The gentleman that gifted these to me is my best friends dad - he is in his mid 90s and has significant memory issues. He barely remembers anything but remembers getting the 7T years after the model 2’s but doesn’t remember what he had originally hooked up with them. He vividly remembered me complimenting the amp setup when I first met him at their house near Boston back in 1990’s when I was in college and he remembered it well enough that when they were cleaning out his condo and moving him to assisted living it was literally one of a handful of items he had any care for where ended up - he remembered showing me and my reaction to them and wanted someone that knew how special they were to him to have them. Incredible gift - he also gifted me a set of “Hartley” loudspeakers that he had set up with them decades ago. Given the value of these I have offered multiple times to the family to help sell the pieces and give the funds for his ongoing care but they won’t hear of it. Blessed to have such wonderful and generous friends.

I will eventually gladly give away my cherished possessions to any people or persons who love my stuff as much as I do ( or did, lol).

  2. Don't think I ever heard a bad 6bq5/EL-84 amp.I have an old Fisher console amp I borrowed the outputs from and built  two Simple push pull Tubelab amps, one with Fisher outputs and one with  Olson integrated amp output transformers. The Fisher Output transformer triode amp is very engaging.

  3. I hear details I have never heard before with any other speaker (76 lascala) air, sound stage width, depth, holey crap! Example, just listening to "Ain't superstitious" by Jeff Beck. Never knew how great that recording was. This with a rather modest Tubelab 6BQ-5 Simple push pull amp in triode mode, and  with an old Polk Audio sub.

  4. I have a VTA driver board bought 1.5 yrs ago in order to rebuild an old rusty st70. I used the 12AU7 version, as I have a hundred of them laying around in some iteration. Very listenable amp.My wife initially bought the amp at a yard sale for 10 bucks or so with all original output tubes (proud of her, I wasn't even with her!). It sat for 20 yrs or so until I rebuilt it, Just felt I had to do something constructive with it, painted the chassis hammertone bronze. rewired of course.Really not an unpleasant sounding amp by any means. No idea if it distorts unpleasantly at 10 watts or so,as with LaScala's 10 watts will drive you out of the room. I think as a push-pull amp it sounds just fine.

I am at the opposite of KT88 when it comes to tone controls. Have not had or used in a decade or more. It takes a lot of effort adjusting your speakers to your room but when done correctly tone controls are just another form of signal manipulation. More components in the audio signal path. It does take a lot of effort, time and expense to conform your room to your speakers. I am the camp of less is better. I have multiple amplifiers and preamps. None with tone controls. The one I use the most is a simple buffer with no amplification. The Nelson Pass B1v2.

Pass B-1 does sound good, sounds delicious loud. Surprisingly, reminds me of the FET-10 phono preamp I had years ago.Who designed the Fet-10? Yeah Nelson Pass.

Larger amplifiers ate necessarily about Loudits more about reserve power and bass control

I runn 200wpc for this reason

Never get about several wattsbutits the peaks. !!

Reminds me of a pair of push-pull 2A3 amps I built. The guy who designed them (Henry Kuck) demonstrated to me 150watt peaks on these amps.Hope you're well Henry! Yes, they still exist!

  7. If the chassis is unmolested, the transformers are good and the price is right, its a worthy investment.I don't recall ever being enamored of the sound but never heard a Citation II in a really good system either.Highly renowned for the output transformers, wish I had a pair of them to fool with.

Out of all the replies to this thread, what Tom1066 said rings truest to "me",  about Crooner's ( seemingly experienced ) 8B updating approach.

I feel, one should not try to change " all the caps" or " all the resistors",  as SOP - standard operating procedure,  because it changes the SOUND of the stock amplifier.

    However :

One can MEASURE, individually, methodically, all the caps, as to their uF value, and measure each cap as to their ESR , and determine if ANY are way out of spec, and needing attention.

Likewise, one can easily MEASURE, individually, methodically, all the resistors, to see if they drifted, and vary greatly from their intended ( schematic ) values.

    - - - - - - - - - - -

There MAY possibly be no parts that are GROSSLY out-of-spec.  This might take up to 3 hours of time / labor to do and carefully document these measurements in 2019, VS this piece being around and unchanged, virgin,  since about 1959 ... six decades !!

    - - - - - - - - - - -

I am sure I personally could  easily improve upon the sound of this amp, by using well-thought-out new film caps, and highest-quality resistors.

But then, it is no longer a Marantz 8B one is listening to.  That's the RUB !!!!

Have fun, but think twice, before acting.  Its up to the Original Poster.   This is just little-ole-me's " two cents " worth of thoughts.

Well, you are not wrong with any of it!

I wonder if they let Bob Carver proof that description before they published it.....I think there are a bunch of lofty claims here that are a bit......questionable, IMHO.  It looks nice though....

    Lofty claims sounds like Bob.

  10. Forgot to mention you may get a crapload of B+ from the transformer that was probably rated for 115 volts. Maybe too high a DC voltage for the Tubelab simple pushpull 6BQ5 tubes, which I think require about 320volts.You can (carefully) disconnect the secondary wires and see how many volts it runs at.Probably will be impressively high, unloaded, may not even sag much with a good load on it!

  11. Good start of a stereo amp.Nice heavy power transformer, choke, at least one of the 2 salvageable  chassis.Find another similar output or buy a pair of Edcor Push pull output transformers. You could go to the Tubelab website and buy a  Simple pushpull (SPP) circuit board.(4) 6BQ5/EL84 and (2) 12at7. You won't be disappointed.Wiring not that unusual of a mess. Most peoples point to point wiring is messy.Don't risk the transformers and yourself by electrifying those old capacitors.

Congrats :D Looks like a great job! Build an ST-70 about a year ago and was pretty pleased with it.  Haha; but went back to higher powered SS amps :D

How about a low powered class A amp? Try a JLH 1969 10 watt per channel, or one of its variations. It sounds much more powerful than 10 watts and is a wonderful sounding ,simple amplifier.

Too stinking hot for coffee but I'm thinking about it.  This Diet Dr. isn't werkin!  Thought this would be a nice play this morning.  Emerson, Lake & Palmer from 1970 and their first release.  I won't get into the personalities of the 3 but they ALL meshed so darn well.  Keith Emerson on keyboards, Greg Lake with the vocals and bass and Carl Palmer on the drums.  One of the most successful progressive rock bands of the 70's w/9 Gold here in the US and worldwide sales of more than 48 million copies.  They just did it ALL!  Love my neighbors!  😂  😎

I remember hearing brain Salad Surgery for the first time, about 13.The album assaulted my senses  aurally in a similar manner of viewing my first Playboy magazine.I still have a Japanese pressing of Welcome Back My Friends CD (1982?). Great live album.I also have an MFSL Tarkus I never opened , LOL.
