  1. I have way to much stuff sitting around and not enough space. I really do not want to part with the jbl's as they are by far my favorite 18 inch woofer, but I don't have the space to build another cabinet. I currently have 8 jbl 2226's I'm working on cabinets for (4 per side). Also the chase subs are great, but I'm thinking of building a few horn loaded subs.
  2. Well I finally have the plan for my new system so I have multiple items for sale -3 jbl 2242 18 inch woofer- These are in mint condition. 2 of them were reconed last year by Tom at speaker workshop in fort wayne Indiana with genuine jbl cones. The other one has the original cone in great condition. Price is $300 per woofer plus shipping in the CONUS. You are also welcome to pick them up. -2 Chase Audio CS18.2 subwoofers- These are sealed subs with dual 18 inch woofers- I paid 850 a piece for these a few years ago. Asking $450 per sub with local pickup only as I do not want to mess around with freighting these. - Pair of eminence apt 200 tweeters $45 plus shipping -A pair of solen 3.0 14awg air coil inductors new 45 shipped - pair of peavey FH-1 bass bins unloaded. I bought these from Claude and I'm not going to use them. They are structurally sound but could use a fresh coat of paint $100 pickup only. Any of the items can be picked up from area code 46706 in northeastern Indiana. I'm about 2 hours north of Indy and 2.5 from Chicago and Detroit
  3. Looking for a good condition pair of klipsch k43's. If you have a pair in good condition let me know your price.
  4. I still have my dbb bottoms. You can never have enough of a good thing. The dual jbl 2242's per side are huge step up from the dbbs from 40-150hz, but I prefer the 15's from there they have a tighter punchier sound. My dilemma is do I keep the 2242's and go with the fh-1 bins covering from 150-350 or go with 4 jbl 2226's to replace the 2242's and fh-1's. I already have 4 of the jbl's I would just have to pick up 4 more.
  5. I'm almost finished with my final midhorns. I went through a few alterations until I was happy. Know for the bottoms. I'm not going to use the jbl 2242's for the bottom of the 3 ways as they just don't reach high enough. My next step is to decide whether to use the peavey fh-1's I bought from claude or another idea I'm toying with is using 4 jbl 2226j's wired in parallel per side( for the bottoms ) which would come out to a 4 ohm load. Just trying to get some input as to whether the fh-1's with the dual 2242's per side would sound better than 4 jbl 2226's. The crossover for the bottom is 350hz as I think this is where the horn sounds the best.
  6. Another thing to consider is ordering actual cherry 1*6 or 1*3 or what ever size lumber you need directly from the mill. You can ship ups as long as the board is under 8 feet long. I'm pretty lucky as there is a mill only a few miles away. I'm able to go pick out my lumber in every type of wood imaginable and they will also make up my edge glued panels and plane them for me for cheap. They also import exotic woods. You might give them a call and see if they will ship you a few boards. Here is the link to their retail website http://www.wiblesupickhardwoods.com/products/moulding-products/s4s-s2s/ The boards are s2s and s4s which are a little thicker then 3/4 as that's whats used in cabinetry but they plane them to 3/4 for free.
  7. Just remember a sanding sealer seals the wood. You want the stain to soak into the wood and its pores. The best item to use before the stain is pre-stain conditioner.
  8. I have been woodworking for a while as a hobby(thanks dad) and continue to learn new things along the way. First off the polyshades by miniwax is junk. Some might not agree but the results are always less than you get doing it the longer way. If I was staining popular in cherry I would 1. pick like boards that are free from the green or greyish color then make the project 2. sand smooth with 220 grit sandpaper 3. use a prestain conditioner as without you will get blotches in popular when staining 4. pick a stain that is a natural cherry color stain and apply 5. after the stain dries apply some sort of sealer I like minwax sanding sealer dries quick(do not use if using lacquer) this steep is not necessary since your staining the wood but when using ploy I always get better results 6. I like polyurethane even though its harder to work with. I let each coat dry for a day and sand in between with a 600-800 grit sandpaper. I'm not a fan of steel wool or a high gloss poly. I usually always use satin poly. The key to poly is to have a dust free zone( I have a section of the shop quarantined for the purpose and if applying in a garage or a place where you cannot control the humidity only apply on low relative humidity days It seems like a lot of steeps when they make polys with stains, but the results will be a lot better. You can be the best woodworker in the world but if the finish looks bad the whole project looks bad. I have had a few projects were I wasn't happy with the finish and totally redid it.
