  1. PhilMays,

I originally bought 2 of these new and was going to run them mono blocked. I decided to "burn them in" one at a time. After firing the first one up I was shocked at the output from it. They never got mono blocked. No need. This one sat unopened in my bedroom. Loads of super clean power to them. The sound was so sweet. Music out the wazoo. I love them. I let my buddy buy the first one to push his Altec 804E models. After hearing it he sold his Pilot 260 on Ebay and kept the AMC. He bought a second when He hooked it up to his 804s. He tried to buy this one first but I was having the power supply for the McAlister rebuilt and re-doing one of my MC275s. A couple of weeks ago I traded my Toyota van for a pair of MC75s and I've got way too many amps. Musically the AMC is a favorite here but the big high buck collectibles will have to stay for a while anyway.

I've got a couple of other AMC products and have to say they all have sounded great. They're definitely one of the best buys for the buck around in audio.

  2. It is a great sounding tube amp. Especially with the Heritage. I'm short on good tube preamps. Too many good amps. I love my McAlister PP-150 amp but I don't have a good pre for it. I've got a Dodd ELP but it's not matching up well with the McAlister. The little Pas-2 I picked up from Joshnic doesn't do bad but Still not what I'm looking for. I need a good Preamp bad. It's the only reason I'm getting rid of it.

  3. Hi, I got my big amps all rebuilt, tuned up, ready to go and I'm wanting to sell my AMC EL-34 30wpc tuber. I'm going to buy a new tube preamp and would love to trade this basically new amp for a nice preamp. This is the amp we used at Colters house for the "Tube & Bube". It has right at 70 hours on it now. Absolutely flawless in every way. Like new. Original box and paperwork.

These sell for right at $1,000.00 now. They were on special price when I got it. $400 shipped to U.S. 48.

I'm looking for a quality tube preamp. Any takers or interested parties? I'll give "boot" for the right pre.

  4. Do some research and you'll find most surge protectors are useless except as a terminal strip. Power conditioners are better but nothing is perfect except not having them plugged in. I'm running through a couple of Variacs. Still not totally safe.

From a dependability stand point I'd stay from the HKs and Onkyo. Ask around at some of the service desks about models coming in for repair. Even under warranty. I like Denon but they're getting the same reputation lately. It's simple, but use VERY GOOD SPEAKER WIRES!!!!!!!!!!! It helps.

  5. Nice custom project. It sounds like you came out with a nice center out of the deal. Everything has a way of working out. Nice fit also!

Lacquers can be a pain in the wazoo to work with. It's a soft finish also but has it's own look. After drying and soaking time I'd bet it buffs out nice. 3M has a good finish polish/glaze called Finnessit that finishes off lacquer beautiful. It can be applied by hand or machine. I use a sponge pad for machine application. For hand finish I like the Maguires no.7 glaze. I've been using these products for over a decade with super results.

I was sitting here thinking: My local Ovation has quite a few "scratch and dents" new Klipsch speakers. Is there a factory packaging problem? Maybe someone from Klipsch could chime in on this aspect. I know package handlers can be very rough on stuff but....

  6. It's a Pas 3 or possibly even a Pas 2. The Pat 4 has vertical rocker switches, Pat 5 horizontal rockers, and the Pas 2/3s have the small push across switches. I have a Pas 2 & Pas 3, and just sold my Pat 5 a month ago. On a sound observation, my Pat 5 had a very similar sound to the Pas 2 and 3. The most noticable difference was a little sharpness on the top end with the 5. Still very good sounding. Especially for SS. They're not top end by any means but a good sounding pre for the buck. The Pas-2 is shown in my avatar.

  7. Hey Doc Who. Just my 2 cents worth of nothing again.

Yea, you have a tendency to rub my deaf old ears the wrong way from time to time and I even cuss you in low tones in front of the screen. OTH, I admire your commitment for education, asking questions, and your motivation to succeed. I'm even envious you have this opportunity to better your mind through continued education and practical experience.

