  1. I have an old DELL XPS Series laptop, vintage approx 2003. Excellent laptop for its time. I use it only for playing FLAC files, occasional music DVD, not much else. The battery holds a charge for maybe 10 minutes when charger is unplugged. I do not take it anywhere. It stays in the stereo cabinet ready for use.. I am concerned about batteries as they get old and possibly leak and could damage the laptop. Will laptops continue to work when the battery is removed and not replaced as long as you keep power to it from a charger? And if I remove power to the laptop after the battery is removed, does it lose anything that the battery would have kept refreshed? Thanks.
  2. tigerwoodKhorns- the salesman was kinda indignent and only wanted sell me a Sumiko Blue Point Special. he was one of those guys wondering how much I had spent on my system. I could have asked, but I really did not want to deal with him any longer. The store has been closed for over a year, so I cannot go back. Besides it would be more fun to be able to view the condition here at kome. Thanks. William - I believe you are correct in that it would not be of the necessary power to see the stylus condition I want to see. Thanks for the offer. I would have to ask myself, if I could be able to determine stylus wear if it was staring me in the face. I think I could resolve irregularities in shape, or something gross like a chip, but after that I suppose I would be guessing. But I believe a strong microscope would do the trick and a stylus in worn or bad condition would be recognizable.
  3. RickFL- idea of a kids microscope was good, but I did that a few years ago and now cannot find it. It did not really give a fine enough picture. It was a USB teaching type of toy. Not enough room below the lens. I think the garage sale lady of the house has moved it out. Thanks. Mustang Guy, I have so many magnifiers and loops around here I picked up for this purpose over the years and none of them get down to where I can see the wear condition of the tips. Great idea. Just did not work for me. Maybe I have aging eyes. Thanks. emmvette, I will look at your recommendations. I had not run across this one. The answer still eludes me as to what power I need. With all the USB variations on ebay, I think I could get one, but not wanting to buy a too weak powered one is my caution. I have two stylus' for my old strain gauge cartridges that I want to try to take listen to. it has been too many years since I played with them and the condition of their stylus concerns me. I appreciate all the help. Still looking for answers.
  4. Question for the fellas who have been down this path before. What power microscope is required for viewing the condition of a cartridge needle. Ebay has many powers available for USB connection which are inexpensive. I took my collection of cartridges and needles into a brick and mortar audio store a few years ago and had the sales guy put them under his dual eyepiece microsope. He said "they all are bad and need replacing". Well, was he just wanting a sell of one of his pricy cartridges or was he telling me the truth. This pic came from the record cleaning thread. Thanks Mustang Guy for posting it in the thread. It would be nice to be able to get this type of magnification. Thanks.
  5. Can you please explain the merits of IOS Support as it applies to its use in the audio world. Or is it used in the video world? I am so ISO Support ignorant. Thanks.
  6. Now Jason str, the article clearly states you cannot hear the difference. But, if you find one with silver connectors and included cable lifters let me know. []
  7. Read some of the comments added to this article. Audiophools we are, they say. I guess they really do not have a clue. http://www.edn.com/electronics-blogs/rowe-s-and-columns/4421042/Can-You-Hear-the-Difference-

  9. Power to your attic that is controlled from a switch downstairs. All land lines should be home runs to the phone junction box, that way if one line gets chewed in half by a mouse you do not lose the others on the same wire run. Smoke detectors that work through your security system that are powered by 120 VAC with battery backup. Outdoor motion sensor lights If a single story house, use inexpensive plastic conduit to run down to your communication outlets in the rooms. This allows pulling new wire for updating communication systems or adding to what you already have. Pulling wire can be a real pain. Ceiling fans. In Texas you got to have them. As many as your decor will allow. Do not forget kitchens, bathrooms, porches and garages. Dimmer switches on overhead lights. If you hang Christmas lights outside then weather protected outlets in the eaves of your roof. Ground fault interuptors on kitchen, bathroom and outdoor power circuits. TV/internet cabling - whatever you may plan to use to the rooms that plan on using them and then some that maybe you presently have no plans for. Home runs for power from your audio room to your breaker box. If your house is fairly large, an intercom system. They come in handy. Beer tap in your audio room. Hope this helps. Most of this I did when I built my house 18 years ago.
  10. Honey Bees are very interesting insects. I used to have on my property about 3 large hives and 2 to 3 starter hives referred to as baby nucs. They run a very tight ship and very business like. There mannerisms and agressiveness is determined by the Queen’ Bee's Phemerones. If you have a hot hive where bees do not let you with in 50 feet or more without attempting to sting you, then you can re-queen the hive and within 30 - 45 days your hive will be much cooler (bees have a different temperament- new queen’s phemerones). Any bees that die in the hive are carried out by the bees and dumped on the ground. The hive must be at a certain temperature for the bee eggs to develop so the drones usually stand at the entrance to the hive and with their wings fan air through or into the hive to cool it if necessary. Bees that do not gather pollen and are suppose to gather pollen are kicked out of the hive. Bees rob from each others hives if it is not well defended. My large hives had over 100,000 bees in each. I was not the bee keeper. I hate bees flying around me, but my hives were so calm, that you could walk right up to them or cut the grass around them and I watched many a time the beekeeper take the lids off of the hives only to have most of them sit there and just look at him. I was in it for the honey and in one season I got over 6 gallons. Also the neighborhood benefitted from all the pollenations. I probably still have over 5 gallons of honey. One day I went out to check on them and found 98 % of bees in one hive dead. Speaking with the beekeeper determined that it is very hard to tell why they died. He speculated a pesticide of some sort but he said you really never know for sure. He came a week later and took the bees to his place to keep an eye on them. I do not expect them back. No other bee hives have died at his place So, I say all this because bees can be very interesting and that bee hive deaths do occur often with no real conclusions. A note of interest: Trying to re-queen an Africanized hive is futile as the Africanized bees will not accept her and will usually kill her.