  9. Well I was going to go but my 6 year old son has strep throat and I have to stay with him. To everyone that goes enjoy!
  10. They are going to be used in lascalas by the new owner. Yes I made the claim in good faith as these were the only universals alk sold at the time. I did not know there was a special version for cornwalls. My intent was not to bully anyone. I welcome any and all comments as long as there are facts to back them which the original person who raised the question did not present, but I'm glad he brought up as many of us probabley didn't know there were different forms of the universal alk crossover. I do know the one alk currently sells is compatible with cornwalls and heresys so when I posted I just went based of that info.
  11. I sold them a while ago. I do have a set of new 3.0 14awg solen air core inductors that I was going to use for a project but it never matured. They were $35 a piece. I would let them go for 45 shipped for the pair. Let me know if you are interested.
  12. I'm glad you clarified everything dean. I bought all the parts for these and built them to the attached layout from alks site
  13. To clarify these use a 12 guage 1.3mh solen coil in the woofer section. Also when I talked with al in building these he recommended the tweak as I had both 1.3mh inductors and 2.4.mh on hand and there was a tweak to the design. I didn't know that there were various revisions to the universals. My intent was not mislead anyone and I appreciate dean chiming in on the subject and others. I can handle all the scrutiny in the world as long as facts are provided and Dean is the man when it comes to alk type crossovers. Also the goal with these was to have a truly universal crossover that would not only work in my lascalas, but also my dbbs which they did. I also used them in my cornwalls and they worked but I used a different midrange horn and forgot about the original cornwall crossover point when I posted (had to look it up).
  14. Before you make a post in some one else's thread please know your facts. They will work in cornwalls and in fact the universal is the only crossover al sells for the cornwall. Sorry I didn't explicitly state it but they will work, but are not meant for heresys.
  15. Priced lowered to $350 plus shipping on the alk universal. I will not go lower as it would cost a few hundred more just to build this using the same exact parts. Remember this will work in all the heritage lineup as well as a cornscala and cornwall.
  16. Open to all suggestions with the build. I'm waiting on the seos12's and have completed a full set of the 223fc tractrix horns, but they are airing out as I just finished painting them yesterday. The black on the inside curves of the prototype was some caulk to make sure everything was sealed. The system will be fully active using a minidsp 2x8 with all qsc amps for power.
  17. Well its that time of year again to experiment with a new speaker build. My last speakers were dbb's using the crites cw1526c woofers. Having owned all the heritage line I was never fully happy with the bass. The dbbs was definitely a step up from my lascalas. Never being content, over the last few years I managed to acquire 4 jbl 2242 18 inch woofers. My original idea was to use them as subs, but went another route. So last fall I built dual bass bins for them and they replaced the crites woofers in my 3 ways. I have to say from 40-300hz they are monsters of slam, but they drop pretty fast after 350hz. So I have decided to build a pair of jwc's 233hz tractrix horns and mate them to a pair of jbl 2485j 2 inch compression drivers. The final design is going to be: - jbl 2242 dbbs from 40-350hz - jbl 2485j on the 233hz tractrix horn from 350-3500hz - b&c de250 on a seos 12 horn from 3500hz-20khz When it is all said and done if it doesn't work out I picked up a pair of peavey fh1 bins from Claude and could use them from 100-500hz and go 4 way using the 2242's from 35-120hz. I finished a prototype of the 233fc tractrix. I threw it together in about an hour so it will not win any awards in the looks department, but it allowed me to get a few quick measurements. I had to take it in room as I have no way to go outside and take measurements. Here is the graph taken 1 meter from the mouth of the horn at 0 deg
  18. I have had a few questions regarding the crossovers they are built to the original alk universal crossover schematic using all solen air core inductors( 12 awg in the woofer section and litz air core inductors in the mid and high end).Clarity caps in the mid and high sections. These ARE NOT based on the economy version which alk currently sells. The parts in these are well over the $500 mark.
  19. Bump. Alks universals still available. Open to reasonable offers.
  20. The 2485 is a discontinued driver it was created to replace the 2482. I almost never see the 2485 come up on the used market. I got lucky when I got mine off of the original owner who had only used them a few times he was a local guy who collected jbl items. This was around six years ago before the prices went through the roof on the 2480 series drivers.
  21. Lowered price again on alk crossovers down to 400 shipped. These will also work in cornscalas.
