  1. Finally have these in the corners and playing music. More work need's to be done, but for now I'm going to enjoy them. http://vidmg.photobucket.com/albums/v674/tubejoe/klipschorn_zps9ziqulc2.mp4
  2. Thanks HDBRbuilder for the info. John, they look the same as they did in my 2005 post unfortunately. And I guess they are pre 1962. Anyway to pin point the date? I just want to get these setup and start listening to them. I'll get to improving the cosmetics hopefully soon. I'll also try to get some pictures posted once they are installed in my system. Thanks for all the replies. Regards, Joe HA!! I haven't been on this site in so long looks like I posted pictures back when I got them, 2005. Can someone confirm the date? looks like they are 1962's? Here's the old post, I hope.

  4. Hello, I've been out of audio for a number of years now, chasing cars. But now starting to get interested in audio again. I bought a pair of old Khorns with wood horns about 10 years ago. Trying to determine the age. I read the date code info and honestly i'm stumped. Type K-DFR, Style D, serial numbers 1732, 1733. Finish FR. Can someone please decipher the date and other info for me. Regards, Joe
  5. My business plans changes slightly so I had some time to do a bit more work. I removed the woofer that was giving me trouble. As you can see bugs have eaten part of the surround so I'll have to get a new cone. I'll look at the other one soon. A few questions: 1. I lightly pushed down on the cone- no movement. If this was a good woofer it would move, correct? 2.The baffle that the woofer was attached to had black tacky material on it to seal it air tight. Do I need to source new material or use the old stuff when I assemble the woofer once repaired? 3. Is finding a new cone with the paper pleated surround going to be next to impossible?
  6. If you are on the East coast, Audio Classics is the place. They will make it perfect, but at a price. I have had several pieces of rare tube gear, Mcintosh and Marantz, repaired by them. They do top notch work. http://audioclassics.com/
  7. I finally found the stamped serial numbers. I took the top portion off the bass bins in preparation for the veneer and hidden underneath on top of the tail was the stamp. I have to leave the project for the next week because of business. I'll report back once I continue. This will give me time to consider what veneer I want to use. I'm thinking walnut but am open to suggestions. I really like the more exotic types, but I'll have to weigh out the cost. In the meantime, please vote for you favorite veneer. You guy's have been most helpful.
  8. Thanks Trey, I failed to mention that the serial numbers that I first mentioned,1732,1733, came from the original registration cards the first owner gave me and never sent in.The serial numbers for the mid horns are,1928 and 1931, "BY" PG. I assume that PG is the person that made the horn's?
  9. I made a little more progress this morning. I spent about an hour removing all those staples and remaining cloth from one of the cabinets. This was a real pain. I had to get a blade under each and every one of the staples to lift the edge up enough so I could then pull them out. Of course I left all sorts of marks on the surface and my hand HURTS. This pretty much settles it for me. They will have to be veneered to make them presentable. No sign of a stamp on the cabinets. I'll open the access door and take a look around. Once again thanks for the help.
  10. Guys, I just got home from work to read all your great comments. Thanks for all your help. This is really a great community place and I REALLY appreciate the outpouring of knowledge. It is pretty dark in the garage now, but I took a flash light and looked for the stamp in the location that Trey indicated. I just do not see anything. I'll take a better look tomorrow during the day. The interesting thing is the sticker's on the squaker horn's have the word "date" printed, but there in no date marked! It is not faded, it looks like it was never marked. What does that mean? The reason that I assumed that they were 62 is the guy I bought them from said that he bought them new in 62 in Galveston, TX. I guess that he could have bought a pair that had been setting around for a year? With regards to the veneering. I have done a fair amount of this type of work but never on such a large scale. I was planning on emailing Greg928 and Jorgen once I get to that point. If anyone on the forum has a K-33J they want to sell, Please contact me. I too like the look of the exposed horns, but the raw wood is not to my liking. I want to veneer them to make them work for both me and my wife. Khorn 58, are you suggesting that this might not be a good idea as far as retaining its collectable value? Would it be better if I left the finish alone?
