  1. Outlaw 750 5-channel, 165 watts each. Pre amp is my soundblaster 2 zs card, plan on upgrading to a new x-fi card soon.
  2. I agree with homemade. It has no actual benefit, but I think he fails to realize that the placebo effect can be tremendous. Well worth the time and money. Remember, test subjects taking a placebo don't really feel better, they only think they do.
  3. Thanks for the schematics. Both of those are modifications on an E crossover, I have the E2. Can anybody find an E2 schematic? I have searched here. Perhaps I will write them up myself by studying the crossover.
  4. Thanks Rick, not having to replace the 33uF lowers the cost to about half. Now, you mentions the "DeanG's squaker level mod". I have searched all over the forums for it, found some things about people saying they like it, but I still don't understand. 1. Is it a new crossover? A rebuild? 2. Something you can do yourself? 3. What does it do, in that how does it make it sound better. 4. I have E2 crossovers in my Heresys. Is that a problem? 5 How much? I'm sure the answers are in the forums already, maybe if someone could point me in the right directions so I can find the info. ---------------- Your Heresys have some black poly 2uFcaps not the older motor runs like your Khorns. They would benefit from higher quality caps though. As far as the 33uF, it is more a blocking than a band pass cap. Don't waste your money on a premium poly film, rather use a good non-polarized electrolytic in that position such as the Ruby available from parts express. Read up on DeanG's squaker level mod. You will be surprized how good a Heresy can really sound. I personally build new reinforced backs with L-pads for the squaker and tweeter for my Heresys. Rick ----------------
  5. Hope you're not asking me...I don't know what your talking about! ---------------- On 8/25/2005 12:20:43 AM Cornwalled wrote: I enjoyed finding the AL-3 crossover too. Might have to build one of those for my LaScala, that way I can use the K-55-M. That is the driver it's designed for, right? And not the K-55-X? -Jon ----------------
  6. I think you people are right, my ears need to get used to the Khorns. I am starting to hear it now. Playing good jazz, it's like I have a band in my living room. I will see what changing the caps does also, just for the heck of it. The caps are old, after all. I don't think I'll change the caps in the Heresys, they still sound good and they are 10 years younger (84 vs 74). Also, I did the math and it would cost $200 per Heresy (compared to $100 per Khorn) to put Dynamicaps in. My Heresys have the E2 crossover. It takes a 33uF cap. The largest Dynamicap makes is 10uF. So three of those, at $40 each, plus a 3uF, in addition to two 2uF, yikes, that's $200! I think only my Khorns get the royal treatment. Hey, thanks again everyone for your info, this forum is a great resource and lots of fun.
  7. I really like MP3 gain, I think it's a great (and totally free!) program for MP3 files. http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/index.php It can make all the songs the same average loudness by using an algorithm to detect the average loudness of a song to the human ear. You can also set it to "no clipping" so it will never raise it past the point that it will clip. Please note: It does not flatten out the volume of a song! All the dynamic range is there, just adjusted so the average loudness of the songs are the same. You can also set it to "album" mode and it will keep the relative loudness of the songs the same, but adjust the whole album to have a certain average loudness. I think the song mode is way better. And it's lossless! It does not lose any information, though it can only change the loudness in increments of 1.5dB. It is all very mathmatical why that is, you can read it on the website if you are a math geek. I have mine set to convert MP3 files to an average of 90dB (default is 89dB)with no clipping, song mode. I think that is the best. Some songs are a little below 90dB average because of the no clipping setting, but they all sound about right and I don't have to keep reaching for the volume knob. And no clipping.
  8. Well, I ordered new Dynamicaps for one speaker, going to put it in and listen to the difference. Two 2uF, one 3uF, one 10uF. That was about $100. I'll let you guys know when I get them in and did a listen test. I'm going to add this next comment, though I know I will be beaten to a pulp for suggesting it. When you notice the difference between MP3 and CD, are you doing a blind comparison? When she knew what was playing, my wife said the CD was clearly better. With a true blind comparison, the difference was not clear at all. I suggest you have someone do a true test on you, and be sure they adjust the volume before switching formats so they are about equal loudness. Also, be sure they don't just switch back and forth, but sometimes play the same format twice. No peeking! Eyes shut! I think you'll be suprised.
  9. Thanks 3dzapper! Just what I needed. Printed it out and saved it on my computer.
  10. Anyone got the schematics for the AA crossover? I want to change out the caps, but I can't read what's left of the writing on the components. I don't have oil caps, these are dark red plastic about 1 inch by 1/2 inch. There are two of them. I think they say 2 mfd, but I can't see a voltage on them. It also has a large white thing, a cylinder about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide. What the heck is that? Not sure if it's a cap or a large resister. Other than that, it has the standard 2-diode plate and the three transformers. Thanks all,
  11. It looks fairly simple to replace the caps myself. Is there any easy answer to which caps are best? Are DynamiCaps best? It might be worth a try to swap them out and see if it sounds better, after all 30 years is a long time for a capacitor.
