  1. Hmmm...I know Krell makes great pre/power amps, and their processors are supposed to be decent, but I'm not so sure about their sub. If you want an insane sub(s) to go with the enigma series, then go with Hsu Research's HRIBR. It consists of 32 18" drivers housed in 16 separate 15"x18"x20" pieces. Anechoic frequency response is 10-100 Hz, +/- 1dB. Total cost, a mere $80,000. Always wanted to see a pic of this thing, but have yet to find one. -snap-
  2. A track that I think really hits some low notes, is the theme from The Shawshank Redemption. Nice clean bass. -snap-
  3. YES!! That's the one. Thanks. I was checking out the Genesis (www.gen-tech.com) 1.1's today, and thought about the Grand Enigma system. Wouldn't mind having the Genesis 1.1's, but finding a room to keep them in would be a problem. Anyway, thanks ViV for the link. -snap-
  4. Damn, oh well. Maybe somebody else has the link. -snap-
  5. This is really off topic, but some time ago, somebody posted a picture of an insane set of speakers, that were basically unattainable for the majority of the world's population. I've looked back over the history of this forum, but apparently the earlier posts have been removed. In any case, is there a chance anybody has that picture saved? -snap-
  6. quote: I just wonder some times how does Paradigm make there speakers sound so good at such a low price? From what I understand, the key to making their speakers so affordable is the fact that they have one of the, if not the largest r&d facility up in Canada. This facility is shared with PSB (another great speaker manufacturer), so that probably cuts their r&d costs in half. I also believe they don't jack up their prices like other manufacturers who do so because of their exclusive name. In any case, I've done listening tests on their reference studio series, and have settled on the 100's as the speakers to buy when I settle down. -snap-
  7. Btw, just read Distec's post, and I totally agree with what he's said. From what I read on this board, it seems like 90% of the people who post here have no idea of what real hifi audio is all about. The pros are probably their first speakers that are somewhat decent, and thus results in the exaggerated claims given to these speakers. The bottom line is these are $250 multimedia speakers with a line source coming from a computer soundcard. This, in no way, represents an ideal situation in terms of creating the best sound possible. Anyway, that's my 2 cents. -snap-
  8. Swerv: Why bother replacing the front sats with the Paradigm's? The way you have your setup now, the fronts and rears are perfectly matched (in terms of timber matching and what not), adding the Paradigms would throw everything out of wack, especially given the fact that you need to buy a separate amp for the Atom/Titans. Keep the Pros for your computer speakers and buy a whole new setup for music/home theater. Just my opinion. -snap-
  9. I'm not familiar with the KG-1 speakers, but something that can handle a Carver amp should damn well be a whole hell of a lot better than the Klipsch Promedia speakers. Anyway, as for your problem, just a random suggestion, but have you checked all the wire connections to/from the sub? -snap-
  10. My point wasn't that soldering audio equipment is a pain in the ***. It was that when soldering audio equipment you have to make sure that you use the right type of solder, the wires (if you are using any) are the right kind, audio equipment is especially sensitive to all sorts of externalities, and by adding components in close proximity to the existing crossover could introduce noise into your system. In other words, there are a lot of places where things can go wrong, and you can end up degrading the overall performance of your speakers rather than increasing. Just something for you to think about and to help you to see if it the added benefits of a new crossover would be worth the risk involved. Anyway, good luck if you do decide to upgrade the crossover. -snap-
  11. Try muting all unnecessary inputs/outputs on your soundcard (do it through the Control Panel --> Sounds/Multimedia...that is if I'm not mistaken). -snap-
  12. Just on a side note, when building your own audio equipment, especially with respect to amps and crossovers, you need to be skilled in soldering as it is very easy to degrade the signal through cold solder joints or other such problems. That's just something you might want to think about before you think about screwing around with the crossover network. -snap-
