  1. OMG - I just ordered '5 gallons' off Amazon! Got it yesterday. The DVD - Haven't watched it yet. Is that what you mean? Been listening/watching Halucinogenetics lately while puttering. Whoa - Cornwalls just moved up on my list.
  2. LOLL! How fun you all are! Yes - I was heavily into Yes, Genesis, etc. I did my Prog rock thing. Sorry, but if flipping channels in the car and I hear 'Roundabout', yes, I turn it off. Give me Gates of Delirium(sp)' - far more interesting. Yes, I'm going to email Who & Pete. Hopefully 'they' will understand I'm 'real'. LOL
  3. LOL - OK OK. I'll shut up. I know I have to listen, just thought I'd whittle the list via opinion. Colter - I'll look for that thread. I'm impressed with you seeing Yes so many times. And it seems your Mr. Cornwall. Yep, this helps. I'm leaning towards Khorns & cornwalls right now. I sincerely appreciate everyone's help & I'll be rereading this thread several times. And if anyone has anything they want to unload, give me a holler. (Colter - you don't have a 'House of Klipsch', you have a 'City'. Keep me in mind). About amps - I read something on About.com about the amp/receiver being critical for these older Klipsches. We knew this when we bought our harmon AVR. We're willing to add something appropriate, but I think I have to pick the speaker first - then work on that aspect. I'm seeing alot of Marantz talked about. I've a friend who I 'know' hasn't turned his on his older (70's/early 80's?) in at least 10 years. Not sure what model, but it's beautiful. Trying to find the model number now but it would be a miracle. Not sure my ears are good enough to tell the difference anyway. Just can't go there right now. Overwhelming. I thank you all for all your comments & help! Really a great forum!
  4. No no! Seriously, I'm just a neurotic anal crazy woman who's been wanting to upgrade her KG4's for years now. Just coming out of lurkdom. I thought the Yes thing would be a great indicator. If it works for Yes, I truely believe it would work for other stuff. I think it's a good peg point. I'm real, & no baiting here. Just want to do the right thing. Took us 6 months to choose a TV. It's just how things work here. But really/truely, no baiting here. I want to stick with what feels right, and the speakers we listened to at stores, left me flat somehow. Something drew me to Klipsch years ago and I should stick with it. 'Roundabout' - Actually, it would be a perfect song to judge with. It's just so overplayed. But thinking about it - yea. Roundabout would cover alot of territory. If a speaker can do that amazingly - it's on my list. My goal is to eliminate a few. My immediate goal is to whittle down Cornwall, Chorus, Forte. Jeff - You are recommending Khorns or Cornwalls. Are you suggesting for this example (Yes), I could safely elminate the Chorus at least? And do you feel the Khorns better for this song over cornwalls? If so, this is important. DrWho - Do you still prefer the Chorus? You mentioned not completing your test. Hurry! I guess in the end, any of these might be an improvement as long as I don't go downhill in the bass department. On another note, I bought a new camera & was playing. I focused on my grill-less KG4s. Saw cracks in the rubber on the image. This is new. Hubby recently hooked up some other speakers to attempt a 5:1 deal. Van Helsing came on (which surprisingly was enjoyable) & we cranked it. I fear Van Helsing ruined my babies. Either that or the new HK receiver? (Had an 80's Yamaha prior). I've yet to walk up to them to close inspect, but they are now tainted. My replacement goal kicked up a notch in urgency. I'll make them right someday and will never part with them. It's looking like most anything would be an improvement over my current state. And yes - the khorns would fit nicely. We measured, and in the grand scheme of things - it's petite.
