  1. Too mind boggling to even get your head around this one. Charles Whittman....... Bell tower in Texas Luby's Cafeteria Colombine High School...... VT ........Blacksburg, Virginia

  3. The last time I saw Phil alive was in the hospital. Two men, friends, in an awkward silence each knowing but not knowing what to say. Finally Phil said "well....I've got cancer". I looked at him and replied "what a relief....I thought you were going to say you have aids". Phil shot back still in good humor " if I could get out of this bed I would kick your ***". Phil was buried one week later. Yes....I know its hard to quit....but do it anyway. Chuck
  4. How is it possible to be an assertive non-smoker in North Carolina? Tobacco road or not.....when you have a good friend who did two tours of duty in Viet Nam and came home without a scratch and was later cut down by a noxious weed called tobacco....its not that hard. Prior to that my father a smoker of 60 years died of lung cancer. He smoked two packs of Chesterfield non filtered cigarettes each day. If you're worried about quitting....let me share this with you....when the oncologist tells you you have six months to live.....and he was right almost to the day....suddenly cigarettes aren't that important. Remarkably you will not crave nicotine while you're dying those last few months. Sorry if this is too blunt or personal...but I've seen this.... and for the life of me I do not understand you smokers who are so deep in denial that you will justify your addiction at all cost. I wish you the best but I don't understand you. Do you think this is a dress rehearsal for a second try next time. How can you put such a value on music and such a low value on your own health. Chuck
  5. Tom.....sorry to take so long to reply but the pc at home was not cooperating. Yes they have been doing pancreas transplants for about 20 years but even some doctors aren't aware of this. My wife received a kidney from her sister in 1997 and a pancreas a few months later. The first pancreas rejected after 9 months. The second pancreas was attached differently and has lasted 7 years so far. All the major medical centers or the AMA should be able to give you information. Julia has her surgery at Duke Regional Medical Center in Durham, N.C. UNC right next door from Duke also does them. You don't think much about organ donations until you or someone close to you needs one. When our donor died 8 people were notified to come to Duke or UNC to be prepped for transplants. We later met the heart recipient, the double lung recipient, and the liver recipient. So do what ever you need to do to find out more....you may be able to add a number of years to your 62 year projection. Best of luck and let me know if I can help. Chuck
  6. Tom...... if there are not other condtions ruling it out have you considered a pancreas transplant? My wife got a kidney and a pancreas about 8 years ago and is no longer diabetic. She had juvenile or type I diabetes and later kidney failure. Her quality of life is very good and she appreciates every new day. She has way more energy than I do and I am healthy. If you haven't already looked into getting on the list....run don't walk. Anyone out there who is not a organ donor should consider being one. The most important part is to let your family know your wish to donate. Then fill out the card and stick it in your bill fold. Thousands die each day waiting for a donor. Thanks for listening[] Chuck
  7. As a rather assertive non smoker who has seen the long term consequences of using tobacco I applaud the efforts you are all making. I sincerely wish you luck in your attempts. I could talk for days on this subject but you all have heard it before...so I will just say.....The best time to stop was the day you started...the next best time is today. Best of luck....let me know if I can help. Chuck
  8. Don't know about the Sony but when the tape runs off the side of the pinch roller on one of my three Teacs it is usually due to a problem with the surface of the roller. I have roughed up the rubber surface with 220 grit sandpaper and sometimes it corrects the problem....sometimes you need a new pinchroller.....still readily available. Make sure you didn't get any WD-40 on the rubber. I talked with Pierre Sprey at Mapleshade a couple of times....think he is recording at 15 ips and as I recall using pro DBX and tubed mikes...not positive .....been awhile.
  9. Does anyone know of a member with more post in one year than Fritz? If not we need to think of an appropriate award. How about you Buck....whats your one year high?
  10. Speakerfritz.....sorry to hijack your thread. Chuck
  11. Buck....can't recall where the joints were or if they ever found any.....it was in the southern part of their cross country trip....towns such as Algiers, Memphis, Eudora, Vicksburg, Natchez, Port Allen, Port Orleans, Potash, Venice, Deweyville.... It is an easy and enjoyable read about a far simpler time in America....I guess you would call this group of travelers beatniks....free spirits...still too early for hippies. As Jim said....find a copy! If you don't like it....I will buy it from you. Chuck
  12. Which one? THE ONLY ONE.........ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The one that would like to find that jazzjoint that Jack K. was talkin' 'bout....................... Buckster.....if you haven't read "On The Road" try and find a copy.....you won't be able to put it down. Chuck
  13. Congrats to you as well....hope your pool was a big one. Now can we just fast forward to Carolina in the final four next year?
  14. Larry....Spongeworthy is another fine Carolina gentleman....and is meticulous in the care of his equipment.... Chuck
  15. Forgot to say congrats on the pool...a large one I hope. Yeah...I was not very impressed with the interviews.....I guess they were not hired to be articulate.....and I wrote some off to their excitement. I will say you usually hear something a little more intelligent from Carolina and Duke players...with a few exceptions (Rasheed Wallace). Dean Smith's goal was to make quality men first and players second and Roy continues that tradition. It goes without saying that college for too many players is just a venue to showcase their talents for the pros and not an institution of higher learning. Oh well.
  16. Congrats on number 4000! Thats about 333/month or 11/day everyday! You have been busy....but as long as you're having fun and it sounds like you are....keep um coming Chuck
  17. I watched the whole thing actually..... The post game interview with Noah he said "were gonna do it all day and all night long...I know ya'll don't know what I'm talking about but these guys do" I must admit I have no idea what they were going to do except party....maybe???? I hope thats all[:^)]
  18. Thanks Pat....that would have been easier. Chuck
  19. Should have proofed and then posted. Please replace "to" with too and "there" with their. There.....much better!
  20. Reading some of the room treatments that have been suggested I realized I had heard many of these tips before. Mapleshade has a list of "free audio upgrades" that include the following. Almost everyone sits too far from their speakers (8-10')....try a low chair or pillow and sit 5' away. Nearly everyone sits too high The "tweeters at ear level" rule sounds logical but fails when tested. For a test sit on 1 or 2 phone books. For much improved bass and huge soundstage put your listening chair right against the wall behind you and move your speakers in to 5' in front of you and 7' apart. No room treatments will yield this much bass improvements. Lift all speaker, power, and interconnects wires 8" off any non wool carpet or tile . Remove the speaker cloth or foam grill and snip off the plastic phase ring....treble will be improved as much as 100%. Almost all speakers are on stands that are too tall (24" and up). Try them on the floor tilted back with a wood or metal block under the front. Haven't tried these but may work on one or two and get back to you.
  21. Welcome to the forum daz39. The usual sources for xovers are Dean G and Bob Crites here on the forum, and Al Klappenberger at ALK Engineering. I have heard good things about all three and have used Bob's type A and Al designed some for my LS with Altec 511 horns and 902 drivers. I am sure others will provide the links you need to contact these guys and perhaps others. Chuck
