  1. i'm a movies only guy. i don't listen to music on the system at all. just I Heart Radio in the car...lol i guess i never looked at the physical footprint of the epics. they looked like standard towers. i did contact Bob Crites and he has several upgraded for the KG5.5's, but not Epics. for movies i know that center is very important, but for some reason when i switch to Stereo it sounds just as good. i know, it probably shouldn't be like that and i may have something out of wack.
  2. ^^^ he said it right. can and will you hear a difference if you bi-wire or bi-amp...Yes, is it the best "upgrade" you can do...No. i've done it, both with an AVR (Onkyo 805 to be specific) and a true amp (Emotiva LPA-1 & XPA-3). to me, as a picky critical listener i am, the only thing i actually heard was it was a touch "louder". keep this in mind, i'm the say guy who has all custom made cables (all of them) and can hear the differences between gold, silver, platinum, etc... the biggest issue with a bi-wire (worse choice) and bi-amp is the amount of money you will spend in speaker wire. to truly squeeze ever ounce of that minor "upgrade" you do need some "good" wire. i'm not talking $50 a foot wire either, just not pure junk. the Monoprice will work, but really the stuff you can get for $5 a foot will give you the most out of it. that's why i say it's not the best upgrade you can do. the amount of money you will spend in wire a lone, you can either buy a better receiver or amp. if you were to pair your Onkyo with an Emotiva amp for $300-$400, that "upgrade" would be significant. (i know, i've done it!). "wire and cables" should be the LAST upgrade you do. spend the most on speakers, speaker upgrades, like crossovers, then amps, then receivers. after all that is done, and your Sub makes your heart sing (those suckers can be $2K+), then worry about cabling. this is coming from a guy who is a major Cable Guy! (insert clips now...lol) heck, if you like i'll ship you out a BOX of custom made cables that you can play with. when you are done, ship them back. it's really a pain to do that though. lots of plugging and unplugging, takes ALL day! you have to really want to do that! lol!
  3. hey there my fellow K-Heads! i have a pair (well 3.1) of RF7's and RC-7 HT set up. i don't plan on changing the amp (Emotiva XPA-3) or the processor (UMC-1) anytime soon. i also have a sub i really like (Bob Carver True Sig 12" - the one with the actual signature) and have no issues or wants in the down low dept. And as many of you know, my set up is heavily modded. i've always been interested in the 3-Way design, but recently found out that it's a good design but comes with it's issues and headaches. what ever i do choose to jump to, i'll want to at a minimum update or upgrade the crossover, but would be interested to know if i can upgrade the drivers, woofers, or horn. i really like what i have, i am just curious what else is out there that has the potential to be "better". someone suggested the KG5.5, and those look or seem like they would work really well. i've always liked the Epics (never heard them) and how they look. i don't want anything that has too large of a footprint. i'm not interested in Herseys, or anything that size. i do like front ports, because i don't have a HT room so they need to fit in my living room. has anyone modded or messed with either of those 2 speakers or has a better suggestion? i'm pretty sure if i do change, i'll change to a 2.1 and drop the center. that is unless there is some super secret awesome center for those older models. i would love to have the RC64 (any version) but it won't look good on my custom made ET center and i'm not changing that either! lol! and to be clear, i like the LOOK of the RC64, i've never heard it. the hardest part will be selling the current speakers. i won't be able to do a thing if i still have them. so once i decide, there is no going back. what ever i end up with, if i'm not happy, then i'm stuck with them. i doubt i'll find someone who wants some 7's so modded because i made them match each other, so they need to go as a set. in fact, even the rears (which are boxed) are matched to the front 3. that's why they are still in a box and not sold! i guess i kind of screwed myself! lol! anyways, information and suggestions are greatly appreciated!
  4. i personally never say "more speakers the better". i rock a 3.1 and am just fine with it. Youth is right though, the center and mains need to be closer in height. so even if you mind a magical center that fits and timber matches, the height distance will ruin your sound stage. really, i'd just leave it be.
  5. i haven't noticed a difference between Blue jeans vs monoprice vs custom made. where i do notice a difference, is custom made XLR (but it's still not "night and day). i even have a 50' RCA sub cable from monoprice and it will sound the same as a 10'. oh, also upgraded power cords do nothing as well. the only thing that makes the "big" difference is running a 2 male 1 female splitter ($0.65 @ monoprice) and connecting your LFE and Right RCA ports on the sub.