  5. Wait wait wait! I go to the store, come back, and there's even MORE choices. LOL The goal is to whittle it down, not ramp it up. You - you... Klipsch people you! Heresys - That's the ONLY speaker I've heard and no way, no how could I ever dream that would be any semblance of improvement over KG4s. I see it as a downgrade! Definitely a downgrade. I'd keel over if I had to listen to them. No bass. YES! OK - Maybe we're onto something here..... Yes has been mentioned. Let's go with that. Big yes fan here. And I'm NOT talking 'Roundabout' stuff. Let's pick a good Yes album. Just imagine the best Yes album in your mind. One that has variety (don't they all?). Pretty, soft parts. Hard parts. Let's imagine the source material is amazing - remastered, bla bla bla.... Here's what I want: 1. "Squire's subsonic bass pedal" & 'plunking' giving me CHILLS. 2. The Bass clear, proper, and hitting me so hard (properly), it would be equivalent to CPR. (but still retaining great mid & high). 3. Speakers that even after a couple years, I turn to hubby and say "wow - doesn't that sound great?" (bonus points for hairs on the back of my neck standing up). 4. Get tears welling up in my eyes on occasion. Yes - I want to me moved to tears they are so good. Yea - Which speakers, if playing Yes - would do the above 4 things for you? Then, maybe I have my speaker? (or at least a shorter list - which is the current goal). Then I can only pray, I can put my David Sylvian 'Secrets of the Beehive' with it's crystal trumpet, deep deep bass, his beautiful barotone voice - will stun me. Come on Yes fans - what say you. Go!
  6. My hubby's visting his Mom in Vegas for xmas. Wish he could put them on the plane. Can't even imagine what's involved with shipping these. ARE you shipping? Or pickup only?
  7. This is getting depressing. [] No perfect answer. No perfect speaker. I'm starting to think I'm going to end up playing the upgrade game. ****** them when I can & figure it out later. I'm putting khorns in the non-shippable category, locked into local sellers for that one. Will be tricky to find the right combo of location, price, and yea - I want them to look good. I'm seeing the Chorus II to be almost the same weight as Cornwall. I previously assumed less weight & cheaper to ship. But perhaps the Cornwalls size puts them in the 'freight' category? IDK. I'm not happy they are going for the same or more than Cornwall I or II. I was starting to think this might be a first purchase while I continue to scout & learn. Not sure why they are priced so high. Rarer? Or more desired? I've eliminated the LaScala & Belle. So, I'm looking at: Khorns, Chorus II, Cornwall II. But I keep stareing at the Forte's 32Hz freq. response. That's gotta be a good thing! Yes? But it seems folks say the Chorus II & Corns are better. Maybe Forte's down the road to augment things? Clearly I have to listen to these things which will be tricky in itself. Then there are all the mods that can be done. And the darned amp/receiver situation. Yipes. Questions: 1. Is the difference in freq. response of 38 to 39 noticeable? What does this mean for me? KG4's are 38, Corns 38, Chorus 39. 2. My KG4's go down to 6 ohms. Everything else is at 8. When I upgrade, what will this mean to my ears? 3. If I go Cornwall, I want the II's. Yes? 4. If I go Cornwall, is there a better year which lessens the issues stated above? Or - can these issues go away with the rope caulk deal, etc. & do they make a signifcant improvement enough where the issues are eliminated? Would it make it all better to where the issues are moot? And about how much would I have to spend to do this?