  11. Thanks for all the replies, especially the tip on Orange County. I've done a little searching in between taking these things apart. According to the info that I have found, these could be from 1948-1961. How's that for narrowing it down! This info indicates that a serial number should be hammer stamped into the tailboard, woofer door or the woofer chamber. I cannot see anything on the tail board or access door. I sealed the woofer door up after I took pictures so maybe it is there. Here is another picture of the back of the speaker without the extra stuff. I have more pictures, but if you guys are getting sick of seeing them, just say the word. I want to post more once I get the veneer applied. This will take me a while as I leave town on business in a few days.
  12. No disrespect taken. I know that I have a lot of work ahead of me. In a perverse way I really like these types of projects. The main thing will be removing the 4000!!!!!!!!!! staples that were used to attach the cloth. I'm one of those types who wants to get to the veneering ASAP. This woofer problem is the type of thing that I hate dealing with. The driver is a K33J. A Jensen driver, thanks Frzninvt, I assume a alnico magnet. The new ones from Klipsch are probably ceramic, right? Any mismatch with using two different types of drives? I guess I'll probably start searching Ebay. I really like these old things and would like to keep it original if possible. How does one negotiate around the basket and magnet to screw in the screws on the far side of the driver? Looks like that will be difficult.
  13. Here is a front shot. I'm pretty sure that the top and the added back pieces are not original. I guess that these started life as the utility cabinets. Unless I hear otherwise, I'm going to rip the extra pieces off. I'm now just noticing that one of the woofers is not working properly. I get some output but is sputters. If I crank the volume I get more sound but I also hear a buzzing from the driver. It's not totally fried, anyway to repair this? Looks like it will be a tough job to secure a new driver in. Aside from this they sound great!!!!
  14. Just removed the added cloth covering the original owner put on.Here is a shot of the extra cabinet work.
  15. As I posted last night in another thread, I just got my first pair of Khorns. I believe that they are 62's. They are pretty ugly and will need lots of work. My plan is to dress them up with veneer. I have a few questions that I hope you experts can answer for me. Are they indeed 62's? Serial numbers are 1732 and 1733. They look like they have extra, non stock cabinet material added. The wood is chip board and the overall quality is not the same as the rest of the cabinet. Can someone confirm this? I have a series of pictures that I will post with many different shots. Thanks for your help.
  16. Funny that you posted this message today. I just finished unloading my 62, I believe, KDFR's, 10 minuets ago, in the garage. Serial #'s 1732, 1733. They will need some cosmetic work. I will post pictures soon. I have several questions about these speakers. Looks like they have some extra cabinet work added to the back!!!!
  17. John, I sent you an email. But, if you happen to look here first. I'LL TAKE THEM!!! Please contact me at the phone number that I provided. Thanks again Joe
  18. I'm in Texas and I'm very interested. Please email.
  19. Thanks to all who responded. I guess the consensus is to leave them alone! I will damp the squwaker and fill with fiber and maybe Al's crosovers. I also want to rewire with silver wiring. What wire do you guys suggest? To answer the tube amp question, I currently have two amps that I use; a Mcintosh 275 and a pair of Marantz 9's. I've been into tubes for sometime and have owned several different amps. I have never tried a SET though.I think the wife would kill me if I bought another amp. Thanks Joe
  20. Hi all, I'm new to this board and am I'mm looking for some insight to improving my 73 Belle's. Has anyone used vintage JBL, EV or modern TAD drives on the Mid horn? It currently has a K55V. Also what about the woofer? Is a JBL D 130A a drop in replacement? Overall I like the stok drivers but I would like to experiment. Crossover and wiring changes are also on my list, but I would like to get comments on the mid driver and the woofer first. I like the stock tweeters(K77) EV's I believe, but relize that it would be hard to mount something in the K77s place. However, how about a JBL LE 175 mounted on top of the cabinet!!! Al comments welcomed. Thanks Joe
