and Reon chipsets. First question is: Which one is better for dvd upscaling? Now on the 2nd question, I'll give alittle background. I'm interested in upgrading my receiver soon. I can't deceide between 2 models of Onkyos, the 805 or the 875. I'm using an Oppo dvd player with Faroudja. ( the older Oppo model 971) The Onkyo 805 also has Faroudja, but the 875 has the Reon. Would it be better to have the Reon equip receiver or the Faroudja one with my Oppo? The Oppo can only go to 1080i, and so I would figure on the receiver then making it 1080p. I don't have an hdtv yet, but soon I'll be getting a Samsung 81 series. Should I keep Faroudja with Faroudja, or would the more recent Reon chipset improve the picture even more? Thank you
  2. Greetings, I am also a fan of dvd-a, eventhough I do not have alot of titles yet. Mine are: Queen - The Game Queen - Night at the Opera also my wife and I are both fans of Bollywood movies, and they are releasing some of their movie soundtracks now on dvd-a. We have: Dhoom 2 Ta Ra Rum Pum Veer Zaara Veer Zaara should arrive soon in the mail, but thats about it. I also have the Bjork Surrounded box. It isn't in dvd-a but the DTS 96/24 is really nice on it. I really enjoy dvd-a for the quality, and the feeling that you are indeed in the room with the performers. Well worth it.
  3. Thanks Steve. That really clears things up. Thanks alot [H]
  4. Greetings, I recently read about the new Onkyo receivers that can decode the newer formats. (dd plus, dts hd) I'm currently running a 6.1 system in a 12' W by 18' L with cathedral ceiling. I'd like to get the new Onkyo receiver later, and so need to figure out my back surrounds. Right now I have RC-35 center, Quintet II fronts ( gonna upgrade to RF-63 later on) RT-10d sub, RS-35 surounds, and Quintet II center for Back Center. My Onkyo receiver is 85 watts per channel (TX-SR601), and the newer one I think is going to be 130 watts per channel. (TX-SR875) For the back surrounds, should I go with bookshelfs (RB-51or 61) or should I do more surrounds back there? (RS-51 or 61) I do movies and music 50/50 and also an ocassional dvd-a. Thanks
  5. I don't think it will be released here in the States. This Underworld director's cut dvd is the one that Japan has. I'm able to play it (being that it is region 2) with my all region dvd player. I find that movies released in other countries sometimes will have better audio options than the American region 1 releases.
  6. my region 2 of Underworld has 4 audio tracks: English 5.1 ex English dts es - full bitrate Japanese 5.1 Commentary Here is a link for you: http://us.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/code-j/section-videos/pid-1003925101/ It is a bit pricey, for being a Japanese dvd, but it is worth it. This is the director's cut as well
  7. House of Flying Daggers - R3 dts es Intial D - R0 dts es Hero directors cut - R3 dts es Infernal Affairs 1 - R0 dts es Underworld - R2 dts es (japanese version rare) I use dts es tracks almost exclusivly. When ever I tweak and need to demo, normally I use one of these titles, but if I want a good dolby track, I'll pull an Indian film such as Veer Zaara or Asoka. The songs have such incredible sound in dolby 5.1
  8. I'll add one more while I'm on a roll. [6]<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> The Final Sacrifice... Made in Canada. Its about a 16 year old kid who looks and sounds like Pee-Wee Herman. The kid researches about a cult and ancient civilization called Ziox, that his father was killed for. The kid ends up running away from the cult, joins up with a man named Zap Rousdower, and then finds this Ziox nation with the help of a Yosemite Sam character named Mike Pipper.
  9. Manos: The Hands of Fate..... Made in El Paso in 1966 for 19 grand. A family vacation goes bad when they make a wrong turn, and end up at a lodge run by a man named Torgo. He is supposed to be a Satyr, but just has big knees. He repeats lines all the time, and Torgo's music is the best part of the movie. Family decides to stay at the lodge, until the Master finds out, and he and his ghoul wives wake up from the dead to get the family. BTW Manos is Spanish for Hands. The Incredibly Strange Creatures That Stopped Living And Became Mixed-up Zombies.... Can't remember when it was made, but it is about 2 guys and a girl that go to the local carnival, visit a hoodoo fortune teller, who has zombies in a cage. One guy stays at the carnival to watch a girl show, but ends up a zombie. Some of the films on the Imdb list I've seen, but as Mystery Science Theater 3000 versions. Oh yeah I forgot one!! Hard Rock Zombies... A rock group stays at a place, bass player learns the devil's tri-tone (or whatever). When played it will bring the dead back to life. Anyway the group plays at this place, only to be killed by Hitler and the other people living at the place, and the band get revenge as zombies.
