  1. I will post some pics of the bass bins next week. I am still staining them and waiting for the drivers to be delivered. Based on the guidelines I have read they are way to small for an 18" driver at 2'x2'x3'H but were about as big as I could go....though now I am looking at going 40" wide with the K402.
  2. I am not planning on using the jubilee bass bin, at least in the near-term. My bin are old fashion scoops (undersized though) with a 18" JBL 2240. They should be good to low 40's/high 30's, which is fine for me. I expect to have plenty of grunt in my 20'x25' room with the music I listen to, mostly rock. I don't expect them to be pretty or elegant, but with proper EQ I expect they will get the job done given my criteria.
  3. "there is an acceptable, MUCH smaller horn for the 2-way Jubilee, no?" Good question, I have seen references to "smaller" horns, but don't see any in the commercial catalog. Anyone know the other options, their size, cutoff, and availability/cost? If I don't find another options, it looks like that 200hz bentwood exponential from ebay ($500) may be the only realistic wat to go.
  4. But you didn't tell us the relative humidity and elevation???
  5. Don't loose the cable thought. If the component that has the cable hooked into it is connected to your audio system, i.e. to listen to cable TV through your audio system, it can be a major source of hum. This type of hum is also typically intermittent and/or of varying loundness. Next time you hear the hum, just disconnect the cable from your cable box. Obviously, is the hum goes away your cable is the source. Is that's the case, call up your cable compan, show them that the cable is the cause, and make them fix it.
  6. I'm listening. The K402 is physically (in each dimension) as large as my room will stand. If that size horn will not effectively do 250hz, then such a low crossover to a mid driver is a no go realistically. Still, I gotta believe that we are discussing tradeoffs here. I am hoping that the benefits of getting the base bin out of reproducing voices will offset any shortcoming identified previously. I don't claim to know the absolute answer to that question, but I sure would like to be in a position to hear the tradeoffs for myself...
  7. At the end of the days, I still need to pay the bills. I already have too much time invested in this project and I would like to at least hear how it comes out. A great scenario would be to get the K402 horns, which would both satifsy my immediate needs AND provide the option to migrate into Jubilees
  8. Thanks Roy, regardless of the answer I greatly appreciate the consideration. I have said it before, Klipsch is a great company and I am happy to be a customer whenever I can. I seem to have the opposite problem in my house. My wife is the primary instigator and keeps telling me to go ahead and stop messing around and just get the Jubilees...
  9. Yes, we really need a large Tractrix horn! As originally posted, there are very few options. I would love to have that K402 and find our how this driver does 200hz for myself... I'm betting it would with no problem at all (in home audi application that is) and sounding very good doing it. I talked at length with the US importor (a pro audio guy) and expected him to laugh when I mention 200hz. His reply was should be no problem at those levels with a steep crossover.
  10. I'm looking at the same 4590 driver you have. There are lots of reports of using it down to the 200s in home audio application. There is a guy that reportedly modified the driver and uses it with a 250hz horn, crossed over at 220. Here's a thread discuss the driver mods http://www.bd-design.nl/forum/forum_entry.php?id=10736 And here's the specific product that crosses over that low http://www.bd-design.nl/forum/forum_entry.php?id=10719
  11. Dana, To leverage the capabilities of the BMS driver, I would choose a larger horn capable of close to 200hz in order to get the voice out of the bass bin. I am sold on the need/advantage of EQ and will be using a digital crossover with a PEQ, likely a Behringer. I already have a 400hz fc round tractrix. I have not purchased the BMS driver yet. I am still waiting for assistance audio to send me a PO so I can pay for it. Sounds like Roy may not be able to sell the horn separately, which I completely understand. That would leave me with quite a choice. I still don't have my bass bins up yet, so my next step is to put the BMS purchase on hold and see how they respond/sounds between 200-500 hz. If they do OK up to 500, I am seriously considering the K402/K69....which would leave me with a Jubilee migration path. Any thoughts on how the BMS would work on the K402?
  12. Excellent reference, thanks! In the equation f min = 1129 ft/sec / (D/4) where D is the horn mouth dimention, intuition would tell me that D should be in feet. The answer I got (i.e. around 1200 hz for a 40" wide K402 in the horizontal) does not seem right. Should D being in inches? Regarding the challenges of a coaxial, it seems the challenges they are addressing are related to a cone mid with a compression high. The BMS is a compression driver for both the MF and HF. Looks like it's not too bad as long as I sit within 10 degree off axis, I can live with that. I would hate to even see the temporal alignment of the scoops I have. Good thing I only paid $750 for the pair of cabinets with JBL 2240 drivers (reconed with non-JBL parts of course for that price...)
  13. I have not tested the bass bin and expect them to be significantly flawed and would not considered them a fixed point. I am fairly sold on the BMS driver, give the single source point and ability to get down to near 200hz (several sucessful reports of that in "high end' audio now). The bins are way undersized, not sure if they even qualify as a horn, for an 18' driver at approx 2'x2'x3+'. There is only one "fold", like a larger (and back loaded) LB76 (I thnk I got that number right) I am triamping and expect to be using a digital crossover/EQ. As such, I expect to be able to use the parametric eq to resolve most of the nasties. I am not looking for the last word, my priorities are "big" immediate sound that can reproduce the bass with enough energy to provide a "realistic" experience. In comparison, I love my Corns but the bass in no way come close to meeting that criteria. Besides, if I build the "perfect" speaker I would not have the opportunity to continue to play around....what fun would that be?
