  1. Add another thumbs-up for the Khorns from this listener. I first heard a pair of Khorns in 1983. I was amazed. Lack of funds prevented purchase at that time. Then along comes Ebay and in 1999 I picked up a pair. I was a bit anxious, especially after paying a LARGE sum of money to ship them 1500 miles. Well, within moments after hooking them up all my worries were over. Just as I remembered. Dynamic, clear, alive and musical. We had to take them apart (HF section and LF section) to get them into the house, but the money, effort and sweat were all worth it. Good luck with whatever you decide. By the way, as mentioned by Gil, if you get them and don't like them they are in demand. Especially with the apparent delays in orders being filled for the Heritage Series as discussed in other threads. Jim
  2. Doc, The speakers couldn't have been sold off Ebay---the auctions says it was ended early because "the item was lost or broken". Frequently a pair of Belle Klipsch speakers are lost, I mean, look at the small size. That has never happened to you?? Huh, hard to believe!! Enjoy the Music...Jim
  3. Malcolm, I removed the reconed K-22 tonight and the cone definitely looks different. No screen on the whizzer cone. The surround is black. I sent dig.photos to shop to help the repair person determine route to take with repairs. I appreciate your recommendations regarding making the drivers the same. After viewing the current and completed auctions on Ebay for Heresy speakers, I am inclined to agree with you about a good value, even with the bad woofer. I'm fortunate enough to have another pair of Heresy speakers that need cabinet repairs. Multiple corners are damaged on both. They are raw birch. Know a co-worker that enjoys woodworking. Said he would show me the ropes on veneering. May not be original, but I have some beautiful birdseye maple veneer that was purchased just for these speakers. Gonna give it a try. Plan on putting maple moldings on the front edges. Thanks for help with the H's. Jim
  4. Hi Malcolm, The speaker with the red surround is the one that's bad. The other woofer sounds good. I haven't inspected the working unit. Due to my lack of knowledge I assumed the driver with the red surround was the one that was reconed. From your info I guessed incorrectly. The driver that is bad didn't have any cosmetic damage or apparent damage from shipping, so you may well be correct in your belief that the driver was overheated in it's past life. Due to the sensitivity of the Klipsch speakers I'm sure I won't be testing the power handling when everything is back together. There's plenty of presence in my listening room at lower power levels. At 5 watts these speakers fill the room. That's enough for most of my listening. No time now, but regarding the refinishing I hope to have lots of time this winter and will take plenty of time working on them. Any advice on cleaning the grills without weakening/fading them? Thanks..Enjoy the Music...Jim
  5. Malcolm, Thanks for the info. The woofer has been shipped out-of-state to a shop I've done business with before. They did a beautiful job reconing a JBL 2220A. Looked new when done and sounded great too. Waiting to hear back so I can decide what to do next. Regarding replacement of the woofer with a later model, do you have the details regarding the mods for the crossover, or are the changes simply duplicating the later Heresy networks? In one of the other posts I made regarding the H's (different thread)it was mentioned the change in sound character may not retain the original voicing. Looking for any advice. Again, if the shop can fix the woofer that's the route I intend to go, but.......Thanks, Jim
  6. Hi Fellow Klipsch Fans, Unfortunately it appears one of the SP12's was injured during transportation. You may have seen one of my posts in the Troubleshooting section inquiring about repairs. It's definitely rubbing or that's my best guess. Lots of buzzing and fuzziness, especially with bass heavy music. Other than that, and the stains are worse in real-life than the photos, the speakers are neat. Cabinets solid. The tweeters and squawkers are clear and crisp. I hope the repair shop can help me. Hope to refinish the cabinets when the cold weather arrives. All the information is appreciated regarding this model. Enjoy the Music....jim
  7. Hi Steve P and fec, Thanks for the input. Earlier this evening I did indeed contact a reputable speaker repair shop that I have worked with before. I am planning on having the EV driver repaired/overhauled. Steve, how are those Khorns? I think the last time I posted I put my foot in my mouth regarding installation of material that you were considering to improve the bass cabinet performance. A couple of others set the issue straight. Been away from the BBS for awhile. An aquaintance helped me put together a pair of Altecs. It's been fun. I still have the '77 Khorns and they look and sound nice in my "listening room". The H's are neat, too bad one woofer appears to have been damaged during shipment. The packing was the best I've seen, but maybe the box was dropped and the jarring has shifted or deformed the woofer internals. Oh well, that's the risk you take when items are shipped. Glad Khorns survived their 1500 trip much better. Enjoy the Music....Jim
  8. fec, I wonder if the K22-ef is close to the K22 in the H I'm having trouble with. Do you have a price in mind for the K22-ef? Maybe it would at least let me enjoy the speakers with this change for now and I could worry about originality later. What do you think?? Enjoy the Music.....
  9. Hi Dan and Jim, Thanks for the information. I found a link on the web and it appears the woofer is an EV SP-12. In response to your question Marty, yes it has a whizzer cone with a screen in the middle. I thought the speakers may be approaching 40 years old and it sounds like that is the case. Is it possible the fuzziness and distortion is from rubbing? If so, is it fairly easy to disassemble the woofer to inspect and clean internals? All input appreciated. Enjoy the Music....jim
  10. Hi fec, Yeh, them's the ones. They aren't too pretty as-is. The staining is worse in real life. They are solid, though, and with some elbow grease I think they have a lot of potential. I'm hoping the repair or fix for the woofer won't cost an arm and two legs. Maybe will have to look for a replacement Heresy woofer. Take care, jim
  11. Hello, It's been awhile since I've visited. Recently purchased a pair of Model H speakers. They are somewhat similar to Heresy but the cabinet appears to be shallower. My problem is the woofer in one of the speakers. At low volume levels the woofer buzzes and sounds very fuzzy especially with bass heavy music. It sounds somewhat better when the volume is cranked up a bit, but never sounds crisp and tight. The shipping/packing job was outstanding and I found no loose items in the cabinet. The other piece of info I have is that the woofer was reconed at some point in its previous history. The seller mentioned use of EV part(s) for repairs. Any information on the Model H is also appreciated. Thanks in advance. Jim
  12. Okay DL, Since we're coming clean, I bought an LXI series receiver around 1980 with 3-way speakers (maybe Fisher?). I kept checking the speakers with a flashlight to see if there was really a tweeter in there somewhere! And distortion--oooooeeeee. Was that a low note or did someone step on a rubber bag? This is painful.....recalling these memories......Jim
