  1. Chris, Sorry if I miised any discusion about your tapped-horn subs, but please tell us (me) about them. Did you build them from scratch, build a Danley kit, or buy pre-made? After looking at the Danely page, the TH Spud looks maybe do-able, it is big but shallow, similar to how your profile pic shows your system? [st] MORE pictures on us...
  2. The C-12 is a nice amp. My buddy used one to drive his Model 19s for a long time and that combo sounded great. A year or 2 ago he bought a Citation II... much nicer, to my ears. That said, if it is decent shape, well worth 100 bucks.
  3. tap, The very best I have heard my Klipschorns has been with the combo of Jolida JD-100 CDP, JM Peach, and Welborne DRD45. The only reason I changed was that the 2 wpc with the 45 SET tube left me looking for a little more output but it is by far the best sounding tube I have heard. For Jazz and Folk, the DRD45s were OUTSTANDING.
  4. If you want horn loaded car audio, look no further than Image Dynamic's HLCD line: http://www.imagedynamicsusa.com/products.php?Family_Id=5 I have not heard their horns in several years but the last time I did the sound was very nice vs. the Focals and MB Quart that I compaired the ID horns with. The real trick with the HLCD is the quality of the install and the car to accommodate the components.
  5. Just heard from Dave, the guy that was selling the Peach, he told me that he sold it in early August to a guy from San Francisco. Oh well, I thought I might be able to help... []
  6. Hey tblake10, I posted an alert for a Peach II a couple of months ago that was listed on Canuck Audio Mart. I have dealt with the seller and can tell you he is a good guy. Not sure if it is still available but I can email you his email address, if you would like to make any inquiries. Here is my original alert, although the CAM is closed, it should still get you to the ad for the Peach: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/137648.aspx
  7. I have experienced the same "fatigue" that you are describing with my Klipsch (KHorns and Heresy IIs) when ever I have driven them with SS. Your Pre, Amp, and CDP are all very nice pieces but I think (just my opinion) they would fall into the neutral / accurate category vs. the warmer / musical side of things. For me, tubes have eliminated fatigue on all but the worst quality recordings in my collection. I know you said you are not prepared to wade into the glass pool but I think you should at least take a step off the sand and stick your toe in... find a buddy with a tube amp and give it a try and see if it suites your ears better.
  8. No, I do not have access to a tube tester and ya, those 100 hours were only driven on Sunday... by his grandmother [8-)] I think I will hold off on new tubes until the new amp arrives and then get a feel for the sound with the OEM tubes first.
  9. thebes... You are thebest! And you did not even spank me for not using the "search"... double thank you [Y] Some very good reading, I have a line on a local quad of Shuguang Treasure series KT88-Z (B Grade). The guy is asking $280, and says they have about 100 hour on them.
  10. Hey Guys, What new production KT88 are you guys liking? Gold Lion KT88... "The Winged "C" (SED) KT88... Shuguang Treasure series KT88-Z... [^o)] .
  11. Hey 99, Here is a link to a thread I started before I changed my room to just about the exact layout you are going with. LINK I found the long wall set-up to be MUCH nicer for 2 channel listening, but a bit of a trade off for HT duties. For me, the long wall provides a much wider soundstage but the rear channels are limited for the surround effects. On my original set-up when using the short wall, I was able to have the surrounds (Heresys) back behind the main listening positions by about 3-4 feet and this gave a much nicer depth to the rear effects. I am more critical about 2 channel music so I can live with this trade off... however it is still not too bad for movies.
  12. I can strongly recommend the station I listen to while I am at work... http://www.radioparadise.com/ They call themselves an eclectic station, playing anything and everything form Bach to Wilco. But the bulk of the music has a roots type feel to it, very well suited to my musical tastes.
  13. Hey Tracking Angle, Just noticed this ad on AGon: Link Do not know anything about it, just remembered your thread here and thought it might be of interest. I, like Marvel am using a 2A3 SET (Wright Mono4s) but just recently picked up a Wyred 4 Sound ST-500 (250 wpc ICE amp). The SET amps are my fav. but at 4-5 wpc will not bring the house down... the W4S has a different sound and must be handled with care as it can definitely rock the foundations.
  14. Hey Russ, I don't know if you saw this thread that I started last week, as you will notice I have not had any responses via the thread but I did get a couple PMs and several opinions via other venues. After reading a few mainstream reviews along with as many board reviews that I could find, I decided to try one of the W4S amps... ST-500 I am currently using a JM Peach II with a pair of Wright Mono4s (2A3 SET) and was looking to add a higher output amp to swap in and out once in a while with my KHorns. I am pretty happy with the JM/Wright sound but wanted to have the option of switching in a different flavor from time to time. So far I have preferred all the tube amps that I have tried over any of the few SS amps that I have tried. The ST-500 has an ETA of next Monday, I will be sure to post my observations here after I have given it ample break in time.
  15. Hey Guys, I had a JD-100 with the Underwood mini-mod and was very happy with the player and probablly made a mistake selling it... Wanted to try SACD so I sold it to buy a Sony ES-9100 SACD player, I feel the Jolida sounded much better than what I am getting out of red book with the Sony. As to Wally's 3rd party modifier, that would be The Parts Connexion, which for those who do not know is run by Chris Johnson who was the owner of Sonic Frontiers. I never compared my mini-mod to a stock JD-100 so I can not say how much the mod did for the sound but I do know that The Parts Connextion does know it's way around tubed HiFi equipment.
  16. Has anybody tried any of the W4S amps with their Heritage Klipsch? I just came across this brand and have read a few of the reviews that have peeked my interest. It seems they compare very favorably to some of the higher priced ICE offerings... Bel Canto, H2O, etc. I am not sure if this type of amp would be good for "my" ear as I have preferred tubes on my KHorns so far, although the reviews all mention extremely low noise floors with very good dynamics.
  17. Hey Jim, I just noticed these over on CAM. They look to be strictly the Type A version but the price seems fair. If the caps were not already done on my KHorns I would have probably snagged them.
  18. Oh ya, I forgot where I live... -11c and flurries today. [N] But for those 2 weeks of summer, we would be rock'n [ip]
  19. dtel, I am not sure I want to know how (good) they sound as I do not have a spot for them in the house. [^o)] Although they would make nice background music around the pool next summer [:S]
  20. Ya, they don't look bad at all. I am guessing for the $900 asking price that these would be a great pick-up. My buddy's Model 19s sound very nice and from what I have read (I have never heard VOTs) these guys are suppose to be the cat's @$$ of the vintage Altecs.
  21. I would be very tempted [6] to pick these up: http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/154444-altec_voice_of_theatre_a7_speakers_/
  22. Hey Yukon, Here is a shameless plug for a HH Scott 299D that I have listed in the Garage Sale section: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/125875.aspx It was completely rebuilt by Craig in August and I have been using it with my Klipschorns with very nice results. I have tried both SS and tubes with my KHorns, and for my ear, tubes are a much better listen. I also have a pair of Heresy IIs that I have used the 299D with and they are also a very good combo... they can rock! Before I picked up the Scott I had a pair of 45 SET amps which did a very nice job on the KHorns but when paired up on the Heresy IIs... [|-)] they did not wake up. I am guessing you would have similar results with the Almarro.
  23. That's odd, I always thought a CBR was a Honda... As shown here with a special factory finish:
  24. Anyways, give my link a look and maybe do a few searches and see what the other members think about how Heritage go with NOS Valve Scotts.
