  1. yes large rears are choice when they get a full range signal of course. more 5.1 material these days are putting more full range/low bass in the surround channels. also, prologic II, dts:neo & logic 7 modes are driving the surrounds full range. & of course the 5-7 speaker stereo modes are full range all around. just don't compromise on that timbre match of the higher drivers to do it.
  2. yeah kain, if you don't already have a receiver & want to use a good power amp, then get a good pre/pro to match w/ it. you won't regret spending the few extra bucks now. iow, a good power amp magnifies what it gets. so you want the same or better quality audio signal going into it from the preamp/processor. you've got great audio quality speakers, now maintain that quality on down the line. remember, klipsch speaks are very revealing of any imperfections they get fed.
  3. i'm not taking any side here but for laughs & to ease the tension i'll repost this old link of a funny episode of Tom Nousaine VS Tranparent Cables http://www.vxm.com/21R.64.html
  4. glenda, thanks for the invite.! you're on! now if I/we can only make it out there to visit (& ski).
  5. click below to see those i own. my fav of those i own are the cornwalls. my fav of all klipsch is the klipschorn. me live in kansas.
  6. wino, outa curiousity which did you do - biwire or replace the straps w/ wire? here's a hint from boaise - when replacing gold straps w/ wire, instead of messing w/ 4 short lengths of wire, simply measure & strip enough bare wire off each lead to thread through both top & bottom posts. iow, the same wire is running through both. you'll probably have to run through the low posts 1st, but that doesn't make any dif. that's how i did my rf before i got the biwire cables.
  7. jim & glenda, yeah i'll have to stop out & see ya when i get out. i'll stop by golden 1st & bring you a gift. or do you like pony kegs of coors? may have my ladyfriend along. i like her new jeans, perfume, shoes, purse, boots, etc. she just got in the last week too. oh yeah & she also got some good salmon.
  8. hey its ms jim.! good point glenda - men spend money more efficiently. big ticket toys. shopping isn't a pleasant experience. its a means to an end.
  9. if i had my ground loop nightmare to do over gain, 1st thing is to use 3:2 cheater plugs on any 3-prong power plugs. then after that easy, cheap fix decide if you want to go any further or leave it at that.
  10. doug, noticed that. great minds....
  11. yes there's both sides to whether to use a wdst like the rs instead of a direct like the rc. . lots of depends, but the best way would be to demo both in your room & see which you prefer w/ various material & modes. one thing to keep in mind, if your receiver does dts 6.1 discrete, w/ more of that format out & coming, in that case the rear surround (6th channel) can contain entirely different sound/effects. when a plane flys over your head, do you want it to go from the front center spot to all over the rear wall or maintain its direction in a direct radiating speak like an rc-3?
  12. yeah as zan say if you have no sub fronts are large. in fact when you tell the receiver sub:no then it should auto-force a large setting for the fronts. the other are small speaks & should be set small. interference & room node issues come into play as to large/small settings when you have a sub that could be covering the same low range as the fronts or other speaks set large. solution to that is to set large speakers small (a tragedy cutting large speaks at 80hz) or get a receiver or pre/pro w/ adjustability in its processor down to 40-60hz (the solution).
  13. lan, a lot of variables here including your own ears & tastes. but since the cross setting on your pioneer goes only as low as 80hz, i'd set it there. then set everything to small (yes including the bigger front rf-3) & turn the crossover knob on the sub all the way up (to i think 120hz), assuming here you have the sub hooked to the receiver's sub out jack. then you can play w/ the fronts speak setting large & hear if you like that or you have lower quality bass because the sub & fronts are interfering with each other. be sure to especially test w/ some 2-channel music if you're going to be using it for that as well. as for the peak manager start w/ it flat or 0db. wouldn't use it unless you have to. you should also calibrate the speaker levels w/ a sound meter & the receiver test tones or a test dvd.
