  1. I have heard good things about the outlaw recievers, preamps and amps. I am told they can be bright sounding. I have several friends who believe the pioneer elite is the best quality for the money. I have an Onkyo that I have no audio complaints with, but the HDMI switching with my projector causes me problems. I have an 8 year old HK in my bedroom that sounds good but the setting menus drive me crazy. Good luck.
  2. Does anyone believe in spikes? I have a carpeted floor on cement. I have used spikes for my vandersteens with good results. I think I will build a base like the Heresy and paint it black. Also trying to decide between cherry or walnut for the veneer replacment.
  3. I have recently found the sonic pleasure of old AR and Thorens turntables. They sound great they can be had for reasonable money. Some say they rival $2,000 and $3,000 set ups. Add a Rega RB250 to an old AR or Thorens. If you are not happy with the result they re-sell very well. The base tables can be had for $200-$500, the tonearm for $275. The arm boards are pretty easy to make or purchase. You could buy one all refurbished as well, check out www.vinylnirvana.com and www.theanalogdept.com. I am a wood worker of sorts and can make armboards if you have trouble finding what you want.
  4. Any advice on the best bank for the buck upgrades I should include in my restoration? Thanks
  5. Thanks for the detailed instructions. I did take the back off of one of the speakers to look for anything obvious. All connections were snug and looked clean. It seems as though I might have been the first one inside these. No marks on or around the screws and the back was very tight. I will try the battery trick when I get home on Thursday and post. Does anyone have any experience moving from the quartets to the cornwalls? What should I expect? Should I change out the binding posts? I saw some ebay adapters for banana plugs. Does anyone have any experience with these adapters (http://cgi.ebay.com/ADAPTERS-MCINTOSH-FISHER-EICO-Old-AMP-BANANA-PLUG-SPADE_W0QQitemZ370055151825QQihZ024QQcategoryZ39783QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)?
  6. I have a pair of Quartets that I really enjoy with my tube amp. Because I enjoy the quartets, I could not resist getting a 1985 pair or Cornwalls that I plan to refurbish and re-veneer. I notice that both tweeter are not audible. I thought it was strange that both would be out. I would think that one would go before the other. Do the crossovers fail over time? I know just enough about electronics to be dangerous. Any suggestions on how to diagnose to determine what to repair/replace? Also these were oiled oak that were allowed to dry out. Some long chip sections of the narrow front edge banding are missing. The veneer appears to have a reinforcing backing. Any trick to removing the veneer? Once I figure out the upload process I will post some pictures. Thanks.
  7. Just finished a rebuild/modification on a TD 150 Mk I. What a nice turntable. I added a Rega 300 arm, a Dynavector 10x5 cartridge, dampening material and an MDF base with tenderfoot spikes. Makes a great team with my 80's vintage Klipsch Quartets.
