  1. Mike, I've been busy most weekends with the scooter thing. Also working on a pair of Cornwalls that were in need of some help. When I get them finished I will load up the truck and come on over. I do remember hearing your SVS which prompted me to get one. Later found a steal on a Mirage BPS400 which to me, blew away the SVS. Still have the SVS sitting in a closet. Sorry for stealin' the thread. Now back to your regularly scheduled program.
  2. McFly!!! Why are you still reading this!!! Go get 'em.
  3. I have a 555 Mk II that I interchange with an Onkyo M504 and a Scott 299C. I think I like the Adcom with it's matched pre a little more then the Onkyo with it's matched pre although it is very hard to do an A\B test. I still have the Onkyo hooked up due to both laziness and the fact that it has a few more inputs than the Adcom and it really is a close call between the 2. I listen through a pair of Klipschorns and to me, there is no harshness at all. I've had the Carver TFM 35x and it too was a very nice amp but my pre at the time was an HK730 and not a dedicated matching piece. If you can get the 555 for a good price, I'd say go for it.
  4. The walnut oil Cornwall tops are starting to shape up. I used spirits instead of turp because I didn't want to make yet another trip to Ace Hardware. I needed to remove the excess from both tops. The 1st top I did like Klipschguy said except I used 320 wet\dry versus the 600. Even with 320, the build up was very tough to take off. I went as far as to using an orbital sander which actually was the smartest thing I could have done...No...actually the smartest thing I could have done was to wipe the darn things off prior to walking away, but I digress. Cornwall #1 took a couple of hours to finish and since my ADD took a hold of me, I decided to strip the 2nd CW, re-sand, steel wool, and stain again. That took a lot less time but the results were also outstanding...to a point. I used the same ingredients on both speakers but CW 2 looks more "red" than CW 1. I dont think anyone would notice from 12-15' apart but when the speakers are right next to each other #2 is more red. I need to work on the sides a little then either get some tweeter diaphrams from Bob Crites or just pick-up a pair of his tweeters. Then I'll either find some grills to buy or make some myself. I must say there is a certain satisfaction to buying relatively cheap and making your speakers, your speakers. But it would sure be nice to be able to plop down $3K on a new pair of Cornwall III's and it not effect your income.
  5. Cool. I will try another coat 50\50 with spirits. Definately don't want to remove the finish again and start from scratch. Thanks for the advice.
  6. I'm in the running for the stupidest human award. I need a little advice. So I have this pair of '78 Cornwalls that I have been refinishing. I had them looking good when I decide to finish them with BLO. I was on the 3rd coat of medium thickness, 1st 2 coats where very light, and about a week into the project when I had a minor emergency and had to take my son to the doctor. (He's alright) I left the oil on the speakers and haden't been back to them in 2 days. Needless to say the oil dried and now the tops have hardened linseed on them. How do I remove the dried oil without screwing up the finish. I've been rubbing the heck out of it, but it doesn't look much better. The sides fared a lot better then the tops. Was thinking about some mineral spirits to loosen up the dried oil but I thought it might damage the finish. Help!!!
  7. I'm speechless right now. I pray for you and the family. Take care.
  8. The 530 is a boat anchor now. I have a newer 5 disc Sony SACD\DVD that takes a while to read "any" disc I load. It doesn't matter whether it's a CD\DVD\SACD store bought or burnt, it takes around 30-45 seconds to read anything. I had a 530 way back when and it was a lot quicker.
  9. Why get Quartets when Forte's could be had for the same? They take up about the same floorspace. Go for Forte's. Just an opinion.

  11. I just started a thread over in 2 channel after finding this one: wolfgangsvault.com All you '60's and '70's Fillmore East lovers will really enjoy this one.
  12. Bill Graham's incredible music collection is on-line at this site. You can listen for free but unfortunately can't download yet. Anyway, the older guys on this forum will appreciate this one.
  13. That sounds like a good deal to me Michael. Thanks for the offer. I'm not allowed near sharp or pointy objects. I had to promise the motorcycle dealer I wouldn't work on the bike in order to buy one. []
  14. Anyone have a pair of Cornwall grills they would like to part with. My new project is a pair of '78 Cornwalls that 1 grill is toast. Actually the cloth is still salvagable but the board is broken. I really don't have a color preference. I remember seeing some at one tme on the board but the new search is not as friendly (good) as the old search.
  15. I know of a pair of these locally and was wondering what they are worth. From what I gather they are the L150 Millenium and in fair condition. The "white" woofer was replaced a few years back with a "black" woofer. The Speaker Exchange in St. Pete did the work and they are an auhtorized JBL service center so I'm sure the parts are factory authorized or at least meet the specs of the original woofer. FYI I just picked a pair of 78 walnut Cornwalls in fair condition. Should be a nice refinishing product. I will try to get some pics up later. Thanks.
  16. Just found a set of Cornwalls 1's today that the owner said have a slight water mark on 1 speaker. Not much more known than that and I will see them on Sunday. May need to refinish both but it's nothing I haven't done before although I was still a virgin when it came to BLO. I also never thought I'd replace my Oiled Oak '87 CW II's but a nice set of 1's may do the trick.
  17. As has been suggested on this forum quite regularly, I used boiled linseed oil on a pair of oiled oak CF2 I own. Went with a light sanding with #0000 steel wool then applied a very thin coat of BLO and let it dry. Waited a day then used a cloth to rub off any excess as well as to shine it up. Great results on the look but the speaker still smells like a paint factory. Thank goodness I only did one at a time. Anyhow, I know some cut the BLO 50/50 with spirits but it seemed like most just used straight BLO. How long will I have to endure this smell? Or should I just enjoy the cheap buzz?
  18. Don't let the Florida address fool you. It get's cold here too. The high today will only be about 68 degrees!! []
  19. Can't say how to replace the plastic trim, but I seem to recall others saying Krylon black #777 spraypaint was what they used to refinish their black speakers. Too bad the search function ain't what it use to be or I'd find the post. I'm going to need it sor my scratched up Academy someday.
  20. $400 is a steal. Run, don't walk, and pick those babies up. They are definately comparable to Cornwalls that many on this forum (myself included) are ga-ga about.
  21. IMO the Forte's are better all around speakers than the Heresy's. You would want a sub with the Hersey because although they have nice clean bass, they do not go as low as the Forte's. I have listened to my Forte's with a Pioneer SX1000tw and did like it very much. I feel the HK730 is a little punchier and can be had for >$100 on the "bay". Very nice system she is getting. At $300 for the Forte's, that is a very good deal.
  22. Parasound on the "bay" with 2 days left. Look for auction #5858835180.
  23. The guy that has them for sale here wants around $500. I would have offered somewhere in the neighborhood of $300 but if a Hersey could blow it away, I don't think I will be trying it out. I could easily find a pair of Hersey's for ~$300 locally but I already know what they sound like and recently sold a pair for $250.
  24. Does anyone here know about these speakers? The things I've read on the internet have all been positive. I realize this is a Klipsch forum but I do value your opinions. And not to worry, the 5 pair of Klipsch I have here aren't going anywhere. Thanks.
  25. Please accept my apology about the speakers. It was his wife that has decided not to sell the speakers. She feels they will fit nicely into the new house and she loves the sound. He was for selling the LAS and I made sure for 2 days before I posted anything about them for sale. I wont make that mistake again. Sorry for the inconvenience.
