  1. You need a Monster 1000 series subwoofer cable, because it will give you "deeper, tighter bass". Or at least that's what the package says... so it must be true. [8-|] Like others on the forum, I love monoprice.com. I'm using their 12ft high-quality digital audio/video coaxial RCA. It's an awesome deal at $3.87. http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10236&cs_id=1023603&p_id=2682&seq=1&format=2
  2. Heard them at the '08 pilgrimage.I would love to hear them again. Absolutely amazing.
  3. Whoa, whoa there Mr. RF62, give us latecomers some time to enjoy our Reference IV set-ups before they become yesterday's news! []
  4. It looks as though he inverted the woofer. To what effect, I'm not sure. DIY I assume?
  5. Youthman, looks like your theater turned out to be completely AWESOME! It looks absolutely fantastic. It's great to see what some crafty shopping and bargain-hunting can turn into. I'm glad it turned out so nice for you. Enjoy!
  6. Nice to see you posting here Chris... I have never heard of the other brand you mentioned until just now. Having tried the Image line and owning the Custom-3s, I'll do my best to answer some of your questions... I don't believe that there is anything covering the tip that leads to the driver, at least not that I can see as I glance at my pair. Typically any waxy build up I get accumulates on the tips themselves which can be easily cleaned off using the handy-dandy included cleaning tool. If the good Professor Thump notices this thread perhaps he will chime in, as he was the one who helped engineer these headphones. As far as having them jostling about in your pocket, I always always always keep mine in their also handy-dandy included carrying case, for added safety. I usually don't tend to notice the microphonics on my pair, and can only really hear the wires dangling when there is nothing playing in them. Any time something is playing the sound is so completely immersive that it's hard to notice anything else. I highly doubt you'll be dissapointed with the Klipsch headphone line... Take a look at the Custom-3s while you're at it. I can't speak highly enough of them. The sound quality is just totally awesome.
  7. I have tried time and time again to get the "perfect fit" with the Klipsch tips and have failed. Don't get me wrong, they're very comfortable, but they just don't stay comfortable for long periods of time. Other people have said that they are comfortable for hours at a time, just not the case for me. Anyway, I have tried Comply Foam tips (the T-100 size for custom-3s) and they feel much MUCH nicer. They almost literally "melt" in your ears and you forget you are wearing them and can do so for indefinite periods of time. The only downside (and it is a biggie) are that they get gross and ear-waxy( even with obsessive cleaning) and start to fall apart in usually less than a month, and I have to throw them away. Of course, YMMV. Looking at comply foam's website right now, I notice that they have a new "Tx-100 with integrated wax guard" out now along with the "T-100 classic".... hmmm... looks interesting.
  8. nymelky, that is nice. Really, really NICE. How do you like your MFW-15?
  9. Hey, I read them everyday as well! I even comment..... occasionally.
  10. I have no opinion about cables, but I'm going to have to disagree about the cost-to-function ratio deficit on the Bugatti:
  11. I hadn't heard about those models being discontinued... In my experience, all soundbars sound TERRIBLE. Even the $1600 Yamaha I heard had no output, only marginally improved clarity over regular TV speakers. Totally unsuitable for both movies and music, imo. On the other hand, the CS-700 system, which I heard at the '08 pilgrimage, was quite nice. Suitable for those looking for decent HT performance but just can't stomach running wires or for whatever other reason. I didn't get to hear any music on it, though, so I can't comment.
  12. Wow, Arky... I hope that wasn't a "professional" firm...
  13. Hmm... this is giving me a lot to chew on... So you're saying that the "Carmina Burana" DVD with the nude people contains a performance of the Ninth? Who is this Von K and what is his problem? I know so little about classical recordings and conductors!
  14. I don't see how in the world anyone can attack the OP for what he wrote. Sheesh! Simply brutal. Again, not focusing on politics, but I would consider myself very conservative and I think Jim had a great observation... And who says our view of "what is rich" should be relative? To a vast majority of the world (picture a starving Kenyan child for instance), someone making $30,000 a year renting a two room apartment is living in a palace. Someone grossing nearly $21,000 a month living in a 2500 sq ft home simply shouldn't complain. Overtaxed? Sure. Overworked? Probably. They have every right to complain. But they really don't have the room...