  10. For me, thats a toss up between:<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Manos: The Hands of Fate & The Incredibly Stange Creatures That Stopped Living And Became Mixed-Up Zombies Normally I watch Asian films, and its rare for find a bad one there, but I was very disappointed with Oldboy. A lot of people and critics like that one, but my girlfriend and I must be a very few that didnt. Also it gets to me that hollywood copies/plagiaries Asian films, and passes them off as their own. That new one called Pulse is a copy of a Japanese film Kairo, and Leonardo's new film, The Departed, is a plagiarized version of Hong Kong's Infernal Affairs 1. Sorry, I dont mean to take over this topic, it is just my major rant on hollywood.
  11. Hey everyone, Has anyone heard of the hvd format? I've read that a hvd disc can store 1 terrabite. I've found a player for it: http://www.hkflix.com/hardware/xq/asp/pid.112/qx/details.htm This player can upconvert to 1080p from both hdmi and component. I was wondering if anyone here has heard of these, and knows more about them. (both the format and this player) Thanks
  12. The room is a cathedral ceiling. I have my setup with my rights (front right, and surround right) on the wall where the ceiling starts to incline. The lefts (front and surround lefts) are on the dividing wall that is underneath the peak of the ceiling. This dividing wall separates the kitchen from the living room. Just so you all know, my system includes:<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Quintet II's for fronts (L/R), surrounds (L/R) Quintet II center for back center. RC-35 front center, and sony sawm500 for sub. Basically I'm looking at going all reference line. I feel I should stick to the 35 series, and so I hope my dealer (where I purchased RC-35) still has the 35's in. For the back center, I'm not sure whether to go with RS-35 or a RC-10. I have a self on the wall, and I'm afraid anything bigger would rip the shelf down. Don't really want to remove the shelf to put in a new one for this is a rental house, and they don't want all the holes made, and filled all over. For the sub, I'm going for a RT-12d when it is available, but for now, this is what I'm deciding on. My receiver is an Onkyo TX-SR601 - 85 watts per channel.
  13. Hey Everyone, I'm looking to upgrade my 6.1 system, and I wanted to hear from the board on this. For the back center, would there be any advantage for using a surround speaker instead of using a center. As in using a RS-35 or 7 in place of RC-10 or so on. What the speaker may be, I'm looking at getting a Reference model. Thank you
  14. Greetings everyone, I don't post here alot, but I always reading the posts here. With HDTV, if the tv upconverts everything to 720p or 1080i, is it better to use an upconverting dvd player, sending the video in the tv's natural res, or would it be just as good to send the dvd video 480i/p to the tv. Thank you
  15. I thought about getting a Synergy Center for my setup, but I wanted to hear the Reference Centers for myself. I went to The Stereo Shoppe, and I was able to demo some stuff I brought with me. Those included: 2 cd's Winty Wan - Chinese violin music Twelfth of Never - Gothic Ethereal rock Both cds are in HDCD. I also brought 2 dvds. Infernal Affairs - Chinese triad movie ( this one has a great scene where the main charactors are in a stereo shop ) Star wars Episode II. The guy at the shop was very helpful, and I was able to listen to these on the RC-10, 25, and 35. After about an hour of listening and talking, I bought the RC-35. I got home and hooked it up............. It sounded like what other people have posted here. Muffled, in a box. I connected it to the top input, and it was all high sounds and still sounded bad. I called the place and took the center back. When I got there, the very same person, Mike, said that if he would have thought about it more, he could have helped me over the phone. Included in the box is a pair of metal brackets and he connected them to the back inputs vertically. He explained that the bottom input is for the woofers and the top is the tweeter. With those bars on them, they are both in use when you connect to the center. Its kind of a thing were you want to hit your head and go "DUH!!!!" We all had a good laugh on it. When I got home the second time, I hooked it up and the RC-35 sounds very beautiful. Everything is defined and detailed. I love it. But please, if your RC-35 is sounding muffled, puts those metal brackets on the back vertical. This speaker is very very worth it. I'm very happy about this speaker, and the service I received at The Stereo Shoppe in Lansing MI.
