  1. Well, let me say this about that. If the planets align, I will have a brand spankin’ shiny new pair of Heresy III’s in walnut tomorrow. I figure the new Heresy’s will eliminate any want or need to “upgrade” the box stock Heresy I’s that the previous/original owner enjoyed, as is, for 40 years! Don’t get me wrong, I do appreciate the suggestions and feedback, I do. But, why can’t I just leave them alone and enjoy the way they sound now? If I didn’t like the way they sound currently, I doubt anything I throw at them would change that much. I do like the way they sound and will be leaving them alone, at least for now.
  2. I have been told that sometimes gravity can have an ill effect over time on keeping voice coils aligned in the magnet structure. I guess it’s especially true if older speakers have not been used for some time. That is not been the case with these speakers but I thought it couldn’t hurt. Unfortunately, the cables were not long enough to do a full 180. I really didn’t want to put in longer cables at this time. This would have required dragging out the old soldering iron. Maybe one day I will re-cable them?
  3. Opened them up for the first time ever according to the seller. Yep, stock 70's Heresy's with Alnico (round) magnets on the tweeters. Checked them with my meter, 6.7 and 6.8 ohms DCR respectively. That was in circuit but that should be about right. I did rotate both woofers as much as the length of cables would allow. Just don't think I'm going to drink the upgrade/crossover Kool-Aid anytime soon. They are just NOT broke! My new Hersey III's are supposed to be delivered Monday. It will be very interesting doing an A/B between the two. Now I may have to find some II's to complete the trilogy? Actually my very first pair of Klipsch speakers were Heresy II's. One woofer was bad and some of the crossover components had come unglued from the terminal cup. Not a stellar start to my Klipsch journey but I got over it. That must have been around thirty years ago , wow! Here's a couple shots of the innards..........
  4. I am with you. I have a late 80's Integra dual cassette deck and 6 Disc CD changer. The deck works perfectly, the changer has issues with the drawer but once in place, it sounds great! Have working remotes and the boxes for both as well. I have always been an Onkyo/Integra fan.
  5. I was looking for a simple, no frills integrated amplifier for a den system. I don't need a lot of power, wanted a sub out and, of course, remote control. I read some good reviews of the Onkyo A-9010 which has digital inputs, phono stage and a line out but it was being phased out. Then I stumbled upon an ad for its replacement, the new Onkyo A-9110. Advertised as strictly analog, which I prefer, with dedicated sub out and phono with remote. I decided to order one with a 30 day money back guarantee.I have been using if for about a week now hooked up to Boston Acoustics VRM60 speakers and matching PV1000 sub. I have to say, I am very impressed with the overall quality of the sound. The phono stage isn't the greatest but respectable. It produces lots of detail and good punch, especially when using Onkyo's Phase Matching Bass function which is basically a modern Loudness function. It also has a Direct feature for the purists out there. The Direct function not only bypasses the tone controls but the sub out as well. That is the default setting that can be changed by using the Setup feature. You can also change the speaker impedance setting from 8 ohm, default, to 4 ohm. It's advertised at 50 watts per channel, fine print is 4 ohms, 30 watts at 8 ohms. I think that is a bit misleading but, if you do your research...........It is a class A/B amp which Onkyo refers to as WRAT (Wide Range Amplification Technology). I do prefer A/B amps to the D'd that I have listened to. I will say my experience with D amps is limited. If you're looking for a no frills, very good sounding integrated that won't break the bank, I would recommend giving the A-9110 a try. Adendum: This is a post I made on another Forum. I am just really impressed with this little amp. I re-posted it here as I decided to try it with my newly acquired Heresy I's. Once again, this amp has performed way above my expectations. It drives the Heresy's better with more detail and subtley than my restored Marantz 2238b which is no slouch. The Phase Matching Bass function ads some nice low end without sacrificing the mids as some loudness circuits do. I haven't had this amp very long so the jury's still out but, for under 300 clams, it's going to be hard to beat IMHO.
  6. I felt very bad for the seller. I know he really didn't want to sell them but, I got the feeling he needed the money more than the speakers. I'm sure a lot of us can relate. They do look like they are floating on those stands and without mirrors. I'm going to open the backs tomorrow. I think in 78 they were still using the Alnico magnet K-77's? I guess I will find out. More pics..................
