  1. So here is what I picked up. I got 100ft of 14 gauge speaker wire (GE brand) at home depot. Bought banana clips from monoprice along with some HDMI cables. In addition to the Sony receiver, I also picked up a Denon AVR 2802 receiver. Then today I also picked up a pair of Klipsch WB-14 bookshelf speakers. Brand stinkin new in the box for $140!
  2. Well. I got a really good deal on the Sony STR-DA5200ES. It is in beautiful condition, but I have not yet hooked it up at home because I need to get some better speaker wire and banana plugs so that I can bi-amp my WF-34's (this receiver allows you to use the surrounds to act as the second connection). However, having said this, I am severely tempted to pick up one of the recommended receivers so that I can compare them against eachother. The Sony was demoed for me while connected to a Sony Bluray player (playing an audio cd) and hooked up to a pair of $4,000 B&W speakers. It sounded really good. But, I will have to see how it sounds hooked up to my speakers. So is there a general agreement that I should buy my speaker wire from monoprice.com? I don't even know if I can get 12 gauge wire from Radioshack.
  3. I am in Santa Cruz, but I don't really have a problem with driving up to San Jose or even to Palo Alto if I can find a good deal. As I said before, I have my eye on a Sony STR-DA5200ES, but that is just because I have mostly owned Sony's in the past save for one Yamaha (which was great).
  4. Actually I have never purchased speaker wire from Best Buy or even from Circuit City (when it was still in business). I have always gotten my speaker wire at Radioshack (don't throw tomatoes, there are not a whole lot of high end audio shops in Santa Cruz). I checked out Monoprice.com and I am overwhelmed at my options. I don't know where to begin! Are we talking about something like their 12AWG Enhanced Loud Oxygen-Free Copper Speaker Wire Cable - 100ft? I am supposed to go check out that Integra DTR 7.1 tomorrow morning, but now I am not sure if I want to pay $175+ for it. I have to drive 45 minutes to San Jose just to check it out. Then again, I was considering just getting the Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K from BB or perhaps even the Sony STR-DN1000. So many options!!!!
  5. What do you know about the Integra DTR 7.1? I found one locally on CL and people seem to like the Integra.
  6. This is going to be both a home theater and a music source. However, at this stage, it is unlikely I will have surrounds (my wife doesn't want a lot of speakers in the house). So it will be a 3.1 system and then I will listen to my CD's and iTunes library through the receiver. I am looking around, not finding a whole lot in my area in terms of receivers, but probably the most difficult part of all of this is being patient.
  7. I just purchased a new pair of Icon WF-34 tower speakers. They are beautiful and they sounded great at the shop where I bought them. However, my 8 year old entry level sony receiver doesn't make them sound nearly as good. I have come across a Sony STR-DA5200ES receiver for about $400 and I am very tempted to scoop it up, however I have seen that one or two other guys on the board who have found receiver's by Integra of Pioneer for under $300. Does anyone have anything comments? I like the fact that this receiver has HDMI inputs, but I have heard that some people consider Sony to be non-audiophile. I am just starting out in this whole higher end sound stuff. Seriously I have never owned anything high end except for when CD players first came out and they were super expensive. Thanks!
  8. I recently replaced my Boston Acoustics Lynnfield VR965 speakers with a smaller pair of Klipsch WF-34's. I honestly have not considered getting rid of my Boston's until I took a moment to listen to the WF-34's at my local Best Buy. I was surprised by the sound that came out of these skinny sexy tower speakers and I knew that I had to have them. A few friends laughed at me because they have B&W speakers, but I was not going to be swayed. So now I have them set up in my living room. I have an older Sony STR-DE895 receiver that has served me well for the past 6 years. However I cannot help but feel like my old receiver is not up to the task of powering my new speakers. Someone told me that I should bi-wire the speakers to my receiver to improve the sound, but after doing a bit of research, that doing so wouldn't really make a difference. Any tips or suggestions? I was looking at the STR-DN1000 by Sony and the Pioneer VSX-1020-K. I want something that can take my HDMI devices and give me good sound through my new speakers. I am sort of an amateur at this. Thanks!
  9. My CS-700 gets stuck after I insert a disc. The display simply says "Reading" indefinitely, but it never actually loads the disc. I only see the Klipsch logo against a black background on my TV. In addition, the audio cuts in an out while I am listening to the radio or an external source. I am not sure if it is the speaker cables (yes they are more like cables) or the head unit that is the problem in this case. I called technical support today in the morning and was advised that I needed to "reset" my system. I was told to unplug the subwoofer, then unplug the head unit for 20 minutes. Then plug it all back in and turn on the system. So it didn't work. I tried calling technical support back on multiple occasions today, but I kept getting a message saying due to circumstances "beyond our control" that they could not take my call. So, for the moment I am back to square one. Anyone got any wisdom to share?
  10. No bourbon here, but I did watch Adam Sandler in the movie "Funny people" and that was enough of a distraction for now.
  11. Not sure if this is the right part of the forums to post this question, so please don't flame me if it isn't. I just bought a Klipsch CS-700 2.1 home theater system on clearance at Best Buy. I knew it was an openbox item, but the label (their open box items are always labeled and state whether or not their are part missing) did not indicate that there were part missing. When I asked the salesman if the system was complete, he said that it was complete if the label didn't say otherwise. However, when I got it home and opened it up, it was missing the remote (crap!), antenna (not horrible), and one of the speaker cables/wires (uber crap!). I called the store and they proceeded to tell me that this was a final sale and that I cannot return it and if I have any problems with the system, that I have to go through Klipsch. This is a first for me, and I was pissed off, but after several attempts, I have not been able to get anyone to accept a return or at least order the missing parts for me. Of course the speaker wires/cables for this unit are proprietary and therefore I cannot go to Radioshack and buy 14 gauge speaker wire to use instead. Also, without the remote, accessing the menus will be extremely difficult. To make things worse, when a DVD is inserted, the head unit simply reads "reading" endlessly and doesn't actually load the disc or play it. I have been told by management at Best Buy that the unit is covered by the standard warranty, and therefore I should be able to resolve this with Klipsch. Unfortunately, but the time I found all this out, Klipsch was closed for business. While I wait for tomorrow so I can call Klipsch and find out what I should do next, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Frustrated [8o|]
