  1. Well, I just got back about 15 minutes ago. I got to the sellers home and found out that tyhey had nothing to hook them up to. They tried to get a dvd player to work, but, they couldn't get the darn thing to oprn up. The apartment looked like they were selling everything they had. My first thought was oh crap, they might be needing the money for drugs, but after talking with the couple for a few minutes I realized that wasn't the case. They are getting ready to make some new purchases and wanted to get rid of alot of their old stuff. The cabinets are in rough shape. With the worst being the tops. It looked as if someone was watering their plants right there on top of the speakers which caused some buckling of the cabinet on one. The other had the proverbial round spot where there must have been a plant there also but it had very little warping of the wood. They are black and have small nicks and chips in various places. Since I could not audition them and with the cabinets being in the shape they were, I offered $100.00. They accepted. I have just hooked them up in the bedroom with my Marantz 2275 and my Fortes and I think they sound pretty damn awesome. Being as late as it is, I did not pour the power to them. That will have to wait until tomorrow. I may be turning these over to make a couple of bucks, but, not right away. I want to enjoy them for a bit before I make that decision. I will fill you guys in on my thoughts as I listen to them a bit more. I love it when things work out well. Tom
  2. Heading out the door right now to go look at them. They say the only issue is two small holes in one of the 15" passives. I'll keep you guys posted. they are about an hour away, so yee haw here we go again! Tom
  3. Well, I have had more contact with the seller and he is willing to work with me on the MC-2105. I don't think I can get him below $300.00 and maybe looking at $350.00. Is that a reasonable price for a nonworking unit? I have seen pictures and it looks to be in great shape. I will not make any decisions until I go look at it in person though. I have checked with Terry DeWick and he said "A full audio path rebuild runs $150." With shipping and the possibility of added charges, do you think I should jump on this or wait for another to come by? I have seen the price on these vary from $500.00 to $1200.00. Not sure which way to go here. Tom
  4. Congratulations on your acqusition. They look great and I am happy to read that you are pleasantly taken with them. Your listening environment looks great, especially with the "Mac stuff." Tom
  5. Gary, thanks for the info. The seller used to own a repair shop and closed it down several years ago. He has many other items besides the McIntosh stuff. I am tempted to see if he would allow me to stop by and check out all his inventory, but, I don't know him. We have only talked on the phone. I purchased a Sansui 9090DB from a friend of his and his friend gave me his phone number. I guess it couldn't hurt to ask. Tom
  6. The only piece I have real interest in is the MC-2105, but, I don't know much about this amp and I don't know if it is worth spending $450.00 or so on something that needs repair. I wouldn't have a clue to what the problem could be. I am just worried that I could spend a bunch of money and then not be happy with it. Just because it is a McIntosh doesn't gaurantee it is what I'm after. I know it is 105w. per channel, but that is about the extent of my knowledge. I have read a few reviews, but, I am not always convinced by reviews from owners. I think they can be biased sometimes. I guess what I'm looking for is opinions from past owners of this model and how they think it stacked up against similar amps from other manufacturers and maybe a comparison to other McIntosh amps that I could pair with my C-26. Tom
  7. I have been conversing with a gentleman who has a MA-6100 that one channel is either distorted or is out. He says he doesn't quite remember since it has been on a shelf unused for over 5 years. He says he remembers using it as a preamp because it had no issues when used for just a pre. He also has a MC-2105 that goes into protect mode when trying to power on. He said it worked fine when he put it on the shelf over 5 years ago. He also has a MR-77 tuner that he says works flawlessly. The MR-77 and the MA-6100 have wood cases. He wants $1300.00 for the whole shabang. I inquired about the 2105 by itself and he said he would probably want $450.00 for it. This seems a bit high to me, since it will need repair. What do you guys think? Tom
  8. Wasn't the summer of 1967 called "The Summer of Love"? I was a little too young to partake in the activities back then, but, I do remember an almost surreal atmosphere. Starting in 1970 things became a bit of a blur for me. I remember uninhibited relationships and many, many experiments in altered consciousness. As Johnny Winter would say, " sometimes it's kind of hard to tell, but, I'm still alive and well." I think I'll pick up a copy of that Rolling Stone issue. Tom
  9. Welcome, nice score. October is not that far away. I too am waiting for some Lascala's. The only difference is, I haven't found them yet. I think I'll be waiting a little longer than October. Tom
  10. I believe Michael has put it best. I have only been around this forum for a little over a year and have read a lot of the threads,(mostly 2-channel). I have asked for help in making decisions on equipment and speakers and am very pleased with the responses I have received. I am not as familiar with audio as I believe the rest of you might be. I just know there is a "brotherhood", if you will, and a willingness to help others that have similar interests. It is touching to see that some of you have become friends, possibly, great friends, due to this medium. There is comedy, drama, and some very intelligent and artistic minds at work here. I feel very fortunate and very grateful to be able to participate on this forum and hope that one day I too may be able to meet some of you. And, yes, this can certainly turn into an obsession. Tom
