  1. "Where can you get a Paradigm 2200 for $550?" Grrr, where did i get that price from? Hmmm must've been an auction... or maybe i'm just talkin smack! Hmm, just looked at the comparison chart of subs on the SVS page - http://www.svsubwoofers.com/subcomparo.htm - didn't realize the Paradigm was so close to the SVS (well, the single anyway!). Now if i could just find that price again... Oh yea, if you look at the FAQ page on SVS, there are a whole load of suggestions for heavy bass playing. -Rich
  2. OK, i'm goin bonkers here tryin to decide on a sub. The rest of my system consists of KLF-30's, KLF-C7, RS-3's, Yamaha RX-V3000. So, i've got it narrowed down now, and i'm lookin for opinions on these, but if anyone has any comments regarding a manufacturer or a better model in the same price range i'd like to hear it too. I'm tryin to stick to around $500. %70 HT %30 music, but i want something that can keep up with the KLF's. Plaster cracking factor is secondary - if i wanted muddy rumblings that pissed off the neighbors i would drive a "hoopty" M&K V-75 MKII ~ $450 (MX-700?) Paradigm 2200 ~ $550 Velodyne CT-120 ~ $400 Polk PSW650 ~ $450 NHT Subone ~ $500 HSU VTF2 ~ $450 Energy e:XL-s12 ~ $500 Also found an auction for a HSU 1225 with an NHT MA-1A amp for ~ $400 plus shipping (slightly used) Plan B: Save up for an SVS or NHT Subtwo. Thanks folks!!! -Rich This message has been edited by rhawki on 12-26-2001 at 04:50 AM
  3. Here's a quick comparison chart from Yamaha http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/compare/recvr_4.htm Looks like there is a diff in the DAC's and a couple other things like pre-outs and 5 vs 6 ch stereo. -Rich
  4. Ack! Screws through the grill, that picture is painful... You should go back and slug the guy just on principal! Good stuff though! -Rich
  5. Well, i can't say much either way regarding the Quintets as i don't know much about them, and have never "auditioned" them, but i LOVE my RX-V3000. When i was looking for a new receiver, i first got a Denon 4800 (which in retrospect was probably a bad unit) but it sounded horrible on my KLF-30's, so i started looking at Yamaha and Marantz from another shop. I started with the 1000 and ended up going back and paying the difference for the 3000. It's such a warm clear sound at any volume, which is why i can never understand why people say Yamaha's are harsh when teamed with Klipsch. As far as i'm concerned, the 3000 blew the 4800 away, it just doesn't look as cool. Anyway, i would say that's a fantastic price (this stuff's almost as bad as computer equip. for depreciation) and would definatly take it for the couple hundred extra! The only caveat is the DPLII and DTS-ES. Either Yamaha would probably be a good match for the Reference. On the other hand, the 1200 looks decent and has all the new "do-hickies". I'm not up on there new stuff though. Hey, look, it's got a new European Hall DSP! Sorry, this probably didn't help much... -Rich
  6. I saw a few set's of Klipsch on Audiogon a couple days ago. LaScalas, Belles, some rb & rf, kg-4, klf, CF4(?) Anyway, will keep an eye out for ya... -Rich This message has been edited by rhawki on 12-21-2001 at 02:10 AM
  7. For what it's worth, my girlfriends Sony (relatively new) does the same thing, i've just learned to tune it out in quiet parts of movies... -Rich
  8. Vertical vinyl hanging blinds. The long 6" wide strips that go ceiling to floor, ya know? %100 light block when you want, or twist them open a little (or a lot) for light. -Rich
  9. They had a few on Ubid too. A black and a couple Oaks i think... -Rich
  10. You don't happen to have a Nextel or be near a Nextel repeater or something? My i1000 always makes strange noises on any speaker i'm near - similar to the sound you describe. I can always tell a split second before it rings cuz i can hear it on my desktop speakers before it rings - kinda cool, but if it's doing that to speakers, what's i doing to my head!? -Rich
  11. Aside from having to check the DVD player settings, you will probably also have to go into the audio setup from the main menu of the movie and specify DTS over DD. Most movies default to DD 5.1. Then again, maybe your DVD player or reciever is hosed. Try another DVD player on the H/K, or take your DVD player to a buddies house and try it out on his reciever. -Rich
