  1. Has anyone else noticed that Klipsch doesn't mention anything about the Heritage Series? Does this mean that they will be discontinued?
  2. Hi Snail's pace, Have you considered building a new cabinet? I have built a few for KLF 10's and KG 5.5's and it is not that difficult. As long as you cut your sheet goods square it is pretty easy. If you build 1 out of MDF it is pretty cheap also. You may also be able to buy cabinet grade plywood at a hardwood lumber yard and pay just a little extra to have the sheet cut to spec and be set. I have used both Mdf and plywood and have been satisfied with both. Q.

  4. I have found that Rhino compilations tend to sound very harsh, specifically the Alice Cooper 4 disc set and the Todd Rundgren best of disc. Q.

  6. I think they are very good speakers. I had a pair and they sounded very good with a yamaha receiver. I think that they were discontinued when the Synergy line was introduced. I sold my pair for $400.00 on ebay. I have seen other people get up to $500.00. If they are in good condition they are easily worth $450.00 in my opinion. Good luck. Q.
  7. I have a AVC-2500u that I use with an Adcom GFA-7000 power amp and KLF 20's. The 2500u is great. Dead quiet plenty of ins and outs. In 2 channel it sounds great and the suround sound is very impressive as well. The auto calibration feature is pretty cool and easy also. If you are into 6.1 or 7.1 surround you would have to get an out board decoder. I have no experience with the Sunfire equipment and doubt I will as much as I like my 2500u. I also can't comment on Parasound amps but I imagine that there as least as good as anything in the same price range. Also if you have any problems with the equipment Parasound will make it right. The customer service I have received from them is the best I have ever experienced. Hope this is of some use for you. Good luck. Q.
  8. I have been using Pioneer Elite 301 CD changers as transports for quite awhile. I use the DAC in my pre/pro with fairly good results. The only other CD player that I can compare it to is a Marantz 63se single disc player. I could tell no difference between the two as far as sound quality went. I understand that the Marantz isn't a true high end CD player but it was pretty good. I guess my point would be that I haven't felt that I am missing anything by using the mega changer. Actually the Pioneer sounds pretty good using its built in DAC also. Q.
  9. I replaced a set of 5.5's with KLF 20's in January. The biggest difference that I found was batter clarity on vocals. The 20's were much better at producing voices, male or female than my 5.5's. With movies it doesn't seem to be that big of a difference since the center is taking care of most of the dialog. On music however the difference was very obvious. As far as the center to use the 20, 5.5, and C7 all share the same tweeter diaphragm so it would seem that the C7 would be the best choice. I used a C7 with both the 5.5's and the 20's and was very hapy until I built my 5.5 center. Now I am even happier. Q.
  10. I can't offer any info on B&K but I do have some experience using a Yamaha receiver as a preamp. If you intend to do this you may find a lot of noise at low to moderate volumes. I had a RX-V692 when I bought my Adcom GFA-7000. I used the yamaha as a preamp for about a week and then had to buy a seperate preamp. There was a definate improvment in the overall sound quality but that noise was bad. When I hooked up a Marantz Pre/Pro no noise and I was very happy for a little while. Hopefully your receiver won't have this problem. Q.
  11. I have a Sony MZ-R50 walkman player/recorder. I think it is pretty neat. Mine will record off of satelite. What I really like about it is that it can be used to make live recordings if you have a mic. If you have a decent sound editing program on the PC you can end up with a fairly decent disc. Q.
  12. There is a prety good discussion on the merits of THX going at the AVS forum. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/004871.html Q.
  13. I have to admit that I would have never considered taking these speakers apart while they were intact. Fortunately for me UPS was kind enough to ruin them so I had nothing to loose. I doubt that I will be rummaging around inside my KLF-20's anytime real soon. On the otherhand, I did have a lot of fun making this pair into a couple of center channel speakers. Q.
  14. My AVC-1800 produced a considerable amount of noise at low volume in the left and right main speakers. I tried everything from line conitioners to using different circuits in the house and could not get rid of it. The signal sensing delay was bothersome but I could have lived with it. I also had a popping noise everytime I changed CD's, changed channels on the dish, or on the menu changes of a DVD. When changing from surround to 2 channel I sometimes had to adjust the volume control to get any sound. The remote is horrible compared to the Marantz RC 2000 MKII that I was used to. On the other hand when I took the unit to the dealer and hooked it up there it sounded great. None of the above listed problems seemed to be there. If you get 1 make sure your dealer will take it back if you have any of the problems I lsted. My dealer wasn't the easiest to work with but Parasound is very easy to deal with. To sum it up I think the preamp can sound very good considering cost, but it can be paticular about the equipment it is associated with. the Marantz AV 560 should also be pretty good. I have a 550 wich does not have DTS or 96Khz/24bit DAC, but it still sounds pretty good. Let me know if you need any more info. Q.
  15. When I used 5.5 mains I had both the KV3 and a KLF-C7. I liked the C7 best. Q.
  16. Does anyone have any experience with this pre/pro? I have a chance to trade my AVC 1800 + $1200.00 for a new AVC 2500. Any comments good or bad on this unit would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Q
  17. From my limited experience with this sort of thing I wouldn't reccomend messing around with the crossover. I thought about that breifly with my speaker and decided that the factory crossover was probably far superior than anything I could make. If you are already experienced at this sort of thing go for it, if not I think you would be better off using the factory setup. I was also concerened about the port being at one end of the speaker. My 5.5 originally had the port on the front. I placed the port in the center of the rear of the cabinet. I think that you would be best served by replacing the back panel and moving the ports to the center on yours also. If I were in your situation I beleive that I would try making it into center channel. If you decide that you like your C7 better you could always build a new cabinet for a standard KLF30. Probably the most important thing to consider is how you feel about the actual labor involved. I enjoyed the time I spent working on mine, but not everyone likes this sort of thing. I kinda hope you do it, if it works well for you I may be buying a new mid and tweeter and going at it again. Good luck with whichever route you take. Q.