  13. If you want a suggestion for some great speakers, that offer very good sound along with some very good value for money, look no further than Paradigm and the Paradigm Reference speakers. But, as you should know, don't take anybody's word for audio component until you've heard it yourself. My personal feeling is that if they're looking for a real home theater setup, and they're supposedly "entertainmentphiles" than one, they wouldn't be looking at Bose, and two, the Pros are not at all a good idea, as they only offer a 4.1 solution versus a true 5.1 solution needed with a real home theater setup. -snap-
  14. As for finding out the specs of the Bose system (freq. response, and what not), I seriously doubt you'll be able to find it. I was bored one day, and went into a Bose store and the salesman said that Bose does not give out those specs because they don't matter, it's what a person hears that matters. You've got to wonder why a company would refuse to give out basic specs such as frequency response that are so critical in judging a speaker's performance quantitatively. Basically, and I might be biased, but my dad used to represent Bose back in the 70's, but I think Bose sucks, value for money isn't there, and total acoustic performance is lacking. But then again, that's my opinion. -snap-
  15. k27-R: Those Acoustic Energy's are a 2.1 system, and correct me if I'm wrong, but they don't have a 4.1 system out yet. Are there any reviews of the Acoustic Energy speakers around? -snap-
  16. A number of sites use the same board as Klipsch. It's called the Ultimate Bulletin Board and can be found at www.ultimatebb.com. I used to help them out with tech support on their site, but that was back in the days of version 4 of the board, and now I believe they are up to version 6. Anyway, if you have any questions regarding this board, feel free to contact me at: snapgt@email.com. Have a good one. -snap-
  17. If you use the Aux in jack on the Cp-1, it will only use the front speakers. Thus, the CP-1 is not required. If you decided to use your TV, and used the headphone jack as fawwaz suggested, you'd end up with only the front speakers being used, unless you used a Y-splitter. Then again, if you're investing in a new TV and a dvd player, why don't you just invest in a real receiver and a decent 5.1 system? -snap-
  18. Can somebody tell me if the 4.1s are available anywhere online? I've checked soundcity.com and they said that they'll be getting them early April. Thanks. -snap-
  19. Value for money wise, I think you can't beat the Riovolt. A friend of mine bought one and I was quite impressed with it, although it is a little bulky compared to my discman, but from my understanding that is to be expected with mp3 cd players. Most of the other mp3 cd players that are cheaper than the Riovolt lack a good LCD display, and that is a feature that I would assume one would want. Anyway, just research the facts for yourself on the web and base your decision on that. -snap-
  20. When you say "rip" I'm taking you mean convert CD-audio to mp3. Given this, make sure you are not using the 98 version of your software. If a win2k version is not available, then use the NT version of that software. Just a suggestion. -snap-
  21. I can't resist, so I'll go ahead and say it. Those lines (aka. damper wires) do not affect design guys as you claim Mike. I sit in front of a computer for at least 8 hours in a day doing either analog or FPGA circuit design and I really don't notice the damper wires. So for that, your claim is false. I believe the score would be 2 - 1 in favor of Sony now. Oh and don't try to say that the lines I use are not thin. Anyway, back to the books. -snap-
  22. Mike: that's one big claim you're making by saying that Sony monitors (the company known for their great TVs and other electronics) are "crap." In all the CompE labs at Tech, we use 21" Viewsonic or Sony monitors and I would have to say that the Sony FD Trinitron monitor has, by far, a much better picture than does the Viewsonic. But hey, everybody is entitled to their own opinion. I just believe it is wrong to completely diss a product that has as fine a reputation as Sony. -snap-
  23. I wonder if those speakers that are being sold are really the 4.1s. I called the yahoo store place up and they said that as far as they know, they're the latest 4.1 speaker system from Klipsch (not the v.2-400). I wish Klipsch would inform us as to whether or not these places are selling the real thing, and if so, why is Klipsch claiming that we can only buy them from Klipsch's online store? Some additional information from a representative of Klipsch would be most helpful. -snap-
  24. Granted, I haven't been waiting as long as Paragon, but damn, I just don't have patience like he's got. So, Amy, can you at least give me a rough date when I can expect the 4.1's so that I can put a note on my calendar and start the countdown?? -snap-
  25. This issue has been addressed a number of times on this bb. Do a search for "hiss" or something to that effect and you should get the information you are looking for. -snap-