  12. I love the way my Yamaha RX-V3000 sounds with the KLF-30's/C7/RS-3's. Tried a couple other recievers and ended up with this one. The only hum i had was from a halogen floor light. As soon as i moved it away from the AV stuff everything was good. Typically the people that post about hums have a power problem (dirty/ground loop) -Rich
  13. I've always enjoyed this board and thought it to be quite civil. You want hostility, go hang out at www.audioreview.com Now those guys know how to flame What can i say, i'm just not a flamer! If morale continues to decline the beatings will resume!!! -Rich
  14. OK, i would expect to see this on chevelles.com, but not Klipsch.com! Anyway, higher octane gas burns slower which is what eliminates the knock. You're giving the crank just a fraction more time to get around to where the piston is starting on the downstroke. Otherwise you have to retard the timing, which is what computers/knock sensors do. You can drop a match on some high octane race fuels without igniting them - like deisel, they have to be compressed to ignite. Never heard of it burning hotter though... will ask elsewhere and see what i can find out. -Rich Oh yea KLF-30 mains KLF-C7 center RS-3 surrounds Yamaha RX-V3000 Toshiba Theaterview 50" Toshiba DVD JVC VCR Sony satelite Monster Power 3500 Misc Monster Cable '74 Chevelle/Malibu
  15. check here for the Quake and Titan subs http://www.audioc.com/ Velodynes are good, and price depends on what you get. The CT-120 is a "common" sub from them that seems to get a lot of good press for $400-$500. Still can't decide between that and the Quake. Even though the Quake is 2 8" woofers, it will supposedly thunder like the Velodyne and is a lot tighter for music. You can catch a few reviews of these at audioreview, just don't go into the message boards unless you like to fight... -Rich
  16. All i gotta say is, 52" projection or 32" Wega for the same price. It was NO problem for me to decide. I still LOVE my projection! But to each his own... When i go over to my friends house where he has a Wega, i just can't believe that that tiny little thing cost MORE than my projection. They've gotten a lot better than they used to be. I've never had a problem with seeing the picture except from extream angles that you would never watch from anyway. I'll never go back! Actually, it's kinda funny when you get one home, for like a month i would sit down "Goddamn that's a big tv!" I love it when people come over too - "Oh my god! That things huge!" Why, thank you... Oh yea, Gran Tourismo on projection - Da Best! Can't wait for GT3 to get here!!! -Rich
  17. Like i said previously, a couple more -Rich
  18. OK, here's the pics... You can see (hopefully) where the glue held and didn't (top_rt - clean seperation; btm_left - minor carnage where the glue held). In the next post, there's a closeup of the crossover, and all the pieces laid out. Hope they made it! Will pop one up of the whole setup soon. -Rich This message has been edited by rhawki on 07-04-2001 at 07:19 AM
  19. I hear ya HornEd. What the F has become of cust. service lately??? I'm almost surprised when i come across it anymore. I guess the chains feel they make enough between them they can afford there bad attitudes. The little guys seem to be more accomodating. Years ago, i went to a local shop just to look around, and they had Forte II's which were my first experience with Klipsch, and hooked me for good. When i went back not to long ago, i was sad to find that they didn't carry Klipsch anymore, because they guy that buys for them is an old fart that got a bug up is @ss, and decided to punish the local community by not carrying Klipsch anymore (can you feel the bitterness?) They were now pushing Mirage (so-so), AR (some nice stuff) and NHT (power hungry). Anyway, i bolted for Richmond, where i found a great shop (Audio Express) where i ended up getting my KLF-30's, RS-3's, and C7 for close to internet prices. Unfortunatly, the guy that sold me that stuff recently retired, but it was nice to find a shop where i could wander in, under no pressure, load up there CD player with whatever i wanted, and blast away. They also turned me onto my Yamaha (RX-V3000), and with this setup, i couldn't be happier!!! Good luck in your persuit of a new Klipsch store! -Rich