  11. $176 round trip from Cleburne...Hmmmmm How close from the Amtrak station in Hope to Motel six? Amtrak to Klipsch? Is a car rental necessary? Hmmmmm
  12. When I lived in Florida, they were also used to make the best goober peas "boiled peanuts" ever. A buddy of mine used to bring his boiled peanuts to work and explained that the higher perssure would cause the salty water to get infused through the shells into the peanuts. You could eat a bag of them in no time. Often, a better treat than popcorn.
  13. Play'em or sell'em, indecision and whinin' will never get them listened to.[]
  14. Well Wuzzer. So, what did you think? I bought one on a similar deal 3 years ago (for $19.99) just to see if I could stand having them inserted in my ears and to see what the hoopla was all about for in ear phones. Turned out, I did not mind them at all in my ears. They also blocked out alot of workplace noise. I eventually moved up to a much better pair as I was listening more and more at work. I hook it up to a SANSA player with a 32 Gbyte memory chip and have many hours of different songs. If you do not mind the in ear placement but like the sound, then visit a store that will let you listen to the many models available. There is usually a store like that in the major airports. My visit was at the one in the Charlotte N.C. airport. I wish I could think of the name of the store. Happy Listening, Wrinkles
  15. I have been so waiting for this movie to come out. And will wait some more. It is one of those books that once you get into it a little ways, you do not want to stop reading. I will be at the first showing when it finally shows. Thanks for the update.
  16. From LOWES, I have the Troybilt push mower with the Honda Engine non-self propelled. I am on my second one. Seems my yard grows rocks. Starts first pull. Cannot beat that. Grass shavings back on the yard. FIre ants have to hide in something. I push about 6-7 hours a week.It is my weekly summer exercise, but I stretch it out over 3 days. Usually when my lawnmower runs out of gas, then I have run out of gas also. Only when it is approaching 95 degrees do I wish I had a riding mower with ice tea dispenser and a bimini top. You like your hearing, then use ear plugs. I know too many people that do not. Huh, they say. Safety glasses also a must.
  17. Final Bump. Starts this afternoon.
  18. It is good to see old friends, make new ones, talk audio and sometimes have a beer. And it is fun.
  19. With Dallas being so close to Hope, I wonder why Klipsch does not rent a suite and show some of its speakers. I bet a Palladium room or RF7II room would bring in a lot of listeners. Maybe one day they will show.
  20. Would you please elaborate on what Bob had observed on the Faital HF20AT versus the HF200. Thanks ---------------- Additionally, it begs the question: Are these used in two-way or in a three-way configuration and is the crossover substantially above 400 Hz or not? To answer the questions, let me say I have slept since then, but in our discussion I was looking for a much cheaper driver that could compete with the TADs. Bob said the HF20AT drivers factory curve was better than the HR200 curve. The HF20AT drivers were 2-3 db higher above 5Khz when compared to the HF200. I am using the HF20AT in a two way in a K402 horns. I tried to EQ it by ear with no mics and that turned out to be a waste of time for me. So, I used the same EQ as the TAD drivers and wow. Over the K-69-A drivers, it made a major difference. Crossover for the Faital driver is 400 and the bassbin at 450. These are the TAD crossover points as well. I expect Bob can give us any updates to his testing and use of both drivers. At the time he was using the HR200 drivers in his K402 horns. Wrinkles
  21. Juniper8, My pockets were not deep enough for the TADs, so discussing drivers with Bob Crites, I picked up from Bob the Faital HF20AT models. Bob had been testing this model as well as the Faital HF200 drivers. The HF20AT drivers were a major step up in sound reproduction of the higher frequencies. A few of the Forum members are also using the HF200 drivers with great success. Its nice to know there are alternatives. Wrinkles
  22. Lone Star Audio Fest 2013 occurs May 3, 4 and 5. Seems to have more exhibitors every year. http://lonestaraudiofest.com/ Those that may be interested... Diana Krall concert May 3rd just down the road. http://www.axs.com/events/2822/diana-krall
  23. Got it for my birthday [^]today.[] What a great CD. I had forgotten how much emotion Robin Trower can play with. But I guess when you play the blues, you better play 'em like you got 'em.
  24. Welcome Back and congratulations on the new arrival. From your pictures I see alot of nice tall items. When your baby begins to pull itself up on things like speaker stands and pole lamps, then you will need to watch the toddler more carefully. Voice of experience talking. Toppling over of stuff happens. One of my kids climbed a CD display rack in an audio store as high as he could go until it came crashing down. So, I would go with speakers with a larger base that cannot be pulled or pushed over easily. Your HK is close to the floor, always check that volume knob before turning it on. Youngsters seem to love buttons and knobs. Enjoy.
  25. I get them too. Have been for years. I have never supplied any info. I think it is some kind of scam. I can still use my Paypal.
