  1. Keeping Klipschorns in listening room but decided to do something different in the living room. I have some interested parties but it will require shipping the speakers. Is the vault holder here in case I need to ship?
  2. I installed a simple Radio Shack FM antenna (maybe $20) on my roof and get terrific sonics. I live just outside of New York City and enjoy WQXR and WBGO. The sound quality is wonderful. FM radio fans are now excited about HD Radio. Some of the HD (Hyper-Digital) quality is excellent and it is all free. You might want to look into the Sony XDR-H1HD tuner. It sells for $99. http://www.hdradio.com/
  3. What a thread! I was not following the board much lately but saw this thread. For the past 2 days I have been using an Adcom GFA 555 II amplifier on my Klipschorns and it sounds fabulous so far but the reason for it is my newly arrived preamp - Art Audio Alana. I had used McIntosh tubes for years on my Klipschorns but will probably much a switch to either solid state or digital amps. There is so much bass there which I thought never existed. Yes, watch out for the volume. I believe the single most important component is the preamp in one's system.
  4. All of my equipment is up-to-date (the MC-240 was overhauled a couple of years ago) and I have a specially constructed listening room with four dedicated circuits. The only thing I plan to investigate are crossover options for the KHorns. I have read of at least 3 gentlemen here who offer crossover modifications. I guess my next task will try to determine which crossover would be a good match for my particular situation (room, listening position, amplification type, musical preferences, listeing volume, etc.,etc.). I will also slip in my ICE amplifier when I have some time as well to see how the latest technology stands up to the classic McIntosh.
  5. Sort of related ... I was thinking of cutting the baseboard molding in my corners to get my KHorns right against the wall. Am I out of my mind? Will eliminating the half inch gap give noticeable sonic benefits? It's my own dedicated room so I can do whatever I like.
  6. Can't really invest much more in music .... already have over 5000 lps and I still enjoy listening to FM. I live just outside of New York City and rather spoiled with several excellent radio stations. I tend to spend my money on live performances as much as I can.
  7. I am using a Supratek Chenin preamplifier with the McIntosh MC-240. In the past, I had used the McIntosh MX-110 preamplier/tuner but that is no where near the Supratek in performance. Sources are currently a Denon DP-62L turntable with a Denon DL-103R cartridge, an Akai reel-to-reel, and a Sansui tuner. I generally don't play CD's except in the car sometimes.
  8. Oh ... the McIntosh MC-240 has been updated a couple of years ago and NOS tubes have been added. Still have the original RCA's somewhere here also. Just to note, I am not making any complaints regarding the MC-240. I would like to know how others feel about amplifiers for the KHorns.
  9. How do I get rid of that dopey cowboy next to my posts?
  10. I think I have a 'correct' room although a small room. A few weeks ago I started a thread 'KHorns in a Tiny Room' and came to the realization my room was fine after placing the KHorns in the corners on the long wall. The room is 16x10. I am sitting against the opposite wall with the horns pointing at my ears. So far I have not made any plans to modify/replace the crossover. Is replacing the caps simply a matter of going to Radio Shack and purchasing equivalent value caps in its place? Is this a worthwhile effort? The KHorns date back to 1982. I started peaking at ALK crossover options but they are rather pricey. If the upgrade was a night and day difference I would consider doing the Extreme-slope option. Otherwise I will tip-toe for now. The only thing I don't like regarding the McIntosh MC-240 amp is the lack of an ON/OFF switch. I am plugging/unplugging into the hospital grade outlet (dedicated amp circuit) each time I listen. I honestly don't like power conditioners and try to avoid them if I can.
  11. Hi folks, I am a newbie with Klipschorns (1982 stock) and currently run an old McIntosh MC-240 tube amplifier. So far its the only amplifier I have tried with the KHorns. The question I ask is whether there is one ultimate amplifier for these speakers? I would like to hear from all sides on this .. not just the vintage tube crowd. Thanks in advance.
  12. Thanks for all the replies so far. I have re-arranged the room so the KHorns are along the long wall. It has been a week so far and it is definitely better. Not the ultimate speaker but certainly extraordinary in many ways. I feel blessed. This is my 3rd pair of Klipsch with the first being Forte II (best speakers anywhere under $500 IMO) and a pair of Cornwalls in my living room mated with a Fisher 300-B tube receiver. [A bit of a confesssion, the KHorns were bought as a temporary replacement in main listening room while my Apogee Scintillas were being restored. I am using a McIntosh MC-240 tube amplifier along with a Supratek preamp. Front-end is all analog.] For some reason, I spent the last week listening to pre-recorded reel-to-reel tapes mainly as the souce in the system. Needless to say, the sound was very big. Some of the tape highlights included an RCA Living Stereo of Chopins Piano Concerto, Beatles Abbey Road, Emerson, Lake and Palmer's 1st Lp and a few Barlay-Crocker Classical tapes as well. Boy, I wished they never dropped that format. Has anyone experimented with raising their listening chair? I was thinking of somehow getting my ears in line with the horns.
  13. I was not expecting this but KHorns came into my life recently. My dedicated listening room is rather small - 16 ft x10 ft. I have always placed my speakers on the short wall with spacing roughly 5 feet apart. I sit about 8 feet away. I know its not ideal but it's all I have to work with. Presently, the KHorns are in the corners of the short wall. I was thinking of re-arranging and placing the KHorns on the 16 ft wall corners and placing my listening chair against the opposite wall. This places my ears 7-8 feet away. Does this sound like it might work? I can do whatever I want with room tweats. Thanks in advance.
  14. I recently acquired a pair of Klipschorns and will use my McIntosh MC240 as the amplifier. I plan to have the MC240 on the floor between the KHorns. The rest of the equipment which is vinyl based sits in the rear of the room and requires a 25 foot interconnect. The natural solution would be balanced interconnects but this is not an option with the older MC240. Options: 1) Run balanced cables with RCA adapter plugs attached to the ends of the cables 2) Look for a 25 foot RCA interconnect that could handle the run. I was considering the Blue Jeans Cable LC-1 Low Capacitance Audio Cable. http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/audio/index.htm Can someone suggest a reasonably priced cable or a DIY solution? Also, since the MC240 does not have an ON/OFF switch I have been plugging and unplugging into the wall socket (dedicated circuit) everytime I listen. This is part of the desire to have the amp sit between the speakers - easy to get to the electrical outlet. Anyone have a better idea? Has anyone out there heard the MC240/Klipschorn combination? So far the sound is promising but are there other amplifiers which can bring out more of the KHorn? Thanks in advance. Cornwalls Upstairs, Klipschorns Downstairs
  15. Hi Folks, Nice to find this board. Well, this past weekend a pair of Forte II's came into my life. I will be honest ... I know nothing about these speakers. I tried them in two different rooms in my home ... first a cheapie living room system with a Sansui integrated - sounded okay. Then I inserted them in my dedicated music room with a rather expensive setup (VPI, Apogees, etc) - and the Forte II's sounded surprisingly good. Now the questions .... Are Forte II's considered to be a good speaker? What can you guys tell me? Have I stumble upon something special here? What are the most desireable Klipsch speakers? Also, if I decide to keep these speakers .. what mods should be done? driver replacement? crossover upgrade? do these speakers like to be spiked? Thanks in advance.
