  1. I have one very popular record where you can hear the noise suppression fad in and out. It may mean that you are playing too loud or you have too much sizzle on the top end....it can also be just a bad job of the recording arts.
  2. Bingo. Having worked on many systems I can confirm that solutions have to be worked out and sometimes it's not easy. I have never run across an issue with the house grounding although I'm sure that can be a problem in some installations but it is not common in newer houses. At least not in my experience. In most cases doing the work of finding the offending component provides the best results. I can almost say with some conviction that audio systems should be free of any noise if you have taken the time to solve all the issues.
  3. Mostly it's just a matter of balance. Both internally and sound level.
  4. 5500 posts and you don't know how to quote or are you device limited?
  5. I'd rather not use a component like that with my amp and high end cables. Worried about the affect on tone/sound quality with the thin RCA cables, etc. Agree but it's a good tool to isolate the offending component.
  6. When you have a 60hz hum, you have two or more grounds, lifting one is still safe. If you are paranoid make sure you pull the cheater plug when you make any changes and reconfirm you still have a group loop. I'm paranoid and don't like using a cheater plug but remember you are not lifting THE ground you are lifting an extra ground.
  7. It's a ground loop. Drop the ground on one piece of equipment. Just make sure that if you change anything make sure it's grounded before power up.
  8. The EL-34 can produce about twice the power of an EL-84, however they both sound very nice. It's more a question of how much power you need, with most EL-34 amps making more power.
  9. I thought the volume knob was the smoke controller....live and learn.
  10. No, no, no. Electronic devices run on smoke. As long as you keep the smoke in the amp everything will work fine. As soon as there is a leak and some smoke is let out, the amp will quit working. I thought everybody knew that?
  11. If you are a big believer in blind testing, just remember that Amar Bose developed his doctoral thesis and the Bose 901 using blind testing. Maybe they are still doing that because the latest version of the 901 truly sucks. I prefer to use extended listening sessions with multiple sources before I form an opinion but heck what do I know?
  12. Quicksilver Mini or Mid monos, Very nice sounding amps. The Mini-mono is powerful and beautiful sounding. I'll never sell my pair.
  13. Darn it Dave, I don't want to spend another 20,000 on a second pair of speakers or another 8,000 on an amp and I still wont have a center channel. You got to feel my pain on that one?
  14. Get a pair of JBL L-200s, you can use them as a walk-up bar when you don't have them cranked up, lol.I've been trying to snag a pair of L200s for about a year on local Craig list. [emoji22] That is one of the great speakers systems. My buddy has a pair that he bought new and never thought about getting another speaker. Good hunting.
  15. Dave, let me continue to entertain you. I have no apology for preferring two channel sound. Of the handful of great systems I have heard, they were all two channel. The Infinity RS1B, the Infinity Servo Static IIA, Magnepan 3.7s with RS1B woofers, Sanders Model 10, and a couple of others. Few of those systems would be suitable for multichannel listening on the budget I feel comfortable with. If and when that changes, I'd still would not have any music to play as stereo is still the most popular format and the bulk of my music collection. Nothing about past experiences (Hindenburg syndrome) is holding me back from changing to multichannel sound, except I have never heard a multichannel system as good as the best two channel systems that I am familiar with. Two channel is thriving, it's a great time to be in the hobby.
  16. That's an easy answer from my perspective. The first and biggest problem were the competing formats. That made everything more complex in those days. Then you needed to throw your electronics away and buy 4 loudspeakers. People found out that 4 good loudspeakers cost money and two great loudspeakers sounded better than 4 good loudspeakers and cost less.
  17. Quality, as in the quality of the sound. I started with a mono rig and I'm finishing with a stereo rig. This is the two channel forum and I'm firmly in that camp, sorry.
  18. Hello, You resolve your problem? There is no problem in hi-fi that can't be solved by a giant money infusion...
  19. Dave, it is simple for me. Quality is everything for me and good 2 channel gear is pretty expensive. Two great channels sound better than four good channels so until I hit the lotto, one pair of 20,000 buck speakers is enough for my budget. No way I can do that in six channels.
  20. Get a pair of JBL L-200s, you can use them as a walk-up bar when you don't have them cranked up, lol.
  21. Don't give up, it's really easy. Buy a DBX crossover (http://www.amazon.com/DBX-223xs-Stereo-Crossover-Connectors/dp/B004S2FVSM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421367206&sr=8-1&keywords=dbx+crossover). You'll need an additional set of interconnect cables and maybe some adapters and another set of speaker cables and you are ready to go. Whenever you bi-amp, you need to split the frequencies and set the amp levels due to having two different amps. It's not that complex but it does add some complexity. Your speakers are already set-up for this, you just have to dump the strap between the terminals.
  22. Most definitely. In my main systems, with panel speakers, the sweet spot is very small. For me the 3D imaging is everything. It's the whole reason I spend time and money to get things just right. My rooms are dedicated to good stereo sound and that means the furniture has to be in the right position. Oh how I suffer for my art, lol.
  23. You can make design trades but at the end of the day, you have to sell product. I thought the Avantguard Trio sounded pretty good but how many 70,000 dollar + speakers can you sell? Enough to keep the doors open?
  24. Just checked, the Mid-mono has an led bias indicator so all the tubes will get the same bias. The amp can run according to QS: EL-34, 6L6, KT88 or KT90.
  25. Designing great horns is easy, that research was probably finished in the 50s. Making loudspeakers that sell is a harder problem.