    New TV

sorry, i didn't read all the responses, but i wouldn't buy any tv right now. i'm in your same boat, i really want one, but the new 4K blu-ray player are coming out and there is a hardware change to be able to accept the 4K. i read only a few different write ups, but they "believe" our current HDMI size and shape connections will be the same, but a new HDMI might need to be made. i think the ones at monoprice should be good, but no one really "Knows." in the article it said most 4K tvs out now, can't and won't handle the new 4K players. it has to do with the new format is going to 4K/60htz. i forgot which tv, i think the latest samsung, can handle the new players but samsung will sell you a "upgrade kit" to hook to your tv. i think LG said they will send a technician to your house and upgrade it on the spot. anyways, that's my 2 cent's good luck with your TV search!
  7. Scrappy, i saw those speakers and this is what i immediately thought of!
  8. i guess this entire topic is now dead. i just pulled my head out of the sand and realized 4K blu-ray players are coming out this year. i was going to buy a 4K TV but the articles say some 2015 TV's won't be able to support the 60FPS of the new format. can't wait to see how much the first Oppo 4K blu-ray player will be! lmao! i contacted Emotiva and asked about UMC-1 upgrade support, but i'm sure the answer will be, "buy a XMC-1"! lol! good thing i still have that 40% discount card!
  9. ah....thanks Scrappy! i won't let you down! lol!
  10. i may be the ONLY one who will say this. the RS-42's will "keep up" like the RS-62's will. why you ask...because when you set them up with an SPL meter, they will produce the same db as the other speakers. i have RS-42's paired with RF-7 set up and yes, they were perfect. oh, i did a crossover mod, that made a huge difference! super clear!
  11. my 2 cents is this, which one will fit better? do you already have shelves on the front stage or is it a blank wall where you would need to either mount to buy/make a speaker stand? you can upgrade the crossover on both so that's a wash..... unless you are putting them in a true HT room with acoustic built walls, it will be hard to hear the difference. good luck with the decision (oh side note...picking up/ moving the RB-75's are easier than the RF-5's, just say'n...)
  12. ok, ok, ok, guys....i get it...i should have really paid attention to the date stamp. i obviously overlooked that. i just got excited that there was a 103 "for sale".
  13. to revisit this topic.... so part of the reason i wanted a new blu-ray player was my PS3 would sometimes not play certain blu-rays. this drove me nuts! well, a quick google search sent me the fix. a file is corrupted and you go through the steps to reset it. it's now fixed, but i'm still a little torn.... believe it or not, the wife gave me the go ahead to buy a PS4. I know! i know! i should stop here but i'm just not that excited about it. she then tells me to get an Xbox One, I know I know! i should REALLY stop there. the issue with that, there are specific games on the ps4 i'd rather play, but i don't care that much. i already know the PS4 missed the mark for a blu-ray player, not too sure how the Xbox One "sounds" so, i'm still thinking of getting an Oppo. when i look at the spec of the 83, i don't see 4K upscaling. the 101ci seems like a smart choice. i won't need the apps because the next TV i buy will have that. the 103 has the better processor. i think if i can find a deal on a 103 i'll get that. i honestly don't play games at all. i'm about to put my Wii up for sale. it was nice to have. we played it, but we go very long periods of time not playing it.
  14. yeah, i get you. it's what the acoustic guy told me. u just can't put a panel or some batt insulation and u are done. you have to build the wall a specific way. i'm just hoping a few acoustic panels will "help" limit a small amount of sound. this is why i want to keep it cheap. i can pay a few hundred and he will install the R7 insulation. i'm hoping if i can get a good quote on blown in batt, it will be "better" and maybe a touch cheaper. and i won't have to cut a 2' section across my wall out.
  15. do you mean of how my ET looks now? if so, now way! it doesn't look good! it's close thought. getting the Monoprice HDMI non active cables did help! i promise though, once it gets done, i'll post a ton of pics!
  16. seeking advice of people who actually built their own acoustic panels. i did a lot of research and found all the different materials and a few different build techniques. what i'm trying to find out is what materials actually seemed to work the best from those who build different ones. i'm looking to build 3 panels to go around my TV then maybe some smaller ones at the very top of the wall. i'm really just trying to stop some sound from transferring between the living room wall and the back bedroom. i've already looked into sound proofing that wall, it's just not cost effective. i had the batt sound proofing in my old home, and it really did nothing. my last resort is to fill the walls with blown in insulation. i did have a guy who specialized in acoustic wall treatment and just due to where the wall is, whats around it, and what we would have to do, it will get to $5K in a heart beat. (that is if i want to actually sound proof it). the cloth material covering the sound proofing won't be a simple black. i'll want to have something that is WAF and possibly match our decor. it would be awesome if there were some Star Wars material that will work with acoustic panels! my wife would go crazy if i can make some R2D2 panels! i know i can spend $600 for a few panels and they can print that, but i'm way to cheap for that! thanks for any help!
  17. oh, i know this is a bit old, but i figured out a really cheap and easy way to use zip ties. that is assuming you want to use zip ties. so in my pictures you see the white "ladders" i cut down to only have 2 positions. well, instead of those, you can staple each zip tie in a row. i did it with my staple gun (test piece of wood) and if you set the staple gun right, it won't pinch the ties down. that way you can zip the wires down, but not have to remove the staple if you need to cut that tie. oh, my staple gun was bought at Harbor Freight (for reference). i would put a staple every 3" apart, that way the weight is shared more and the staples won't be stressed as much. anyways, just something i was messing around with. my ET center is half done now, waiting on the new TV to be purchased and mounted before i can actually fully finish the job. oh, maybe an Oppo player if i can convince myself to buy one!
  18. you double the db gain when you use both the L/R inputs. using 1 input you only get 3db. i personally use the 2 male 1 female adapter from monoprice, i had to save up for it because it cost .65! lol! so far, from what i have seen from klipsch subs, they utilize the duel inputs this way. my current sub (Sunfire True 12") does not. easiest way to know if your sub does or does not, use a standard adapter (like the one i just mentioned) and if it fits, that sub will benefit from it. if you don't believe me, hook it up, use 1 input, listen, then hook up both, listen.