  8. I'm getting overwhelmed. Dr. Who - I'll address your post paragraph by paragraph... We've not listened to vinyl in years. And won't be. Assume CD's. We have a Harman Kardon avr-435 receiver. Listening to all types of music (except country), but mostly rock if I had to peg it all up in one category. Your description of the khorn's bass as being "tubby" is a bad thing if true. That would bother me more than anything. I want to be punched to the point of being knocked over. The last thing I want is bass that's anything resembling boomy, mushy, soft, fuzzy, etc. Very important to me. To 'me' - the bass thing is the hardest to get right. And a first priority I guess. Home Theatre isn't any big goal. It's 2ndary. I don't want to remotely choose speakers with that in mind. If it will 'also' fly with HT - cool. I did read your Chorus II to Cornwall comparison & need to re-read it. I have to see if you were comparing the Chorus II to Cornwall or Cornwall II. I still need to figure out the differences between the 2 CW's. I also need to learn the differences in sound between the tractrix & exponential horn. I think my KG4s are expo. I don't know what the new ones use, but we found them to be a bit harsh? sounding. As far as volumes - Yes, when we sit down to listen, it's loud! When reading the paper on Sunday morning - not loud. I'm curious as to 'how' loud the Chorus II's need to be to sound good. It' would be interesting to hear them. What I don't like about my speakers? That's rough cuz I've had them forever. I like the depth of the bass, but I want them punchier, cleaner, less boomy. They are currently not placed well & I think I can improve that. The bass sounded MUCH better at my old house then here. I guess I'd like an improvement across the board. More clarity? I think I'm missing some stuff in the middle. Some details. Perhaps most anything would be an improvement. Just gotta nail down the bass. Misc - Gosh, Before I posted today, I thought the Cornwalls would suit me & knock me on my butt and be a beyond better version than the KG4's I'm so used to. I see they have the same Frequency response (38hz-20). The Chorus II is at 39. I've zero clue what one point does to my ears. Khorns are at 33. wow! But what's with the Forte's at 32? I was shocked when I saw that. That's a nice number - yes? LaScala have a very high number and I can't imagine wanting that. That number covers the depth the bass will go to - right? But then after that, the type/quality/size of the woofer comes into play? Back to reading.
  9. Tiger - Yes, they are very pretty indeed. Question... Right now I'm comparing the Chorus II's with Cornwall and reading alot of conflicting posts on what people prefer. I'm also reading with the Forte's, bass isn't it's strong suit. I'm also wondering how much of an upgrade it would be from my KG4's. Either way - I'm wondering if I can get away with something smaller for now (non-khorn level), and get a sub to ensure I get the bass I need? I've zero experience or knowledge about them, only that in the stores I've heard them in - while probably fine for home theatre, ewww for music. Mushy, etc. IS there a sub-woofer that works with music? Proper music bass? Punchy yet goes very deep? Bass that would be 'appropriate'? It's really important to me. If there is such a thing - my options widen I think.
  10. Jeff I'm noticing from the specs, the Cornwall II are MDF but also different tweeter, midrange, and woofer. The non-II having the same woofer as the khorn & LaScala? Different sensitivity. I'm not smart enough to know the differences, but will search on that also.
  11. Coytee - My current room is appalling. Near impossible to setup right khorn or no khorn. It's a small family room that's open. Even if we moved the whole shebang into the living room, it would be rough for the khorns. Actually worse. But the future remodel would be designed for sound/theatre so I could probably either get by or just hold off on the concept of khorns till the remodel. But I see your point. The Khorns are butt up to the walls? Touching? Or do they need to be out a bit? And what of the Cornwall? What is the proper placement for them? Oh my. I sure wish they made a more petite version. I'll take some measurements. Anyone know how MUCH of a wall they need? Say one side is a good long wall, but the other side is 'iffy'. Is there a minimum requirement? Like, can 4' of wall be OK?
