    SVS Reviews

Try the shack. They have a forum devoted to SVS.
  2. Single RCA will work fine. Set the crossover on the sub itself to the max, 120Hz, or whatever. Just crank it all the way up. Then set the crossover in your AVR to 80 to start with. Only one crossover should be used. And welcome to the forum.
  3. That's what you left off your list:Plastic slipcovers for seating - $75.[]
  4. If it's a stuck pixel rather than a dead one, and you can hook the TV to a computer via DVI or VGA, you could try one of the software programs that try to fix stuck pixels. Worth looking into at least.
  5. The Yammy DVD player only does 1080i, the Oppo will do 1080p.
  6. What kind of TV have you got, or planning to get? If you have an extensive DVD library already, you may want to take a look at Oppo DVD players, they've gotten lots of favorable mentions, and the price is right. I'm personally waiting for the HD disc "war" to flame out before buying into it.
  7. I'll let him speak for himself. Read his two posts in this thread. Then check this thread. And if you'd like some more, try this one. And if you want to read his post slamming the majority of the forum members' rigs, see here. His first post in this thread is on the second page, most of the way down. I went off on him a bit on the next page.
  8. Actually, the model looks to be made of sugar, spice, and everything nice. [] Oh, I see, you were talking about the speakers. You should be able to get expanded steel or aluminum like that at a steel supplier, and I'd suggest getting it powdercoated. The steel supplier should be able to cut it to whatever dimensions you want, and likely knows of a powdercoat shop in your area. Or you can mail them to me, I'll get them powdercoated for you for the cost of shipping both ways.
  9. See here, almost all the way to the bottom of the page.
  10. Serious or not, they need someone who successfully completed the fifth grade to write their copy. Here's a direct quote from their web site. "This material can stretch to 1.7 times its weight, allowing for un-presidential travel." I think I'd prefer presidential travel. I hear the inside of Air Force 1 is pretty damned posh. And how do you stretch something a multiple of it's weight? Talk about apples and oranges. I was so thrown by the "un-presidential travel" that I completely missed that the first time.
  11. Start watching for Quintet systems on ebay, etc., and then get a refurb or used receiver. Or buy yourself a new receiver, and give him your old one for Father's day.
  12. I think the sound quality will be horrible through the glass elevator, and leakage out of the shaft might be a concern also. (If it's heard clearly inside the glass elevator, it will be heard clearly outside the glass shaft, right?) I'd look hard for a solution that would use one speaker in the elevator, and some kind of interface with the elevator controller that would fade from one song to another as the elevator moved. The supplier of your elevator equipment may be able to help, I'd think. Even if you have to have some custom electronics work done, the cost difference may not be that much, as you'll only need one speaker/amp/source, instead of 4 of each, and it won't have to be a big amp either. I didn't think I'd ever see someone ask what Klipsch speakers to use for Muzak. []
  13. Crappy cable guy here again. [] OK, unplug your RCA cable from the coax input on the back of the receiver. The ONLY things plugged into the back of the receiver are the cables going to each speaker, and the power cord. That's it, nothing else, no inputs at all. Do you still have the hiss? If you do, then it's the receiver. If not, then it's your source or interconnects. If the above test leads you to suspect the interconnect, get on the computer and look up BlueJeans cables or monoprice.com. I bought from monoprice, very happy with their stuff and the price. Or, stop by BB or CC and get a Monster or whatever.
  14. If you like fiddling with hand tools and such, you might try making one. There's a looooong thread about making antennae here: http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=9613 If you don't mind spending some time fiddling with it, it could save you a few bucks. Good luck.
  15. Here's a site I found helpful in clearing things up. http://www.hdtvprimer.com/
  16. lol....true. I was wondering why so much hatred for the brand? Maybe they had PMU systems that went belly-up. It is engadget, after all, so a bunch of computer geeks. And yes, I can say that, I are one.
  17. Well, 2400W=20A@120V, so yes, you're bumping up against the upper limit. However, keep in mind that most amps are rated at their max, and I doubt that you'll be driving them that hard. Equipment like TVs, CD players, and such are more likely to use their rated power. You could buy a meter and check, to see where you're really at. Here's a review of one that looks pretty nice: http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/review/kill_a_watt_electric_usage_monitor_review But another circuit would be a fine idea anyway.
  18. I thought you didn't have much room for surrounds? Guess that's out the window, as CW and Chorus IIs aren't exactly what I'd call small. Listen to some stuff both ways, and make the decision that way. Switch back and forth several times for testing purposes. They're so easy to move around the room, you know. []
  19. LOL, I wondered if he'd read the rest of the post after the words "the customer service guy at Best Sounds told me ..." Yak hair, phooey. *I* use a combination of chemically bonded chinchilla and llama with a super secret braid style, and an "Ultra Twist" of lemon juice.Seriously, though. I was the Emotiva / crappy cable guy. The interconnects between the pre/pro and the amp were the trouble. Reading back through, you have the hiss with NOTHING connected, except the speakers and the power cord for the AVR? Is that right? Is the hiss equal in all speakers? Try rerouting the speaker cables out in the middle of the room instead of along the walls, just to test. If they're near any other signal cables or AC cords for other equipment, try twitching them around so that the other cable and speaker cable cross each other at 90 degrees, instead of laying next to each other. Good luck.
  20. Cash always speaks pretty loudly. I think it physically hurts salespeople to watch a bunch of hundred dollar bills get folded up and put back into a pocket as the customer walks out the door. []
  21. As I understand it, and have experienced it, moving your head, or a microphone, just a few inches can make serious differences in levels, depending on the frequency. You might want to move your listening position forward or back, or possibly reposition the speakers. I don't think just tilting them will do anything for you, as it's the room itself causing the drop in bass in that area, not the orientation of the speakers. If you can move your speakers to the listening position, then do so, and do the "bass crawl", literally crawling around to find where the bass is loudest. Then position the speakers as close to there as possible. Generally this method is used to find the best location for a sub woofer, but it could work for your mains, too. You obviously want to keep them separated, and at equal distances from the LP, but it could help a bit. You could always experiment with tilting them, I can't imagine it would hurt them any, unless you laid them way over. Have some friends over for pizza and beer, and right after you order the pizza, have them start moving your speakers around while you sit comfortably, and compare the bass from position to position.
  22. My thoughts, (which may be seriously flawed, as I'm a Heritage guy), would lean toward getting whatever bookshelf speakers will match your (future) mains of choice, and use them for the mains until funds allow the purchase of the floorstanders. Then move the bookshelf pair to surround duty. This might not work for you, depending on your room, etc. Just my penny's worth. If you do go that way, just make sure that SWMBO is aware of the space requirements of the floorstanders. I'd suggest getting or making some speaker stands that have the same footprint as the future floorstanders, so that you can keep the space clear of other stuff. Gotta stay ahead of the curve on this kind of thing, 'cause if mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. Oh, and welcome to the insanity, sorry about your wallet.
  23. If you're looking at Onkyo, try shoponkyo.com, for $399 shipped they have the 604 refurbs. Hopefully you'll get some other suggestions too.
  24. What!?! You don't have an IB? I thought you had them all! []God help me, I think I'm being sucked into the cult, so I may have one in my future, too.