    RC-7

i have a very small wrinkle that appeared magically. there has been no noticed change in sound. someone just posted they are looking for a RC7 and another mentioned a fair price is $300 and the guy said he was good with that.
  21. not sure what your pocket book would think, but i would just go all HD wireless then. trying to "patch" 2 different technologies won't lead to "perfect" results. i personally ditched my rear 4's when i moved into my open floor plan.
  22. might get banished for this, but i "like" the original 7's, but prefer the look of the 7II. the black dust cap takes from the look (to me, just to me). i was (for a while) trying to swap out my RC7 for a RC64, but it just won't work. i modified my center to match my mains so it won't be a good match for anyone else. i just really like the look of the RC64. if you go original RF7, with original RC64, and then do a crossover mod and have all matching caps (based on your personal taste) you should get a good sound stage. but then you would have black dust caps and non black dust caps.
  23. ^^^ what he said.... everything goes to the receiver...then 1 HDMI out to the TV. in my case, i have 1 hdmi from cable box to TV, then all my other gear runs through the processor, and 1 hdmi out to the tv. this way i don't have to have my processor/amp/what ever on to watch normal cable TV. if you want Red Mere (or Active) cables, you can't use them to go through anything. so in my specific case, only the hdmi from the cable to the tv can be a Red Mere (or Active) in your processor settings, you will want to turn off "hdmi audio out" because the audio will not play through the processor, but output to the TV. (at least some will, some won't.)
  24. From the album: 3.1

RF-7's, RC-7, UMC-1, XPA-3, SUNFIRE TRUE BOB CARVER SIGNATURE 12" SUB, FURMAN 20PFI, PS3, WII, CUSTOM MADE ET CENTER, ALL CUSTOM CABLES. this is my new 3.1 set up. i moved into this new "open floor plan" home and have no way of adding any surrounds. sure, i could place one in non-optimum positions, but that won't mean i'll get a turn "surround" sound. i'll get 5-7 speakers that make noise! before the comments roll in, yes, there is a plan to "upgrade" the 42" TV to something nicer. it's been 6 months, so isn't it time to upgrade your tv? lmao! i had this TV when i moved into a very small duplex and 42" was (literally) the biggest TV that would fit. any bigger, the front door would smack the edge. i'm thinking of 60"+. i have pics on here with a smaller living room wall (7.1 set up) and a 50" TV, and that even looks a little small.