  11. I own two pairs of Cornwalls and a pair of Fortes. I enjoy them all and I believe you would be happy with either of these. I don't have any experience with the Chorus. I think that if you don't mind the size of the Cornwall, that would be the way to go. They are quite a bit larger than the Forte. They also dig a bit deeper in the LF area, which I think is quite nice. They both do well with the type of music you listen to. Tom
  12. I was given some Kenwood components and have not had an opportunity to check them all out yet. I have no clue about the value or quality of these. The list:KX-69W double cassette deck KA-109 integrated stereo amplifier KT-59 quartz synthesizer am-fm tuner GE-7020 stereo graphic equalizer SS-79 surround processor The lady who gave them to me thought that they were purchased in mid to late 90's. I have been unsuccessful at finding info. on these pieces. If anyone can shed some light on this subject, I would be grateful. I would like to find manuals or specs. of some sort on these and also some impressions of these components. Maybe someone has experience with these and could let me know if they are worth keeping, selling, or, just give them away. Tom
  13. Ronnie Montrose has always been one of my all-time favorite guitarist's. From the first time I heard him on the Edgar Winter album They Only Come Out At Night. Little did I know that he had been playing on other artists albums previous to that, but this is where I took notice of him and have loved his work ever since. I may just have to pick that cd up. I have just about all of his work from the Montrose and Ronnie Montrose days. Thanks for the heads-up. Tom
  14. I think I'm going to pass and wait for a better choice of upgrade. I really want a turntable that when coupled with a medium range(price) cartridge, will give me a noticeable difference from my HK T60 and Grado setup. I think I can probably do better if I am patient. I really enjoy my HK, but, was looking to replace either my old JVC or the old Technics I bought and probably shouldn't have. Thank you all for your advice and experiences. I think you guys probably saved me some cash that I can put towards a better turntable Tom
  15. WOW! Good luck. I hope you get them. Man, I need a deal like that to come around my neighborhood. Tom
  16. I have a 2275 pushing a pair of Forte's. It seems to be a very good match. I love the old 2275, have had it for years. I, also, agree with the others, I believe you will be happy with the the combo.
  17. It is local, so I will be able to check it out. You think it looks cheap? Iknow nothing about Thorens, other than it seems to be a desirable make of tt. I'm just trying to avoid another mistake in my,(perpetual) upgrade quest. Thanks for the input, I will be looking for the issues you have mentioned, just in case it is inherent with the model.
  18. I have an opportunity to purchase a Thorens TD-165 turntable for $100.00. The sellers say that it works fine with no issues and that the cart. & stylus are in good condition. I don't know the make and model of these yet. The sellers are unavailable until after the weekend. They sent me an email telling me to contact them after the weekend. I did talk with them on the phone a few days ago, when they were asking $150.00 and they said they would get back to me if they chose to consider the $100,00 offer I made. Anyway, does anyone know anything about this particular model of Thorens? I have been wanting to upgrade for awhile. Made one purchase I should have passed on. Really wasn't an upgrade. Would like to avoid this situation if possible. I have an old JVC turntable and an old Technics. They are both not really what I am after. Any info. on the Thorens would be appreciated. I know they are highly regarded, but, I don't know if this particular model is worth the money. Please help. Tom
  19. I too, own a pair of 5.5's. They are a great sounding speaker and they look good too. I have had mine for just under a year and am very happy with them. I don't see me getting rid of them any time soon. Congrats. on your find. Tom
  20. 5.5's are great speakers. I have owned mine for only a little over a year. I enjoy them just about everyday. I would not let mine go for less than $600.00. Good luck on the sale. Tom
  21. "I am at 8 pairs of Klipsch , down from 9. I sold a pair of black KG4's. I like the look of wood grain better. I don't think I'm done yet. Still have the Lascalla's, Belle's, Klipschorn's, and now damn it, the Jub's to get." It's a good thing the Jubs were black. Bunch of potential there. A nice deep rich grained wood veneer might have put a dent in the "Rainy Day" jar. So true. "Rainy Day Jar " is recouperating at the moment.
  22. I don't have any Chorus, but I do have Forte's, and if the Chorus is anything like the Forte. The Heresy just got a wuppin'!
  23. Yes you can. You just can't tell someone what they prefer. I hear what I hear, but sometimes I prefer to hear, what I prefer to hear. Make sense? Makes sense to me, or, do I hear it make sense, or, just prefer it to make sense? I'm confused now. Tom
  24. lol, you have no idea...so how many pairs are you up to? I can think of one eccentric guy with 100 Klipsch speakers [] I am at 8 pairs of Klipsch , down from 9. I sold a pair of black KG4's. I like the look of wood grain better. I don't think I'm done yet. Still have the Lascalla's, Belle's, Klipschorn's, and now damn it, the Jub's to get.
