  1. Welcome to the forum.

The RC-64 is a great speaker. So great that many here on the forum would use them as the front three if there was a way to rotate the horn 90 degrees. I think $649(35% off msrp) for the RC-64 is a good price.

As far as the cherry RF-63's go, 6ave.com still carries them but the website says "Availability: Ships Out in 3-4 Weeks. Vanns and OneCall both state no longer available.

I think your Onkyo 807 is capable of running your system. Now if you really like to listen at high spl's, make sure you set your crossovers no lower than 80hz to let the sub handle the mid bass on down.

Adding an amp will definitely improve the quality of your system all across the board. Louder, deeper, and crisper, with more seperation and also will take the strain off of the amps in the receiver. I run a 3 channel B&K amp(200w/ch) for my RF-63's and RC-64. To me, there was a night and day improvement in my system with the amp than running my Onkyo 705 alone. Emotiva, Rotel, NAD, Parasound, Anthem, are just a small list of other good amp companies that offer 2,3,5,7 channel amps.

Either of the subs you mentioned are good choices at good prices, however you can get more bang for the buck if you purchase from one of the online sub companies like HSU,SVS,etc.

Move the QIII's to the bedroom and look for a good deal on the RS-42's,52's, or 62's.

  2. "Unfortunately, in the place that I want to hang them, there is no stud."

He said where he wanted to hang them there was no stud. As you probably know, most wall studs are placed 16inches on center. A 17in. piece of plywood should overlap any studs and be able to be screwed to them.

  3. You should be able to go to your local home improvement store(L***S or HD) and find a huge assortment of drywall anchors. Some are even capable of holding up to 75lbs.

If you have the room, another thought would be to cut a say 17in x 17in piece of 7/16in plywood and screw it into the studs. Then secure your speaker to the plywood. Paint the plywood to your liking and picture frame it. You then have a secure mount that should easily pass the WAF.

  4. That is an awesome stand but it's depth isn't enough to accomodate the amp which is 19 deep.

Oh yeah, I knew that. I have a spreadsheet in my computer listing many amps that will and will not fit in my stand and all the Emo XPA's will not fit.

    Sorry about that.

  5. What size is your flat panel TV? I don't know if you have more $$$ to spend but here is an idea. You can accomplish all goals(raise TV, raise center channel, room for amp) with this. I have a BDI Deploy stand that I am using a 45lb amp and a 28lb receiver on bottom shelf. Mine is just like this one but is one tier shorter.

Add this for your amps if you still can't decide.

  6. Hey Cigarbum,

Did the Nacoochee Valley pick up any snow in that last big storm? I have visited your area many times during Octoberfest and the Spring and Summer, but have only seen snow up once maybe 25 years ago. Is there a "White Christmas" in the GA mountains this year?

    Merry Christmas,

  7. Even though I should go back to playing with my 5 year old, I'll sneak over here and answer your question. That does not seem like a bad deal at all. That sub will work fine with the SL's. Just remember one thing, upgraditis is really easy to catch around Christmas time. To avoid that and to spend less $$$ in the long run, buy the best setup you can afford. If not, you could always move this setup into the bedroom and buy a mack-daddy system for your main room.

    Merry Christmas ,

  8. Obsolete, like vinyl?

Yes like vinyl. Yeah right. Vinyl layed dormant for a few years but on a smaller scale(OK a tiny scale) has made a come back to satisfy many music lovers(OK for a small niche market). With the majority probably being members of this forum.

I have seen many threads on other forums and publications that the cd format is dead. Not to me. As long as I can keep finding cheap quality players and used cd's I'll be happy.

  9. You're doomed!! You have the virus for which there is no cure!! Just skip the whole "justification" trip (which is painful....) and just go for K'horns now!!! LOLOL!!!! Cool

    Okay Groomlakerarea51,

That was pretty funny and I guess I paved a way for an answer like that. A somewhat expected reply from a forum member(just did not know who). Now please provide a more realistic answer specific to my question if you will. None of the options are really necessary but I am just curious to see what the majority of Forte owners would do.