  12. Thanks so much for your comments. Well, I had done some basic troubleshooting before I wrote. All the drivers are "working" in that when I covered the mid and covered the tweeter the sound changed noticable. I could feel the woofer moving when I opened up the side panel. Whether they are working right is another question. (Yes, securely closed the side panel again) They are all hooked to the same amp (Outlaw 750 5 channel amp, 165 watts) with 14 gauge monster cable. Everything is the same, which is why every variable except the speakers are eliminated. I tightened the screws of the crossover as recommended here, they were already tight though. I took a close look at the crossover, their are no outward signs of anything wrong with the caps or the coils, it looks like they had a good life. I had my wife listen, she says I'm high and that the khorns are fuller all the way around. Upon further listening, I agree. I also did a blind study with my wife (who has better hearing) on 128 MP3 and the original CD, to compare quality. No definite advantage was evident, even with my good amp and speakers. I am glad, I know some people have reripped their cd collection at 160 MP3 when the price of large capacity hard disks came down. I have a lot of music, I really don't want to rip it all again!
  13. Just bought 2 khorns (1974) and noticed that my Heresy's (1983) seem to sound crisper and more detailed overall, except for the real low bass, there the khorns win. I thought the khorns should sound at least as good or better all around. Any thoughts? 2 Khorns (1974), 2 Heresys (1983), Outlaw 750 power amp, Audiology 2 ZS card.
  14. Here is some info on radio waves... Radio waves naturally travel in straight lines, so you would naturally expect (because of the curvature of the earth) that no radio station would transmit farther than 30 or 40 miles. And that is exactly the case for ground-based (as opposed to satellite) TV transmissions. The curvature of the earth prevents ground-based TV transmissions from going much further than 40 miles (64 km). Certain radio stations, however, especially in the short-wave and AM bands, can travel much farther. Short-wave can circle the globe, and AM stations transmit hundreds of miles at night. This extended transmission is possible is because of the ionosphere -- one of the layers of the atmosphere. It is called the ionosphere because when the sun's rays hit this layer, many of the atoms there lose electrons and turn into ions. As it turns out, the ionosphere reflects certain frequencies of radio waves. So the waves bounce between the ground and the ionosphere and make their way around the planet. The composition of the ionosphere at night is different than during the day because of the presence or absence of the sun. You can pick up some radio stations better at night because the reflection characteristics of the ionoshphere are better at night.
  15. I guess if you wanted to be creative you could make your Khorns look like a large shorthorn. You could fit a frame for the whole Khorn front and put a large cloth grill over it all. Then you would have the best of both worlds. That would be a job for an expert carpenter.
  16. Thanks D-MAN, intersting info. I agree, they are the coolest looking Klipsch. An elegant retro 50's look that is somehow timeless. reznil 2 klipshorns (1974), 2 Heresys (1983) Outlaw 750 amp, soundblaster 2 ZS card.
  17. Interesting speakers, I was looking a pictures of them opened up in the forums. I don't understand the theory of their operation. The woofer fires forward. In back of the woofer is an empty cabinet with a vertical slit opening down the lenght. After this, it has the corner horn setup like a K-horn, using the walls as and extension of the horn. But what is it "horning"? The backward movements of the woofer? It seems like an unworkable mix of bass horn and bass reflex. How well do they sound? I'm sure the bass could not be nearly as good and accurate and a K-horn. reznil 2 klipshorns (1974), 2 Heresys (1983) Outlaw 750 amp, soundblaster 2 ZS card.
  18. Well, I can't figure out how to post pictures. They look like a standard oiled walnut Khorn, compared to photos I've seen. They have "AA" crossovers, whatever that means, and I peeked at the woofer, it has a square magnet.
  19. They sound awesome, even with the cheapo amp I'm using now. I'm using an "Insignia" (Best Buy brand) 110 watt X 6 channel amp. THD 1%. Can't wait for my Outlaw 750 amp to come in the mail, got it on Ebay for $700. The model is KB-WO. I am still trying to get the pictures to attach...
  20. I just bought a used pair of klipschorns, serial number on one is 6M677 which I think means it was built in 1974. However, it has something stamped over the sticker in red ink. It looks like it says "SALESMANS ACCOMMODATION SAMPLE" but not sure about about the accommodation word. It then says "NOT FOR RESALE". What does that mean? Thanks
