  1. Wouldn't you need to be a member of a clan to wear clan colours, which is what tartans are?
  2. Most gasoline-powered cars have fuel pump diaphragms and some other parts that are attacked by ethanol. The cars that are certified for use with it should not have a problem, since the affected parts in those cars are ethanol-compatible. As for the engine itself, the Indy cars, as well as speedway racing motorcycles, run on methanol, which is very similar to ethanol. It produces more power, will tolerate higher compression ratios and tends to pull more heat out of the combustion chamber, causing the engine to run cooler. However, the ideal fuel-air ratio for 100% methanol is about twice as rich as for gasoline, so fuel mileage is way worse, to the point of needing a much larger fuel tank.
  3. CDs may measure very well, but low-level information tends to be missing, since the 16-bit (15 bits for signal plus one bit for checksum) spec doesn't allow for as much dynamic range as you might expect. When CDs first came out, everyone was impressed by how quiet they were, but performance spaces are not silent. There are always some background sounds, which give you an idea of the size of the performance space, as well as the quiet sounds of the finer details of the performance itself. See if you can hear that low level of sound on a CD.
  4. Kimball, you seem to have the best of intentions, but we know very little of other forum members' personal situations. Even when you know someone on a face-to-face basis, what is practical for someone to do is best known to them and not to someone observing them. As for what you'd do in the case of suffering a life-changing injury or disease, it's impossible to say what you would do or think until it happens to you. You might pursue your dreams, find new dreams, or go in a direction you'd never thought of.
  5. You mean we can't get perfect sound with horns of finite length? But the infinite-length horns need such big amps! And an infinite number of sheets of plywood...
  6. Hopefully, you won't need to send in your machine, but $38 flat rate for any repairs sounds like a heck of a deal.
  7. I say hah! I said my system was complete at least three or four times. Now I just say this is it in its present configuration. Welcome to the forum!
  8. Cool! It would be a treat to have you hear the latest configuration of the system. I'm sure you'll like it. [Y] And maybe I'll play you some ska music. No bagpipes, more like this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=nSZ58dtzDTY
  9. I find new CDs and LPs to be pretty pricey, too, so I buy used most of the time. Luckily, we have quite a few shops here that have a big selection of used "physical media" music.
  10. That oil isn't always free anymore. There was a piece on the radio a few weeks ago about how many restaurants have contracts with companies to remove the used oil and fat, but some people are stealing it to sell, sometimes fleeing and leaving an oily trail out of the lot when they get spotted and yank out the drain hose before fleeing the scene. I should have said that He is the service for those resturants. That arrangement could work well. Some of the Internet oil conversion kits imply that you can go to any restaurant and expect them to give you all the free oil you want, so you can drive for nothing. It might have been that way for a while, but the idea has caught on and now there are quite a few people looking for that oil.
  11. You have been away for a while, Peter! I've been enjoying my JubScalas for a couple of months now. It started when I was offered a second Yamaha MX-D1 power amp, then I heard about a pair of slightly-used 510 horns with K69 drivers (the small Jubilee tweeter combo, as opposed to the big 402 horns). When I found a used EV Dx38 processor on the Net, I realized I could put it all together. The relevant thread starts here: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/100243.aspx?PageIndex=1 And there are pictures on pages 15 and 16: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/100243.aspx?PageIndex=15 http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/100243.aspx?PageIndex=16 One Jubilee owner described my JubScalas as 90% of the sound of Jubilees at 30% of the price. I haven't had the opportunity to hear a pair of Jubilees, but I think he's not far off. Actually, when you add in the electronics, the gap closes a bit, but if I buy a pair of Jubilees now, I just have to hook them up, since everything else is already in place. As for the sound, it's all that was promised and more. Using the Dx38 instead of passive crossovers allows for a smoother frequency response, even in the La Scala bass bin, plus the 40 years newer tweeter design provides new levels of clarity and soundstaging. The Dx38 also allows the tweeters and woofers to be time-aligned, which makes for a tighter and more realistic sound. The Heresy II center and surrounds provided a reference, in that the La Scalas sounded better than the Heresy IIs, but the JubScalas sound much better again. I could go on, but you can see I'm pretty pleased with the results, even if it took longer than I expected to get them operational.