  14. Greetings, I have not posted in awhile but have been lurking, I had trouble with my password around the time of the site migration and never took the time to get it worked out until now. I believe I have completed the path with my super corns and am now in the processing of moving on to the next bestest thing ever. I have my base bin, rear loaded scoop with JBL 2240 drivers, and have decided on BMS 4590 drivers which I am in the process of ordering. I have a 400hz Tractrix (supossedly, looks more like a 500-600 to me) mid horn, but I want to get the cross over down to somewhere between 200-300. I have already convinced myself that the driver will go this low in my application so please don't try to ruin my fantacy on that. There seems to are very few options for horns that large. First, we have the very nice looking bentwood 200hz exponential horns for a rather attractive price ($495). http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=002&item=120029495060 Having performed the highly scientific human voice (i.e. mine talking through it) test through like size tractrix and exponential horn, and adding in what I have read, I really done want to invest further in an exponential horn Next, we have a VERY large 140 hz round tractrix, also at a reasonable price ($1000). http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9718926978 This horn is too large, never thought I would say that, (approx 36") and by the way shipping alone is around $1200. Last, we have the new ORIS 250hz horn, it does not say whether it is tractrix or not, that has been specifically tested with the BMS driver. Cost, not including assembly or painting is around ($1200). More at http://www.bd-design.nl/ With that long winded intro, my questions related to the Jubilee horn are: 1. It is obvious that the KPT-402-HF is a large horn, what is the expected cutoff? Will it go to 200hz 2. I read that they may be available for sale, Roy POC, but can't find that thread. Is so, any price on the horn only? 3. Any input on the Jubilee horn versus the other options stated, in this application, are greatly appreciated. 4. Other options, besided build my own... Thanks!
  15. GREAT, they might have been good prices until you announced them to the world (i.e. a large part of the world that cares) [] I also have the K-51. Not sure if it is an anomoly, or the room, but mine had a nasty peak (6-10db) from around 4-6K. I added a bandpass to it and it perfectly leveled it through to were the tweeter takes over.
  16. I have a gold with around 200 hours on it. I just upgrade my turntable to a VPI scout. I personally do not like the grado at all. The midrange is not at all good in my book, with both with the VPI and project 1.2 tables I used it on. The denon 103R ($250) absolutely crushes it. You can have my grado for $70 if you want it. I personally question how much better the gold is than the lower line, same basic design. I think you are getting well into diminishing return, within the prestige line, when you get to the gold and are in the price teritiory of much better cartridges. If you are stuck on a grado, I would go with a lower model and save up for a step up and go MC and a much better MM...or buy mine used if you absolutely must have a gold...
  17. Let us know how you like that FOB beast. I would expect to have to do some tweeking and swapping of some of the components but if the basics are there (layour, trannies, etc.) seems like it could be a deal and a lot of fun tinkering with.
  18. I expect to be flamed for this, but what about some of the overseas offerings listed on ebay. Just one example, not meant to be the only one....just a representative example http://cgi.ebay.com/Goldbaile-300B-Class-A-Vavle-Tube-Int-Amp-NR_W0QQitemZ9706706760QQcategoryZ39997QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Given the cost advantages over there, I have wonder whether they are really competative soundwise with the "fancy" high priced stuff. Part of me wants to think that they are just as good and a deal....isn't the magic of a SET in the circuit simplisity? If so, why can't someone with cheaper access to parts and labor make one that is competative at a low price. Any experiences? P.S. - Buy American []
  19. Give me a call when your ready to cut a big hole in the fronts, and a small hole in the back, to drop a K401 in those babies. [] With the price of the used ones going up, $3500 is starting to not sound so bad.....they look great, congrats!
  20. If money is a factor, try one of these for $140.....smoooooooooooth http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-956 I have one and unhooked it, still not sure it is better or worse than my $12K audio research VT150s. I am almost afraid of the answer. I bought it for summer use here in Phoenix,,,,
  21. Carl, Looks like the photo still does not work. Can you sent me a PM with your email, and I will forward the guys email with the pic. If I PM you, I expect to have the same problem attaching the photo. It would be great to get your take on the photo as they just don't look right and I have not been able to find pics of the 846s Jim
  22. Thanks, I also just happen to have a pair of 77-M stilling around. These don't have ports in the front, I have not seen the backs. Should the drivers be 416 Z and 806s? If I look I plan to inspect the drivers as the boxes look DIY to me...the guy says they are original and from his grandfather I'll try the photo again, never had a problem before....
  23. Here's a pic. Other than the color, do these smell like DIY versions? Seems like a move sidewise from my supercorns Price is down to $700....almost the point I could part out....
  24. "You build speakers that flirt with the high end" Flirt?, heck my Corns knock down and stomp over most "high-end"
  25. Local deal, should I go for it. I need to decide quickly. I already have corns with 401 horns....
