The Internet is Dying - Is It Worth Saving?
Jeff Matthews replied to RealMarkDeneen's topic in Lounge
The Internet has exponentially accelerated the spread of information and knowledge. I couldn't imagine losing all of this. One person's brainwashing is another's entertainment, knowledge, etc. $1,000's for hi fi, but baseball is stupid? If we put you in charge of the rules of the Internet, you'd just be the next arbiter in line. It's ironic that the establishment crowd and the anti-establishment crowd seem to be equally paranoid of misuse and abuse of the Internet. Maybe it's a healthy balance. -
At least proponents agree that it has value because people ascribe value to it. The same argument is s made concerning gold. So, the real question is which asset is more likely to suffer loss of faith?

The allure of crypto was that it was not regulated. Now, we are seeing what happens without regulation. I wonder if Congress will regulate it, thereby validating its investment value, or let it die a natural death.

This has been my experience. I gave it up before and stuck to whole foods. It worked. A few years later, I started indulging again, and there's no doubt that for me, refined sugar is great while you gulp it down, but it's so unsatisfying, that I gorge on it. I'm going back to whole foods. A couple of pieces of fruit beats a bag of chips. Fewer calories and more satisfying.

Some Forum Friends (Family) Need Our Help

Glad to hear you're alright. Good luck to you, Christy! -
Hi, Everyone. It's been a while. My brother asked me to post to get information, including contact information, on anyone who can recap his LaScala xovers back to factory spec? Thanks.

This used to be conventional thought.

I am a Yes fan, but Close to the Edge doesn't do it for me. I think their best album is Album. Fragile is next. After those 2, there's not a whole lot left. Of course 90125 is in its own sphere. It, too, is a great album.

Keep good records and pay your taxes. Trying to cheat the tax man simply isn't worth it.

Close threads if need be, but why delete them?
Jeff Matthews replied to JL Sargent's topic in Lounge
Does anyone recognize a pattern? I think we should just categorize this thread as, "Discussion #2," and rather than hash it out in long form every 2-4 weeks, somebody could just post a thread titled, "Discussion #2." We'd all know in advance where it was headed, so it could be closed before the first reply, and nobody would miss anything. -
Other people have tried to explain it to me, and I have read on it. Still, I cannot find that magic thing that says, "Here's the value." What it sounds like is a pyramid scheme. As long as people put their money into it, it has value. That much is true. On the other hand, stocks have constraints based on performance, measured by revenues, growth, margins, free cash flow, etc. Crypto has none of that. For that reason, stocks are something which are much easier to understand. However, even then, I have reservations on the ones which don't pay dividends. Sure, you can read up all about how well a company has performed, but it will pay you nothing, and it will keep paying nothing forever (I realize they can change dividend policy). What is the value of an income stream of $0? Still, people buy them and put their faith in them, giving them value. I just don't know anymore...

What about if the machine freezes, and the only thing you can do is to reboot?

I am intrigued by the RAM drive, but I know little about its stability. I know if you shut off the machine, RAM is toast. I know they must have safety features to prevent data loss, but how vulnerable is a RAM drive to data loss, despite these safety features? I do legal work, which includes a lot of drafting and commenting on documents every day. An unlucky "blip" for me would not be good.

This is true if you buy a mid or lower grade machine. Performance will drop off as software installation and updates start building a lot of bloat. I used to buy $599 computers, too, but the last few times, I went with the latest high performance CPU, plenty of RAM and an SSD. I get years out of them. Intel i-7's have been out a good, long time, and they are still fast in relation to almost everything else. I am sometimes tempted to get an i-9, but I can wait. IMO, $1,200 buys a really good computer. Avid gamers will want much more.

When I was young, many of my friends and I were allowed to run the streets and play in the fields, etc. Most parents seem too nervous to allow that these days. So, what's a kid left to do?