  12. They do it all huh? Gosh - can anyone fault these things? I've not read of any. They must have some flaws? OK - An example... Today I listened to 2 totally different types of music: David Sylvian - 'Secrets of the Behive' (beautiful beautiful album - highly recommended) Tool - misc stuff Having speakers that can do justice to both would be a good goal. Wow - 13' apart & 6' back? That's nearly identical to my current room (but with space behind). And it's OK? When I entertained the thought of khorns, I worried about this. We plan to remodel someday and plan on a much larger space. Actually, perhaps I need to consider that future space more in my purchase. So come on - Are the khorns "everything"? Surely there must be something wrong with them. (Tiger - I'll show hubby. They do look pristine, but I must say it would be much more attractive if you lived locally & they were in walnut or such )
  13. It's critically important to me to do this properly. I'm neurotic and anal and when I get new speakers, I'll pretty much sit there for 2 weeks fiddling with position, and analyzing the heck out of every nuance coming into my ears. And hubby is a musician - so add that into the mix and... well... it's serious to us. We've wanted to upgrade for years now but unless you're constantly observing what's coming out, reading, etc. Gosh, it's tough to start this process. We've only hit a few 'stores' but the only thing that came close to us liking were a pair of $8k B&W's. To heck with that! I'd sure love to hear some of these higher end Klipsch compared to them. But we can't. We're willing to spend some money here (not $8k though). The size of the LaScala, Belle, & Khorns is more the issue. Fricking size of a Mini Cooper. Would I buy them if spotted in a garage sale? Oh yes! But to actively persue & have them shipped in? IDK. Hence my leaning toward the Cornwall (or maybe Belle). I just lined up some threads comparing Chorus vs. Cornwall. That particular thread seemed to imply the Chorus II had overall better bass & the Cornwall had more of a in your face midrange? Then I read something about fatigue with the Cornwall. I was surprised at this. I'm sure as I read on, I'll read the exact opposite and get even more confused. I must say the taller, narrower size of the Chorus II is more appealing, but that shouldn't drive my choice. Chicago Pete - Thank you for the kind offer. I may very well take you up on that. I'd love to hear both of them, especially the Khorns. It sure would be interesting to hear the differences between those 2. But I'm sort of afraid cuz I might love the Khorn? I'd rather not. What a monster! LOL
  14. I'm looking at the Chorus which seems to share the same tweeter & midrange as the Cornwall II. But has the k-48 woofer compared to Cornwall's K-34 or K-33 (the latter of which seems to be in the LaSala/Khorn/Belle). I've zero clue as to the differences. Can anyone enlighten me? It's frustrating not being able to hear this stuff. Note: I'm not looking to match anything to my KG4's. I'm looking to replace them & they'll either be delegated to the basement or used as a 2nd pair for HT (though we're not really into that), perhaps temporarily. Is there any type of hierarchy chart for these? I've no clue where the Forte falls on the list vs. Chorus, etc. But the Cornwalls are better than these - correct - then wouldn't I want to at least go for the Cornwalls over Chorus? Tiger - Very nice!
  15. Hi. Hubby & I went speaker shopping and were incredibly dissapointed in what we heard in the $2-4k price point level. Not only that, after begging the stores to turn off their subwoofers - yipes! No bass. With subwoofers on, we felt they were mushy, and I'm thinking subwoofers aren't the way to go for music? Basically, I was vastly dissapointed & we ended up rushing home to listen to my KG4's again. I bought the KG4s in the 80's, preferring them over a higher priced model (not sure which that was), as the KG4 had the bass I needed. I can find fault with them of course, but heck - they sound pretty darned good and I can't see spending $2k+ for something I like less. This experience led me to look into vintage Klipsch. While yes, I'd appreciate it if they were tall, sleek, & cool looking - but for good sound, I'll do what I need to do. Hubby is a musician and listens to far more jazz than I. He's a musician (mostly Sax). We both listen to rock more than anything, but me moreso. If we each had to sacrafice something, while he certainly appreciates good bass - he'd probably steer more towards highs. I'm the bass person and would sacrafice for that. Basically, I want to put in a Primus CD and be in heaven. I'm "thinking" (coming from KG4's), perhaps Cornwalls would please me. I'm also looking at LaScala/Belle, & Khorns. The Khorns freek me out a bit with their size and apparently demanding placement issues - Then again, the LaScalla isn't exactly petite. Cornwalls are the smaller of the batch - right? I've also read a few comments that one might want an extra bass for the LaScala? If so, I can't see the point? If I try to find Cornwalls, I see there are I's and II's. I need to study up on the differences. Does anyone have a preferance? If I do this (probably from Ebay), I want to do it right. I understand the more recent models might not have a metal horn? Also, if I get Cornwalls, would the KG4's work OK as a 2ndary pair - say in a home theatre setup? Or, what would be a good 2ndary pair?
