  1. Yeah, I'm with you on the framerate issue. I'd like to get a Suma geforce2 GTS Ultra, but 1) I live in the US and 2) I don't have like $450 to blow on a vid card, unfortunately. So I want the best performance for the money. The Geforce MX DDR is around $145, and the next step up as I see it is the Geforce 2 GTS 32MB at around $220. The 64 MB is $285. I dunno. It seems like the MX DDR is the best value performer. ------------------ A flute with no holes is not a flute. A doughnut with no holes is a danish.
  2. OK, all this talk is making me drool. I'm going to upgrade my TNT 16 MB. Does anyone have a Radeon yet? It may not get quite as many FPS as the GF2 but like everyone's saying, who cares whether it's 80 or 85 FPS? Anyway, I'm wondering if the picture quality is as good as the reviews claim. That would probably sell me as long as the drivers are stable. //edit// OK, just read a bunch of reviews and maybe the Radeon's not the one to buy. What do you guys think about the Geforce2 MX DDR as a good choice considering bang for the buck? I found the Asus (the only MX DDR I could find, BTW) version for $142 on www.pricewatch.com . ------------------ A flute with no holes is not a flute. A doughnut with no holes is a danish.
  3. Hey Steve, what's with the plethora of space quotes? They're pretty interesting, I must say. ------------------ A flute with no holes is not a flute. A doughnut with no holes is a danish.
  4. I agree with you Jamus, although I'm a little further behind than you. I'm running a TNT 16MB (!) on a PIII 500. FYI: I have it "overclocked" to 105/115. Whew! Wanna talk about old tech? I just can't justify shelling out $400 for the latest and greatest vid card, although I probably should upgrade since anything would be a pretty big improvement.
  5. Hey, I'm a fast newbie now! When do I drop the "newbie"? ------------------ A flute with no holes is not a flute. A doughnut with no holes is a danish.
  6. Speaking of static, I've been getting this funny crackling noise every time I turn the volume knob. Does anybody know why . . . oh, nevermind. About Ameritech again: my buddy tried for 3 months before Ameriturd finally got their act together and actually got around to installing his DSL. Of course, he's in the building next door to me and the buildings are the same since we share the same landlord. He can get DSL, I can't. Whatever. I might just buy him a router and send a cable across the courtyard to share his DSL line That'll show those bastards!
  7. I'm also paying about $27 for basic service plus voice mail. I haven't chosen a long distance carrier yet, though I probably should. I'd like to get DSL but Ameritech can't wire up my apartment building for some strange reason . And cable internet won't be available till next spring.
  8. Hofy, I like your mounting system, however, is there a mod in the works for stand-based system utilizing the advantages of your duct tape mounting technique? Perhaps a tape-based adapter for commercially available stands? I was thinking of maybe a piece of dry wall CNC'd to mate the sats to the stand. Of course, tape would hold it all together to minimize the harmonics from the dry wall and to maintain your patented aesthetics. BTW, my cat's head won't fit into the subwoofer port. Does it need to be all the way in to fire or just the body? I want to make sure I do it right the first time. Thanks.
  9. Hey, check it out: another GF2 vid card, this one made by SUMA. It's got 64 MB of 5.5 ns memory (as opposed to 4 ns in the Ultra) but it's supposed to cost around $300. Mmmm, tasty! There's a review in www.tomshardware.com if you want to tease yourself. If I were spending KBlair's cash, though, I'd go with the Ultra, just because you NEED 64 MB of 4 ns DDR RAM!
  10. Well, at least you wouldn't have to upgrade . . . for a while. What's up with the $2500 vid card? Where can I get one?
  11. Impressive review! I tried downloading the Detonator 3 driver but the Nvidia ftp and http servers were hella slow on my slo-modem (200-300 bps!) so I gave up. Seems that the new driver should even help my TNT card run faster (yeah!) Man, after reading that review, I can't wait until the NV 20 comes out! However, if they don't get faster memory to match the faster processor, it won't really matter THAT much. And, OMG, how much will it cost?