  14. kyle, instead of a Y adapter you can also just get 2 sub interconnect cables & run the 2nd one from the 1st rp lfe out to the lfe in of the other. aka daisy-chain the rp sub sections. so if say you set your yammy to both, the sub will be getting all the lfe, & will also get the low bass up to 90hz before getting filtered out, via the sub out - lfe in connection. now what goes through your speaker cables to the rp terminals & sub section will also be filtered by the rp crossover at 90hz. so what i'm saying is the rp is already getting that same material from your receiver sub out. still you want to attach the bottom rp posts to the top posts that are connected to the receiver fronts speaker terminals, whether w/ the gold straps, wire, or at the receiver (biwiring the top & bottom & removing the straps), just to make sure the sub doesn't miss any info & because its summed & compatiable w/ the lfe in jacks that way (as it says in the manual).
  15. if you also use the rca interconnects from the receiver sub out to the rp lfe in, you're in effect biwiring. if you do that & also do what arena is doing, that's in effect tri-wiring. ok, if it yields any audible sound improvement. though imho, doing the step of using the sub out of the receiver has the greatest benefit in sound quality. oh & the subs should be facing out unless they're all the way up against the side wall, imo. mine sounded best that way w/ the rp about 6 ft from the side walls anyway. you can always try it both ways to see what sounds best to you.
  16. dk, your rf-3 are loud too - 98db @ 1W/1M. but that's why its a good idea to calibrate your sub level & speaker levels w/ a meter. so they're balanced. iow, you'll have a control to set the output level of the sub itself too. as for the movie big bass, that's what the lfe (.1) channel is for. it is speced to have low frequecy effects to a sub at up to 10db over the other material level. & that's why its a seperate channel - so you can get those dynamic bass bursts to a capable sub w/o overloading your other channels/speakers.
  17. j, yeah these movies w/ dreams or even dreams within a dream are complex. trouble is sometimes the writer &/or director leave it up to subjective interpretation. that drives me nuts because i try to find if its suppose to be solvable or not. when its not there's no end & i self-destruct. sometimes you just have to throw up your hands & say what the ___, that's how it is. only makes sense right? i'll have to watch it again to keep up w/ you because i thought i had it figured out then, but can't remember a lot now. but i remember i too thought it was part dream, part reality. but seems they usually follow the "wizard of oz" theme. reality - dream/fantasy - reality. of course they can always mess w/ that too.
  18. justin, be weary not to let anyone near the speakers that might wang chung on them.
  19. nice q-man. i have that same halogen torch lamp anyway. now the top front speaks are lascala front effects? yowza.
  20. congrats just. nice looking baby cornwalls. at 1st glance w/o reading i thought they were cornwalls. they seem to look bigger. trick photography going on there?
  21. thanks doug. that makes it easier. these kind of movies get me thinking TOO much. got any good site's for vanilla sky or its foreign inspiration "open your eyes"? now that's a subjective flick. but always eager to recheck my thesis. j, lynch's "blue velvet" is a classic. also still need to see that more recent "lost highway" all the way through.

    How is Windtalkers?

this dvd has a lot of big explosions & war effects. even if only in dolby ex.
  23. moon, you might want to use a test disc like video essentials instead. take it you're getting or got a sound meter(?). here's what they say on dolby or thx "reference level". sorry i was going by horned's sub "ref level". basically that reference level should be when the receiver is set to 0db & you get 85db w/ 105db peaks. iow, when you play your receiver tones at 0db it should compensate to set the meter to 85db. sounds like some don't do this. but when we play material w/ dif components & klipsch you can see this is all blown to h anyway. if i put mine on 0db w/ a loud dvd its more like 115db w/ 120db peaks. yowza. iow, use the ref level on the volume dial that works for your stuff & your ears. the important thing w/ calibration is to get all the speaks & the sub balanced at equal levels.
  24. "That's just it boa12, when i have material playing the hiss is still very loud to me. If i'm watching a movie and there is just dialogue, all i'll here is this loud, constant hiss." yeah it can be a delicate balance between discrete circuits & noise, but that sounds extreme. like said, if you like the speaks & have the option, get something else w/ quality sound & less noisy.