  18. decibel man, This bass is much better than the C7. In fact I think the biggest advantage of going this route is the improved low end. It is especially nice on older movies that have a mono soundtrack. I connected the C7 and 5.5 using a cheap radio shack speaker selector. The difference in the two speakers was most apparent when a lot of action was going on in a movie. On music the 5.5 seems a little laid back compared to the C7. I don't normally listen to music in surround, but I was impressed with the way cd's sounded with my new center. HornEd, When I spoke with tech. service I asked about using a mid, tweet, and network from a klf-20 im my setup. I was advised that it may not be the best idea, especially considering the extra cost. In your situation I might try attaching the new board with screws so you wouldn't have a problem rearranging the drivers if they didn't work out. I would think that if you lined the midrange up on the same axis as the woofers and put the tweeter immediately above the tweeter that you would have a great center. I am very interested in your proect. If it works out I might be ordering a new mid & tweeter and starting over. Once again thanks to all for the kind words and support. Q.
  19. Thanks for the kind words. One of the cabinets was beyond repair. I don't really have room for 2 pair of full size speakers so I decided on the center idea. My father has dibs on the second speaker. If you can get everything you need to build a center for your cornwalls do it. I have had a lot of fun with this project. I did have the advantage of having most everything I needed. The second tweeter doesn't look as good due to some damage to the woofers and a hole in the tweeter horn. Luckily the damage dosen't affect the sound. Q.
  20. Here are a few photos of one of the speakers. Q.
  21. Afraid, If you are willing to buy a refurbished unit check out Accessories4less.com. They have the 8000 for $849.99 + shipping. I don't know how good a price that is compared to a new one, but it might be worth a look. Good luck, Q.
  22. I was going to post a photo of one of the speakers, but can't seem to do it now. I have both pretty well finished at this point. I have painted the speaker made out of mdf. decibel man is right on the money about the primer. I used 4 cans on the cabinet before painting it with semi gloss black. I am still trying to decide if I want to sand it down a little more and reprimer it. The other one is made of 3/4" plywood. I had reservations about using plywood but the thing sounds pretty good. I need to try to figure out a way to compare the two. The inside of the cabinet has been braced along all joints. I used 1 and 1/2 bags of fiberglass from radio shack along all interior walls of the cabinet. I may try to find a switcher of some sort and compare both of my speakers to my C7. If I do I will post my findings. I can not thank everyone enough for all of the input on this project. Now for another question. I am thinking about cutting some wedges out of scraps to use to angle the speaker. Does any have any thoughts on this or beter ideas? Once again thanks for all the help. Q.
  23. decibel man, Thanks for the info. I am doing pretty much what you advise. I sprayed a few coats of primer yesterday. I sanded the box between each coat. I am painting the box black and will probably do it the same way. Craig, Hate to hear about that. But at least you have a great center already. Good luck, Q.
  24. HornEd, Thanks for the kind words. I did not think about taking photos this time but I may try to on the second one. As far as deft cabinet building ability goes, I just built a very basic box, nothing fancy. the steps I took were also minimal. My main goal was not to change the box any more than necessary. With that in mind I tried to maintain the internal dimensions of the box. I decided based on the info available from Klipsch to leave the horn horizontally mounted. This made rear porting mandatory as there was no linger space in the front. I originally intended to try 2 ports on opposite ends of the cabinet. But sticking to the plan of not changing anything I didn't have to I stuck with the original port. I decided to mount it in the center of the cabinet so that it would be an equal distance from each woofer. I have no idea if this is the correct way to do it, just seemed like a good idea at the time. I added some internal bracing along the longest joints inside the box. I figure its probably a good idea to back up the glue that I used on those joints at the minimum. I also decided to use all 4 pieces of foam from both KG 5.5's in this speaker. This way I have just about the entire interior of the box lined. So far this has been a lot of fun. I am at a stopping point on finishing due to weather. I live in an apartment so I only have my patio area to work in. If I haven't provided all the details you asked for let me know amd I be glad to add more. Thanks, Q.
  25. I have 1 speaker finished to the point that I can listen to it. This is the 1 I made out of MDF. I built the cabinet to the same dimensions as the original KG 5.5. I placed the tweeter horizontally between the two woofers. I placed the factory KG 5.5 port panel, As close to exactly in the center as I could get it. The thing sounds great. I first listened to it alone in pro-logic with the soundtrack from Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil. Vocals were very detailed, the pianos sound like they are in the room with me, the highs are very crisp, and the bas is great. Next I listened to Dave Grusin: Homage To The Duke. Same as Above only more of everything good. I then cued up The Perfect Storm On the DVD player. I went to the Helicopter rescue scenes. The helicopter fly-bys blended perfectly with my KLF-20's And of course There was plenty of low end action coming from every where (I had my sub turned off and didn't miss it.) As it stands right now I am very happy with this center channel. I would appreciate any advice on painting MDF. I am thinking about putting a couple of coats of primer on and the using semi gloss black. Craig, as far as the placement of the tweeter, I installed it horizontally because I was advised that it would probably work best like that. I have to say it works pretty darn well that way. I went with the factory port because I wanted to keep the box as close as I could to the original specs. Also keep in mind that the Klipsch tech. service rep. Felt that the tweeter's Voice coil should be on the same plane as the woofers. I am inclined to agree 100% at this point. I am going to wait until I have this speaker totally finished before I start on the second one but at this point I don't think I will change anything. Q.