Don't let them get to you. You're all right in my book. You'll just be better when you wear long pants and let some experience bust the youthful exhuberance.

JMHO if H can ever apply.

  8. I looked and I've deleted the comparison pics. I do have some pics I took this morning of my Wallrus with the Old Master gel stain. It shows pretty good detail of the grain and even staining. You can PM your email address or I can reply through my email address below and I'll send you the pics if you like. I can't get the pics downsized to post.

Arfandbark may still have the pics but he won't awake until sometime around "The crack of noon" or so.

The only problem I encountered using the gels was when I used the "recommended sealers". With the Old Master I even sanded down a couple of motorboards I had already stained with the different stains and stained right over without stripping or sealing. Nice even staining without wood bleach or anything. I was just experimenting with new technics for different effects. I came up with some really cool fireburst looks and some really unusual but beautiful finishes.

  9. You can get finishing quality Scotch Brites at a local automotive refinish store. It comes in a couple of grades. The white being the finest and choice for "scuffing" between coats.

If you want you CAN use sandpaper. Use a finishing sander with Maguires sandpaper. It has a very uniform grit and doesn't leave the inadvertant scratches. Use 300 grit or finer and you can save hours of hand time with no unwanted scratching.

I've being doing quite a few cabinet projects lately. I also have a female friend that refinishes vintage furniture for a living. I've found through her suggestions NOT to use Minwax products for a superior finish. I've been using Old Master penetrating gel on birch and it is NOT blotchy and really brings out the grain on the veneer. The clear doesn't soak as bad as the Minwax and reduces the work time considerably. My second choice is Varathane. Again a very even stain and nicer clears if you want to use clearcoats.

I sent Arfandbark some A B C comparison pics of the different stains. I'll try to find them. Even the camera shows the difference in the stains. Arf may have the pics still if I don't. The minwax was definitely on the bottom of the food chain. Not even close.

  10. You guys are selling me what I wanted and I was correct in my thoughts on this. I love the ShengYa 24-bit / 96 with the Philips transport. I've always been a vinyl freak and the last couple of years I've been getting into the CDs. Last year I bought the Jolida and played a bit with it and liked the sound but I still liked my vinyl best. Now the ShengYa has me selling off my turntables and vinyl collection I've had since the mid 60's.

As with most audio the more I hear the more I can find need for improvement. I figure this import player can be improved upon and I know there are many fellow forum members as serious as I am. This HDCD tuber woke me up on CD sound and I'm the type to find out what I can before I make the switch. I've already got an AMC DAC but not the upsampler. I haven't even heard of upsamplers until you guys brought it to my attention. This is why I asked.

NOW FOR THE BIG QUESTION! Are the differences worth the bucks? I love my audio and it's probably my biggest vice and most relaxing and stimulating of my diversions to the daily grinds.

  11. D D,

    Thanks.

I'm really looking for a multi disc unit. I got spoiled with numerous full cartridges laying around for selections. Also, on 2 disc sets it's nice to let the player auto load the second disc. I do NOT want to give up sound quality for convenience though. I'm probably just lazy but I do like the comforts of technology. Next is a nice remote controlled tube preamp.

    Lazy in Indy,

  12. I recently acquired a Sheng Ya / Vincent tube HDCD CD player. After a bit of tube rolling ending up with vintage Bugle Boys and Seimens,I am blown away with the smoothness of this nice unit. Even the lower quality recordings sound very good. Now my questions are...1) What types/models might I try to get a very high end player? 2) Can I get higher quality in sound? Preferably multi disc.

    Thank you,

    HarryO

  13. Josh,

It sounds like the same quest we all have. Recently I have been buying "Samplers" at our local Flea Market. At a buck each I get a very good selection of artists I've never heard of and their offerings. Most of the recordings are excellent and I've been introduced to some great music I would otherwise never have been exposed to.
