  1. Everybody wants dynamics and clarity in their systems. What have you done to get closer to live music? I do not believe i can ever get to the realism of live music, only closer for sure. While giving my daughter away in a marriage ceremony this past week in Queens, I visited a Jazz club in Manhattan. The band played Caribbean Jazz. The female singer was from Port Au Prince and unforunately, the bands name has left me for now. The band was made up of piano, keyboard, trumpet, drums, two saxiphone players and of course the female band leader. I sat about 20 feet back centered to the band. An excellant location for listening. Also, behind the band was about a 150 foot glass wall where the NYC landscape could be observed while dusk turned to night. Any poster you have seen does not do justice to this view. The sound was real and the dynamics were amazing. While the music ranged from interesting to pretty good to most outstanding, I realized I was getting my ears retuned to what live sound actually sounds like. I am looking for ideas. I'm usually slow to change equipment because you do not always get the changes you expect when doing so. Plus the ole "Your Mileage May Vary" is so true. Hence my question to the listening music lovers of the Klipsch Forum. Presently, my 2 Channel system is fundamentally outstranding (my opinion). I run a turntable (with phono preamp) or a CD player through an Intact Audio volume control transformer (passive setup) which takes care of the clarity aspect. Followed by the signal being fed to EV DX38 and on to two Crown D75A amplifers and then to my Jubilee speakers with Faital drivers in the upper horns. Turning up the volume and removing amplifier gain limitations of the amps I believe has helped bring the realism closer, but it is not what I heard at the club. So, what do you think? Thanks
  2. Joesportster, I have and use this switcher. The switch is solid and feels good when selecting, meaning it snaps over to the next input versus a easy slip over to the next input. The case is a thick plastic. It is simple and it works well. I use it as you would in your decription. And I agree it seems too expensive, but I have no complaints. I have had it about a year or so.
  3. USNRET, Is their a recommended driver for that model?
  4. I will be there Saturday around 11:30 AM.
  5. May 2nd, 3rd and 4th That would be Friday, Saturday and Sunday Just north of Dallas http://lonestaraudiofest.com/ No charge to get in.
  6. Mike, Oh, by the way, the turntable was purchased purely for the Panasonic cartridge. The interface circuit board was a bonus to use until he builds a better interface.
  7. Mike, Your turntable puts out a high level signal, so you have to treat it like any other high level input to your AVR like tuner or CD player. It does this because Panasonic put in this SL series a Strain Gauge Cartridge. It is alot different than a MM, or MC or Ceramic. It works on a different principle. Inside your turntable on the other side behind your jacks you will find an about 4x8 inch circuit board. It supplies Voltage anywhere from 12 to 15 VDC down to the cartridge. I have found that a strain gauge is the most dynamic cartridge you can get for little money these days. The circuit board is commonly referred to as an interface board. The board quality is not super, but its not bad. It was mass marketed turntable. Building your own interface module from circuits found out on the internet while may be a pain, will get much better sound than what is inside your SL-800. About 10 days ago a buddy and I took out the interface board and power cables from an SL-701 and placed the strain gauge cartridge on his Technics Sl200 series turntable and it blew away the MM he had in it before. It was either a Shure or Audio Technica. We were stunned with how great the sound was. The cartridge is worth more than your turntable. With a great interface box, you will probably never go looking for another style of cartridge again. JICO sells replacement stylus for around $112. The turntable originally sold with a Panasonic EPC-451C/Semiconductor Cartridge. If yours is this model, then it is a keeper. Pansonic also made other strain gauge cartride models, so the cartridge number may differ but will be close. Search some on strain gauge or the Panasonic cartridge model and read up on the accolades. Go to Soundsmith on the internet and price their systems and you will agree with its value. A few years ago interest in these cartridge swelled. If you want to sell it, you probably would have no problems. Connecting a non strain gauge cartridge to the interface supposedly can seriously damage the cartridge as electrical current is going through the cartridge. So, maybe the damaged wires were from someone who was trying to hook up another type of cartridge to an external phono preamp. Enjoy.

