  1. 2 mours is a paramours......wife and i have phds.. so, we are collectively a paradox? Sorry. (the kids think so anyway) But, i assume the Moondogs were your choice? I wonder how they would compare with the paramounts.... the issue here, is that making stuff is fun. Modifying it is fun, too. Aslan - Good Jim
  2. Hi Mike: www.belgaudio.com/kcmeasurements2.htm BUT: back to my original question: does anyone have imp vs. freq. data on the new Cornwall? I am (perhaps ignorantly) assuming that : 1. The crossovers are different 2. The crossovers affect the impedance curve Cheers, jim
  3. speakerfritz -- your point of view is more elegant, plenty cheap, and the right way to go. I thank you for the input and the link! jim
  4. Hi Daddy Dee: What did you replace them with, and would you comment on why? - is your logo related to a movie based on a story from our friend CS Lewis?
  5. Well, here is my quick, and perhaps not well thought out answer. If I just look at pure resistive load (ok, that is a bad assumption), and I have a speaker impedance that bottoms at 6 Ohms, and add 15 Ohm in parallel, I get a low end impedance of a little over 4 Ohms, so I use the 4 ohm tap on my output transformer and my tubes are fat and happy; everything is near and above 4 Ohms (and the whole impedance curve is 'flattened' due to the parallel resistor - the 40 Ohm peak is reduced). Would not want the 8 ohm tap since that will load the tubes at the low impedance end and we are right back where we started. I will loose a couple db, but with a mighty 6 Watts, I am willing to do that. That's why I like Cornwalls.... OK. so if I am ignorant and missed the point, GOOD. I am more than willing to get educated : ) jim
  6. Hi Mike Yup, that was my idea. If they still drop to something like 6 ohms min, that size resistor in // should flatten things out.... i think jim
  7. Hi all: Anyone know about the impedance curves for the new Cornwall III? I assume the crossovers are different?? Question comes from my experimenting with the 4 and 8 ohm taps on my PP tube amp (zero feedback, class A, ~ 6 W). I assume they still dip fairly low due to K33, so DeanG suggestion for a parallel 15 Ohm resistor would be a good idea?[8-)] thanks, jim
  8. Howdy from AZ: I built a Bottlehead Foreplay III preamp. Very pleased with that... hope to move on to some Paramounts to replace my PP tube amp. jim
  9. Michael: Right you are! Excellent results by moving them, not too far, out. Thanks, and stop by for a listen and something cold and refreshing next time you are driving by.... [] doc jim
  10. Charles: Thanks for those pictures, very helpful. They give me ideas ! Yes, perhaps I should try some home brew ICs; what's to lose? (fidelity []) jim
  11. Michael: Well, for now this is the best I can do for a close up of the wood grain, which is beautiful. Musta had too much coffee that day - 5 Mpixels of jitter. I appreciate your comment on placement. I will try that again, and increase the toe in. Problem right now is that the listening area is behind the pictured area, and the focus is fairly deep into the room. Maybe because of the curtains and half wall, there is no noticeable reflection off the wall. Sound is good and sharp and coherent. Getting the 1:1.2 listening ration (or whatever the golden ratio is) ain't happening here! Please continue with any suggestions. I am new at this and appreciate it. I'd be happy to throw a party, but the drive might be a bit long for some of you. Mesa, AZ is not too centrally located. And, it is not the epicenter for audio, sad to say. Woodog's input would indeed also be appreciated!
  12. Hi Charles Didn't get a pic of the magnet wire, which only goes to the biwired upper end (nice feature, that). I suspect some folks will be concerned that I use different wire for the lows and highs; that at the cross over frequency it will not work out. If that is true, I sure can't notice it. But a-b tests are not getting done now. I got the wire from Antique Electronics Supply. 22 Ga. Seems like good stuff. Also tried the 3$ Radio Shack variety and it works too. Maybe not as well..... I will keep in mind that you are using magnet wire for interconnects. What gauge do you use? Cheers jim
  13. Another picture, since I have not figured out how to properly add multiple pictures.
  14. Howdy everyone! Thanks for the messages. A few details: - I got the CW3s through a local, independent rep. That was a great way to go (as opposed to some 'big store' options). Support your local business. - Running the Cornwalls with a modified Carey superamp/Bottlehead Foreplay preamp. Right now I'm using triode strapped 6L6s. You read that right. The old metal cans. They started making those in 1937, and the quad I'm using (push pull, obviously) look like they are 40's vintage. Gotta like the name: RCA Radiotron. I am guessing I'm getting about 8 W per channel. I am biasing them Class A1. Was running some new issue KT88's but the detail (not bass) is far, far, better with the 6L6's. Oh, and they cost about $15 each, 'cause no one seems to like the ugly little things. Must look past the surface! [] - Still breaking in, but OH MAN, what a sound. Soundstage and depth beyond anything I have heard. - Magnet wire (22 Ga) for the upper end, 16Ga stranded cheap stuff (yes, Monster. I don't even like the name) for the bass. Lots of opportunites for upgrading. But this works, folks. - The wife loves the sound. Put in some Sarah Mclaughlin (sp?) and that took care of that. Just wants new furniture to get the room arranged right. That works for me! - The room these are in, along with the rest of the house, is pretty wierd. There is a 3 inch lowered area behind me were the rest of the living room is. Acoustically, this is one very strange place. The last picture seems to be the best we can do for placement. Wife was concerned about me removing a wall to get better acoustics. No. We won't go there. But it is very tempting. Sorry for the long post, making up for all those months that you folks provided critical info and entertainment! Cheers, doc jim "lovely day for a Guiness!"
  15. I found that many of the folks enjoying home built and modified equipment, and other real audio nuts were pretty fond of these high efficiency and rather large speakers. It was generally the snobs that had a problem with them..... will try and post some pictures next week. until then, trying magnet wire, moving speakers two mm to the left,.... no, three mm right, no, ....[] jim
  16. Greetings, all. First post here. Thanks to some pretty detailed information on Cornwalls, provided in part by a number of you, I purchased a pair. Walnut, for anyone who cares. Background - I spent months researching speakers. Abbys, Pi, etc., .... The best match, and the greatest risk, was the new Cornwall, bought without a listen or look. Then I waited. And waited. And waited........ Large? Yes. WAF issues? Yes. Worth it? Yes!! [] Thanks folks, Cheers, and happy listening doc jim Cornwall III's, Bottlehead FP III, Class A triode PP amp, Shanling CDP, etc. in the land of the AZ pair 'o docs.