  15. Thanks for the responses, gents. Larry, I'm interested primarily in CDs (or SACDs) and DVDs. I'm just beginning my music-collecting journey, but I do plan to get into LPs eventually. As greg928gts mentioned, Symphony #9 is by far one of my most beloved classical pieces, and both versions I have on CD are TERRIBLE! I'm also looking for Symphony #5, #6, Piano Sonata #14 and of course "Eroica." But there are no Beethoven pieces I dislike... so tell me what you guys think. Currenty listening to Symphony #7 on the $2 CD... it sounds like it was played through a Gameboy speaker and recorded with a Fisher-Price tape recorder and then converted to CD.... YIKES!
  16. This is to Mallete, LarryC and others who are in the know about good recordings- I've been searching for some decent recordings of this great composer, and have had very little luck. Just yesterday I found a CD called "The Best of Beethoven" from a company called "Madacy Special Products"- TWO CDs for just $2.... it should have been an indication. The first track, symphony no. 5 literally sounds a 96kbps or lower mp3 file. I've heard many a bad MP3 and this is among the worst. A complete waste. I've bought some Telarc SACDs from Berkshire Record Outlet's sale and was very impressed. I bought Copland's Appalachian Spring as well as Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique. Listening to just the Red Book version, they sound GREAT. I'd like to find some recordings of Beethoven with the same quality. I have another "Beethovens Best Hits" CD from some no-name outlet and it doesn't sound much better. Not terrible, but nowhere near those recordings I mentioned. Any suggestions?
  17. I also agree with you, Jim. I'm obviously no expert, but you often see people who make above 100K stretching themselves very thin, and then proclaiming that they "are just getting by." I'll bet that any of the people in the article could dig their way out of their percieved financial hole by doing a little economizing and re-looking at things with some old-fashioned common sense. My favorite little excerpt: "Her family of five would like more room than they have in their 2,500-square-foot home, yet they can't afford anything larger." Awww... how sad. This reminds me of a story about the young daughter of a wealthy bank president... The teacher in her third grade class gave them an assignment to write a story about someone who was poor. The little girl got to work right away, and finished early. She gave her essay to the teacher, who read it to the class. It began: "Once upon a time there was a very poor man, who lived with his very poor wife. His butler was very poor, and his gardener was very poor, and his chef was very poor. Even his nanny was very poor!"
  18. Slawre, nice to see another fellow college-age Klipsch fan. How does that Diamond audio sub sound?
  19. I agree with your sentiments there, Roger. However, I really prefer the casual look and feel of your theater as opposed to all of the "Movie Palaces" like your friend's. The little info section at the bottom of the page says his speakers are Genelec... what's up with that?
  20. I started out using the 14 ga regular wire, which gave me the "comfortable" listening level. I then switched to the Monster cable, where I had the apparent decrease in volume. I couldn't pick out any other real differences, I consider my self pretty tin-earred and like I said, it was just a quickie little test. Nothing scientific. Speakerfritz, I'm not exactly sure what you were getting at there. Are you saying their so called "flux tube" should produce results, or not?
  21. Most of you already know that I am not a Monster cable fan, but that I did at one time "drink the kool-aid" and purchased a few of their higher-end products. Well last week I decided that, heck, I had a spool of their XPHP-CI speaker wire, so why not hook it up and do a little demo. I went over to my RB-61s which were set up for some 2-channel listening to my Yamaha RX-V1800 and switched out the Monster cable in place of some plain-jane 14 gauge wire. Immediately, I noticed a BIG difference in the sound... It was was much, MUCH quieter. Basically, I had to take the volume from a comfortable -20 dB listening level on the Yamaha to -9 dB to get the same 90ish dB output (using my handy new Radio Shack SPL meter!). It was almost as if the RB-61s just lost a good chunk of their sensitivity... Fast foward one week, and I decided to perform a little impromtu surgery on the Monster wire, to see what was up with it. What I found was this: You might be able to see the "time correct winding" sitting on the outside of the inner-insulators. It is basically a piece of string, like you would pull off of your shirt. After cutting into the inner-insulators, I found this: Inside the wire is the "magnetic flux tube" which is a thick, long piece of rubbery plastic. It makes the wire appear much thicker from the outside, but as you can see the actual conductors on the inside are about equivalent to 14 ga wire. Could this be what is creating the apparent "lack of efficiency"? Is Monster cable really that devious/inept? Thoughts?
  22. I like all the new blogs, although I have them all in an RSS feed and they can be hard to follow (random disappearances and such). Other than that, I think they are great insights.
