  1. Well after alot of research, learning, and experimenting my custom rf7 center channel is almost complete. The first step was to remove the old motor board and fabricate a new one from 3/4 inch mdf. The routing was a chore since I had I to do it all freehand. After the motor board was finished I revenered the cabinet in 20mil ash that I got from oak wood veneer company in Michigan. I then used an alcohol based wood dye to go over the veneer to get it black. After that was finished I used deft brush on lacquer semi gloss as a clear coat. It was my first and last time using lacquer. It was to time intensive to get an even finish with the proper gloss sheen. Polyurethane wood have been alot easier. I still have to give it the final buffing out, but I will let the lacquer cure for a few more weeks. I'm waiting on the grill cloth and magnets that go into the motor board to hold the grill in place(empty holes in motor board in the picture). I used two halves of a couple extra rf7 grills to fabricate the new grill. All in all I'm happy with the results and learned some new wood working techniques in the process.
  2. The motorboard itself is mdf. I removed the motor board and decided to fabricate a custom rf7 horizontal center channel with repositioned drivers and put new veneer. A couple of questions for the those that have converted a speaker to a center. First do the ports have to be repositioned as the woofers will be relocated and second how do you disconnect the tweeter horn as it does not connect with the same slide on terminals as the woofers. Also are there any recomendations on fabricating the motor board itself or any other helpful tips. I have all the tools at my disposal to do the of the repair and conversion of the rf7 into a center channel. Any help would be very appreciated.
  3. The box was damaged and the fedex delivery driver would not stay long enough for me to inspect the contents. Their is also cosmetic damage on the top and on both sides. I just didn't post pictures of the other numerous areas. The people at vanns said the speaker only had a slight scratch on the front of the unit when it was shipped and that the box was in perfect shape. Needless to say vanns was excellent to deal with and stated they would deal with fedex. I have purchased from them on numerous occasions, but this was the first speaker. They did not even want pictures of the damage. They even offered to pay someone to dispose of the speaker. I was more than willing to send the speaker back, but I can't complain as the drivers are in mint shape. I'm just interested in the best way to go about refinishing the cabinet itself.
  4. Well I finally found a single black ash rf7 for center channel duties and it was delivered by fedex yesterday and they did a number on it. I purchased it from vanns as an open box. I called vanns and they refunded my purchase and said fedex would come pick the speaker up on Monday. They then called backed later and said that since it was delivered 3 day that fedex would not pick it up so I could just keep it and do whatever with it. The drivers are in perfect shape and the speaker works and sounds fine. It is just that the cabinet itself got pretty beat up. I have included pics of the worst damage and my main question is the cabinet fixable as all the damage is cosmetic. Could the veneer be removed then reveenered or covered over with new veneer? Any help on fixing the cabinet or another suggestion would be very appreciated.
  5. dvcdude At the moment I currently use an onkyo 804 as a pre pro for the lossless audio processing via hdmi, but I plan to replace it as soon as more hdmi prepros show up on the market at less than 3000 price tags. Hopefully by the end of the year emotiva will release their new prepro with hdmi 1.3 and losless audio processing. boston klipsch If you have to have a rotel go with the 200 watt per channel version. You will gain more headroom with the rf7's. Also the more powerful rotel amp should be able to handle the rf7's independence dips at certain frequencies. As I have no experience with the two rotelsyou are deciding upon check the manufactures website to make sure the amp is stable into 2 ohms.
  6. I have heard amps from all three of these manufactures with klipsch speakers and the nod goes to the rotel it provides more bottom end punch then the other two. I have always found adcom amps to have a dry/bright signature to them which doesn't match well with the rf7's. I recently purchased an emotiva mps-1 and It mates very well with my rf7's as it is 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms,300 into 4 ohms, and 400 into two ohms. I suggest you take a look at it as you can order it in the 5 channel configuration for 1300 and free shipping. Emotiva also has a thirty day return policy if you do not find you like the amp. You can also add the other two channels down the road if you need then for 200 per channel since each channel is a mono configuration so each has its own power supply. This is important for ht because each channel will always have the max power available at any given time instead of amps like the adcom and acurus that share a single power supply for all five channels. Lastly you could also look at the offerings from outlaw audio. I have not heard or owned any, but I have owned an ati amp which is what outlaws designed is based on. Other forum members could provide better info on the outlaw.
  7. Well I'm Getting another pair of rf7's to use as surround duty so my rs7's are for sale. I purchased them from another forum member last month and they are in pristine condition. I will ship in the orginal boxes or you can pick up locally if in the area, asking $425.00 plus shipping. SOLD I'm also selling a sony kds-60a2000 1080p sxrd rear projection tv that was purchased new last October from circuit city that includes a 4 year extended warranty from Sony that is transferable. It has been my bedroom tv since new, but the wife wants a flat panel for the new house so I have to part with it. The tv has roughly 300 hours on the bulb and looks brand new local pickup only, asking $1500 which is less than half what I paid. E-mail for more picks
  8. The batman begins is the hd dvd and one of the audio tracks is dolby true hd. I have a toshiba hd-a1 and i use the multichannel analog outputs into my onkyo 804, thus the player decodes the audio and sends it to my onkyo in its uncompressed format. There are also a few other warner titles on hd dvd that contain dolby true hd soundtracks. I also have a ps3 for bluray connected via hdmi and it sends uncompressed pcm to the onkyo. There are currently no receivers or preamps that decode any of the lossless formats the decoding has to be done in the player and sent out either analog multichannel outputs or through hdmi via uncompress pcm.
  9. 1. NIN beside you in time hd dvd (true hd audio track) best sound I have heard yet on any format! 2. Batman begins (true hd soundtrack) the chase scene 3. king kong (dolby digital plus) the t rex battle scene 4. pearl harbor bd (5.1 uncompressed pcm sountrack)the attack on pearl harbor a workout for any sub 5. the descent (6.1 uncompressed pcm sountrack) best I have heard for use of the rear surrounds
  10. No it is the 60 inch xbr2. I thought about the 70, but decided against it as I plan on going front projection(jvc rs1) when we get our new house this spring. The sub is where it is located because I currently live in an apartment and we have neighbors on that side. It does sound awesome, but I haven't been able to listen to it at reference levels just yet.
  11. Heres a pic of my home theater in progress. I have to thank mark maple for the rf7's, jzoz01 for the rs7's, and xdetroitx for the heads up on the svs pb plus 2 sub. Still to add is a pair of rf7's for back surrounds and a new pre pro.