    The Wind Rises

Miyazaki is one of my favorite animated film writers/producers. Spirited away was really something else. I totally agree with your comments.
  9. DizRotus, Is this a scenario where once its gone, then its over acquiring any through you?
  10. At first I thought this would be an easy question, but there are so many... Male Artist/Composer - Mike Oldfield Female Singer - I still reach for Diana Krall or Sarah Brightman Band - Zac Brown Band or the Dutch band named Within Temptation
  11. Thanks for bumping. Interesting. quote from poster/inventor george timbers on the Lansing site "The sonic effect is one of smoothness, increased spaciallity, detail and stuff like that." Sounds like an improvement to me. Thanks for the link DavidF.
  12. A very powerful song. I tend to skip it also. Having 4 kids, the emotion and the pain you go through listening to the story, is sometimes too much. I do not enjoy what it does to me, but I am in awe as to the way a song can pull on your emotions.
  13. Yes, I had an acoustic guitar in the same room where I listened to music on my stereo. Often, when the music quit paying I could hear the resonation out of the sound hole of the acoustic. Stands to reason a recording could pick up this same sound.
  14. Wow, nice frame and matting. Color coordination is spot on. What did the frame shop charge for that? Is that the RF83 depicted in the poster?
  15. Joe, I use the 2 Terabyte Western Digital Elements models. The ones I have are USB 2.0 but I would recommend getting the USB 3.0 as they are coming down in price and are much faster for transfer of files. I have about 5 Western Digital harddrives I use around the houae some of which are 5 years old and I have had no failures. One of them I carry with me everyday to work and has four years of service.
  16. Congratulations Bob. I am glad all went well. Happy New Year
  17. Summer of 1973... Driving through my home town in my clean 1964 Plymouth Sports Fury convertible with the top down... Ran into a Jaquar while playing loudly on my radio was the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations". Great song
  18. No better way to jump into vinyl than with the music you like and with clean records. Gotta turntable yet? How are you going to clean the records if required? Storage for 600 records, now that is a few linear feet. Sounds like a lot of fun. With records in that great a shape it sounds like you better go get them before someone else does.
  19. Although not 100% true, I have found that if the record jackets are in great shape then you you can know the records were cared for. And I have also found some awful jackets with pristine records in them. Have you looked at them yet? Are they clean? Any warped? Were the sleeves replaced with new ones? Sounds like you have a good oppotunity to acquire a huge assortment of good music and music history. Also, many record buyers of the 79s would play them once and record to cassette to reduce record wear.
  20. I use to buy alot of CDs from Pawn Shops. And one shop in particular had the super machine you use at the library. In a conversation with the shop owner 3-4 years ago about his machine, he said they had vitually no returns and if a buyer brought one back in that would not play, they would just put it though their machine for them. Owner said he hardly ever could not bring one back to playable condition. Good investment for them. I don't see many CDs in the Pawn Shops anymore. Lots of movies tho. Standard DVDs for a buck. Blu-rays for $3.50.
  21. Pulled the plastic encapsulated battery out... Plugged in charger... Fired it up.... Worked fine... Turned it off... Unplugged the charger... Two days later... Plugged in the charger... Fired it up... Worked fine!!!! Cooling fan ran slower too... Battery not needed apparently.... Thanks to everyone for your quick and insightful input. Very much appreciated.
  22. Oldtimer, I'll have to get back with an answer later. Are you asking if while I am using it for the 10 minutes before it shuts down, if it gets hot at the point of shutdown? When I turn it on, it has usually been unplugged from the charger for days maybe. And it does not come on. What if the answer to your question is yes? The cooling fan is on constantly when powered up.
  23. Schu, Are you saying the battery is not the type that would leak? And there is not a concern with having this 10 year old battery constantly trying to take a charge?
  24. Tigerwoodhorns, The OS is Windosw XP Pro. CECAA850, I'll give that a try.