  12. The pre-amp would go before the T-amps. It brings the signal voltage up to a level the amps can work with.
  13. Don't worry. As my dad used to say, "You can't drown a man who's born to be hanged."
  14. That oil isn't always free anymore. 15. Acoustically perforated powered screen? That sounds like the ideal way to go, assuming it's practical for your situation. No worries about what size the speakers are, just good sound coming through/from the screen.
  16. So, Bill, how do you like your SL-P1200s? Do they sound as good as the latest CD spinners?
  17. Is this new format the MVI (Music Video Interactive)? They're a new type of DVD, but I'm not sure how they differ from regular DVDs or DVD-A discs. The Donald Fagen Nightfly Trilogy box set contains 3 MVIs plus 3 "bonus" CDs with the same music on them, plus an extra stereo CD. The MVIs are playable on a DVD player or computer and are in Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 stereo and the sound is noticeably better than the CDs. The first MVI (The Nightfly) is in Advanced Resolution PCM Stereo (48kHz/24-bit), while Kamakiriad and Morph the Cat are in Advanced Resolution PCM Stereo (96kHz/24-bit). It's starting to look like universal players are the way to go, but maybe they need to have 2 DACs, one optimized for 44.1kHz and its multiples and one optimized for 48kHz and its multiples, to avoid the compromises caused by the extra processing needed to go from one to the other. If you're familiar with the Neil Young Live at Massey Hall 1971 CD/DVD package, you'll know the DVD sounds much, much, better than the CD.
  18. The Heresy II is a fine speaker by itself, but the La Scala is a step above it. With Klipschorns, the difference is probably even more evident. If it's practical to go with the LS center, that seems like the best choice, short of a Klipschorn with a false corner, but that would be too tall, even if you had a spare one to try. []
  19. Isn't the high velocity area at the throat of the horn, where it meets the compression driver? The large size of the horn's front opening would result in very low airspeed combined with large volume, wouldn't it?
  20. Thanks for the tips, Tom, but I don't have a tone generator. Resetting the treble delay to 2.06ms/28"/71cm, based on tape measure figures, seemed to dial in the sound nicely and I like what I'm hearing. The crossover frequency with the JubScalas is around 445Hz.
  21. The obvious solution would be to use a degreasing liquid. Trichloethylene and perchloethylene are carcinogenic and are rarely used nowadays, but the citrus-based degreasers work well and smell nice and orangey. You could also try some TSP, or trisodium phosphate. It's easy to find and works well.
  22. We're a little behind up here, but I saw Iron Man last week and thought it was pretty good. Robert Downey, Jr did a great job and Gwyneth Paltrow was perfect in her part.
  23. I'm not clear on the concept of acoustic center. Is that the spot in the air where the sound actually forms? How can it be behind the cone?
  24. I haven't had the pleasure of hearing E. Power Biggs play, but I think Vanessa Mae's version of Toccatta and Fugue would be more interesting to watch, while also sounding good.
  25. I figured the total sound path was around 35 1/2", but just wanted to know if I was overlooking anything. Since I'm not sure of the distance from the doghouse slot to the dust cover and I can't see into there, I didn't want to go poking blindly around the woofer with a tape or a ruler. I assumed the distance from the speaker's mounting surface to the dust cap would be about 3 1/2". The sound path of the 510 horn/K69 driver combo is about 6", added to its present 1 1/2" backset from the front of the bass bin, for a total difference of 28". Earlier, I'd somehow come up with a 35" difference. When I convert that to milliseconds, that was 2.63 milliseconds of treble delay, whereas the 28" setting gives 2.06 milliseconds. When I listened for a difference a few minutes ago, there may have been a subtle improvement, but it's not obvious. That's okay, a few barely-audible subtleties add up to a noticeable improvement. The Dx38 allows for a degree of precision in settings that really appeals to me. Thanks, John.