  7. There I was, minding my own business, when somehow I was looking at Craigslist? There they were, a pair of box stock BR Heresy's from 1978! His asking price was WAYYY too high but I thought I would call and try to get him to step away from the crack pipe. After a brief conversation, we came to a reasonable price provided I could inspect and listen to them. Turns out he is the original owner. He bought them at Pacific Stereo in San Jose CA, circa 1979. Still has the raw birch finish, no funky a** stain on these. Grills are nice and they have those way cool "Laser badges." The labels are both in great condition, clearly "S" code HBR's with consecutive serial numbers. Oh, they came with the coolest clear acrylic stands. Nothing screams 70's like acrylic! Bonus, they work and sound great! I don't have the heart to do anything to them, they are just too vintage cool, warts and all! It is true, a little Heresy is good for the soul!
  8. I just ordered an Onkyo A-9110 integrated amp for a second system. It is only rated at 30 watts per channel A/B into 8 ohms, 50 into 4. It’s all analog, no digital inputs which I personally prefer. I have a very good DAC. Four line level inputs, MM phono stage, tape out, and fixed subwoofer out. It also boasts a modern loudness circuit and tone defeat for the purists. For a tick under 300 clams and 30 day satisfaction guarantee I figured, why not try it? My Heresy III’s are on order, hoping they will be here today. I will certainly try the Onkyo with them and report back.
  9. When you are a new poster selling your wares on a Forum that is specific to one brand or company, in general, you will have may "experts" scrutinizing or suspicious of your posts. Some tend to jump the gun a bit in making accusations or at least innuendo's that a new poster is trying some kind of chicanery. I am glad that it at least appears this is not the case here. Very nice looking original Cornwall's, good luck with the sale!
  10. Thanks opusk2k9, I can see it now. PM sent with a proposition.
  11. OK, I must be missing something? In your original post, all I see are the pictures, no description, price or anything? What gives???
  12. Thanks Craig, I will give those Chinese tubes a try in the near future.
  13. My mistake, sorry for the confusion.
  14. Thanks Craig, I will definitely keep that in mind. Which KT-88 do you recommend? I only have a quad of new Mullards. Advice well taken Schu.
  15. RF-7's have dual rear ports. If I'm looking at the pictures correctly, sans the drivers, there is only one port.
  16. Well, I ran the amp for about two hours this morning with the 6L6GC's. I checked the bias afterwards and they were all at 45 VDC including the one that was in the position of the 7581A in question. I will fire them up later and check again. A friend of mine has a couple of calibrated tube testers. I will see if he has time to check it provided they will test that particular tube.
  17. I bought a quad of Tung-Sol 7581A for my VRD’s after reading the glowing reviews of this tube. Went through Craig’s recommended bias routine and set them kind of cool at 45 VDC. I double checked the bias periodically for the first couple days with no issues. We we had a very unusual two day power outage due to a rare 12” of that wet and heavy white crap, aka snow, that virtually brought this city to its knees. We are on our fifth day without TV, land line or internet. Anyway, fortunately I switched off all the power strips to my main system when not in use which was before the outage. After the power came on, I decided to fire up my system. Everything was going and sounding fine. No audible issues with my system. Just for S & G’s, I decided to check the bias. Three of the power tubes tested at 45 VDC, the fourth one, 97! I initially tried to dial it down but could only get it to 57. I shut everything off and let it sit for awhile. I tried the tube in question in the other amp, meter in place. As soon as I turned on the amp, she started to climb rapidly. I don’t think the power outage had anything to do with it. I will be monitoring my other tubes very closely. I’m now running T-S 6L6GC’s without issue, so far. I hope this isn’t an indication of quality. Can’t seem to find any negative comments on this tube. I just thought I would share. Any comments and suggestions are most welcome, thanks.
  18. I tried all that I could think of to track it down but was unsuccessful.
  19. I have a Yamaha C-80 preamp that is dead quiet at idle with the VRD’s. There was just something between the two, ok three, that wasn’t working together. I was actually in the market for a tube pre-amp. This came up for a great price so I gave it a try. It didn’t work out so no harm done. I will keep looking. Thanks guys.......
  20. Currently JBL 4312a Control Monitors. Waiting for my new Heresy III's to arrive.
  21. Unfortunately, there is an issue. There was a slight hum/buzzing coming from both speakers. It really manifested itself when Imswapped the 6L6GC power tubes with KT-88’s. Everything I tried did not cure the problem. I ended up taking back to the seller/tech and we decided the combination may not be compatible. He graciously refunded the money. The search continues..........
  22. No, sorry, I don't have the box. When my daughter recently moved, my wife thought it was OK for her to use it. Which was OK if I had known about it because I would have insisted on getting it back. Well, that didn't happen.....................