  20. "I don't know if I would use Liquid Nails." Actually, that's what Klipsch told me to use when i called. Used a sub-flooring Liquid Nails and so far it's holding really well... I was actually gonna use Gorilla Glue, but i was afraid it would dry hard, and thought the little bit of pliability that LN has would be better. Will post the pics when i get home this morning... -Rich This message has been edited by rhawki on 07-03-2001 at 03:04 AM
  21. Well, i had the dreaded loose cabinet problem with one of my 30's, so while taking the speakers out to get inside with some Liquid Nails, i noticed the top and whole right side had come loose. At this point i started pulling and prying, and pretty soon had the whole face off. Anyway, while i had it off i decided to take some pic's of the insides. If anyone's interested (???), and there are no objections from Klipsch, i'll post a couple pics. One of them has a good shot of the crossover too if that's ok to post... -Rich This message has been edited by rhawki on 07-02-2001 at 06:14 AM
  22. OK, not that i frequent CC, but i was in there last week picking up some Monster Cable while waiting for my C7 to arrive (made it in one piece through UPS!!!), and took a peak at the price tag for the Velodyne CT-120. The sales guy noticed me looking and we BS'd for a couple minutes about speakers. He told me that they were gonna stop carrying the higher priced stuff in stores, but they could still order it for people that wanted it. WTF??? He said the reasoning was that people that were gonna buy that stuff had already heard it and/or already knew what they wanted. Well, if that's the case, i'd go get it off the internet for several hundred less. What's the point of going to CC at that point??? He didn't agree with the idea - when he told me he just looked at me and rolled his eyes. Sounds like a bad move to me - you're just encouraging people to go to Best Buy and make a "worst buy" - Bose. -Rich
  23. This kinda brings up an interesting point. First off, as Seb said "people are not often willing to drive for hours looking in every audio/video store to find the best speakers for their needs" When it came time for me to get speakers, i made a bee line for Richmond - about 90 miles to the closest place that had Klipsch. And then had to go back again with a cargo van when it came time to pick them up (the girlfriend wasn't to hip to KLF-30's on the roof of her Saturn - go figure) That said, i also like it when people ask me what kinda speakers i have. "Klipsch"... "huh?" Rarely do i get someone who says, "oh yea, those are great" or "I've heard of/listened to those" I usually enjoy explaining about Klipsch to people, rather than saying, oh yea, i've got CerwinVega's, or Polk's or something common. I'm curious though, what kinda reaction to you all get??? -Rich
  24. quote: Originally posted by Mikekid: Geezzzz...Here goes the Yamaha bashing again Mike The Yamaha Underdog................... I'm on the Yamaha bandwagon with ya! LOVE my RX-V3000!!! Didn't buy it for the bells and whistles (i.e. DSP modes) There are only like 3 modes i ever use. Got it cuz it sounds GREAT with the KLF-30/C7/RS-3 setup. Compared it to Marantz and Denon and still kept it. To each his own... -Rich
  25. Yea, Mid-Fi is a loose term. Hey no offense to those with the older Kenwood stuff - some of there older equipment i've seen seems well built... But the newer stuff is really under engineered if you look inside. Lots of ribbon cable and small capacitors/transformers. I read a really cool article somewhere on the net about a study that was done on some of the major brands and how the internals are done. Really interesting to see the pics of how the different companies make there stuff. The big guys like Onkyo, Yamaha, etc put monster capacitors and transformers in and use fairly heavy guage cable, hence the weight. I could pick up my Kenwood reciever and twirl it on my finger... You get what you pay for, but like i said before, my Kenwood stuff from the 80's is still goin strong (as a secondary system of course) "can't really make a blanket statement for all brands for all eras shockie (well, 'cept for bose). " -Rich