  10. I have a pair of Forte's that I am considering upgrading with Crites crossovers and titanium tweeters. I really like the Forte's in stock form but was wondering if finding a pair of Forte II's would be the better option? I am very impressed with the smoothness of the mids in my Quartet's with the tractrix horns which leans me toward the Forte II's.

One main reason to keep the Forte's and just mod them is because the cabinets are almost perfect and the drivers(passive and active) are in equally good shape. I know it will cost me more in the log run to keep them and modify than to sell and buy the Forte II's.

I guess my question is: mod the Forte's or get some Forte II's?

  11. Again I score at an S.A. store. I visit my local store at least once a week and it completely amazes me of the discarded(donated) gear you can find. I picked up an (1987) HH Scott DA952 cd player for $14.99 back in June. Nothing really special but no scratches, no dust, perfect operation, and made in Japan.

Then in September I find a (1985) Denon DCD-1500 cd player for $19.99. Very few scratches on top but perfect operation with good build quality and made in Japan.

Then again yesterday I enter the store with no real expectations and leave with a (1990) Kenwood DP-7010 cd player for $24.99. Few scratches on top, perfect operation, very good build quality, made in Japan, and also optical and digital coax connections.

What I am getting at is with many factors in place(bad economy, digital streaming becoming the norm, and all in one players), people are dumping their cd players left and right. If you refuse to believe that the cd format is not becoming obsolete, go to your local thrift store(SA,GW, etc.) and pick up a nice player and while your there take home some used cd's.

Don't forget pawn shops and C-list.

  12. Welcome to the forum. Be careful, that plunge can be a bottomless Klipsch pit.

It seems like you are hitting the Marantz's power threshold. The RF-63's have some low impedence dips and maybe your 5003 is going into thermal protection mode to of all things "protect". Those are pretty high volumes you are listening to so it may be very wise to get that outboard amp if you want to keep listening at high spl's. When watching movies at such levels, those bombs and crashes easily hit those power peaks. Keep it at "normal" movie watching levels until you add the amp or replace that receiver(or speakers) sooner than you want.

  13. Your profile picture shows shows the Quartets next to the Reference series (I think). Which do you like better? I'll be able to afford more next year if it's worth the wait.

Actually those are Forte's sitting between some KG4's and RF-63's. Since the photo I have sold the KG4's and purchased the Quartet's(which are in spare bedroom).

To tell you the truth, both the Forte's and the RF-63's have their strengths. I have found the Forte's do very well with low wattage tubes and low wattage vintage SS. If you really want them to sing and you have a large volume room, pump at least 125w/ch of SS juice. Being a 3 way speaker, you will get better seperation in the mids with the midrange horn over the 2 way RF-63.

On the other hand, like the RF-7's and RF-83's, the RF-63's love power. I use them mostly for HT but for 2 channel applications, for a 2 way speaker, they are very smooth with the tractrix horn. They both sound great but just different.

  14. From what I can see, your limitations are in the width of your room. With that said, your average floorstander is probably out of the question. As far as the QIII's and the SL's, you will get a little more depth and volume from the SL's. Where are you located? Maybe us on the forum can better help you in your search.

How would you integrate the Yamaha with the Onkyo?

    Bill

  15. I can't make heads or tales of the SN#'s on my Quartets but the input terminal cups also says 1989. My Forte's SN#'s indicate they were mfd in 1985 with the cups also stating 1985. I am not sure if this is true across the board.

If the Quartets are in very good condition, $400.00 seems to be a fair price. Audiogon bluebook indicates the average used price from Feb 02 to Oct 09 to be $500.00 with the last sold at $510.00. I think a more realistic fair price in this economy would probably be closer to $350.00. If you are considering the Quartets, make the seller an offer and see what happens.

    What is your location?
