  1. I've been all over looking for a program that will allow me to password protect certain folders and files at my discretion. Does such a thing exist?
  2. I am attempting to build a computer for the first time and have some questions. I would also like opinions on what i am planning to buy so far. Pentium 4 2ghz 512 cache 478 - $197 VIA P4XB-SA m.b. - $74 Dane-elec DDR 512 SDRAM - $102 Maxtor Quietdrive 40 GB - $78 MSI Geforce 4 64 mb - $68 S.B. live 5.1 - $32 sony floppy - $15 Antec 330w case - $95 Creative modem f/d/v - $20 *note - i'm not sure which burner yet Questions 1. Are these decent prices? 2. Is that motherboard going to work for the memory and processor i described? 3. Do these parts all look compatible? 4, I guess i need a heatsink, what should i get? let me know if you need more info. Please let me know what you think and feel free to make suggestions. I can't afford to mess this up. thanks
  3. A friend of mine is looking to buy their first DVD player. I have been looking at the Sony DVP-NS500V and the Hitachi DVP315U. They both seem to fit the budget. My friend has not HT and will be using it with a 4:3 analog tv. I wouldn't expect to see major upgrades any time soon. any other options? opinions of these two? Thanks
  4. the reason hk receivers only have five channels of amplification is because it is impossible to fit that many high current channels in a reasonably sized box. think about that the next time you see a 6, 7 or 8 channel receiver pushing between 100 and 170 watts per channel. simple physics
  5. I am doing a paper on the history of HT. If anyone knows of a current source of information, that would be great. Otherwise, would you like to describe your progression (if you have been doing this for more than 10 years). I know there isn't much of a history before the 80's, but i want to gather as much info as i can. I think one of the first forms was quadraphonic sp? thanks
  6. I have the exact same setup and have definitely not experienced the same thing. Try putting them in the corners about 6 to 12 inches from the walls. Just play around with them, it should workout fine.
  7. Just jumped on board at the polk bb to see what was up. Not a very intelligent bunch over there. Some folks seem to know what they're talking about, but all too many seemed to be very ignorant and a little too on edge. I read through and had to laugh at much of what was said there. makes me feel pretty good about own little home here.
  8. Anyone who thinks we would all be better off without unions is an idiot. That point is not debateable. History, and common human mentality show us quite clearly that society is not better off without unions. On the other hand, anyone who thinks unions are currently perfect, are equally ignorant. they are clearly not as efficient and effective as they could (should) be. Personally, i would rather be paying the extra small percentage of the price knowing that the people who manufactured the product aren't working 14 hour days, six days a week for $5 a day. come to think of it, that probably is the case for my soccer ball and running shoes.
  9. wow, thanks guys. feel free to keep it coming. if it's easier, my email is foster_andr@bentley.edu
  10. the sf2s do sound a little "smoother" but will not give you the lifelike sound or volume of the rf3. If you can swing the cost of the rf3 and matching center, it is definitely worthwhile in my opinion.
  11. Is there any way to get one of the upcoming PWK biograpies thru klipsch? I am attempting to do a paper for my upper level history class on klipsch, a reflection of the industry. I really need to get my hands on one of these books, i don't even need it to be signed, although that would be great. I just want a copy. Is this possible??? I am very open to ideas here. Also, any other sources for the history of klipsch than the website? There isn't a whole lot of info there. Thanks
  12. I paid $650 for my rf3s last summer. I would pay a little more for the 2's, but realize that the difference in sound is not going to be very much. I think you are paying mainly for the monster name, not added quality. edit: that number is in US $, just convert for canadian. i'm not sure if they cost more simply because they are shipped to another country This message has been edited by Foost on 03-20-2002 at 05:56 PM
  13. I have had great luck with my HK AVR500 and my reference speakers. I like the "warm" sound of the HK stuff. I didn't like the yamaha "sound" and i prefered the HK sound over the denon, but that's just me.
  14. Ok, signed or not, i just want a copy. can anyone do this for me? I want to learn as much as I want it as a piece of history. Any help out there? email me at foster_andr@bentley.edu if you can get me a copy. thanks.
  15. I have to chime in here. I'm live in maine, not far from portland and I too frequent New England HiFi. I have formed a pretty good relationship with Andy over the past few years. He and the other folks at NE hifi are the best I have ever met. Those Heresys he sold for $200 were actually turned in the week before by a guy who bought them from Andy 20 years ago. The owner and his wife bought a new house and she wanted them out. Reluctantly, the guy traded them in. 3 days later, Andy gets a call from the wife, asking him to please not sell them to anyone as her husband had "expressed his undying desire to hold on to them" He will be picking them back up in a few days. The $200 is for some minor superficial repairs Andy made while they were briefly his. Great store, great guy. by the way, i listened to those '74 Heresy's this weekend and i loved them. They were the first I have heard of the heritage line and the sound was incredible. I am definitely hooked, there is just that small matter of money..... 16. 1. must be five disc 2. Must play cdrs (HK DVD50 out of the running) 3. Progressive scan would be great 4. Zoom would be great 5. around $500 is doable NAD has one in their TR series that I really like, but it's a little pricey. anything else out there?
  17. I would love to attend, but due to cost constraints and school issues (I'm a junior at Bentley) I won't be able to make it. Is there any chance someone could get me a signed copy? I would pay for the service. I would love to have autographed copy. This would also go very well with my current research project on loudpeaker history. Thanks as always Andy feel free to email me at foster_andr@bentley.edu if you're interested in doing me this favor. I won't forget it.
  18. Thanks for the great site. I am looking into some of the noted resources now.
  19. I am researching the history of speaker technology for my "history of American technology" class and am looking for resources (books, papers, websites etc) I currently need more of the earlier history as I have a decent grasp on the last couple of decades, but any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much, Andy
  20. My hand slipped while moving my rf3 and it fell a couple of inches onto the front left foot. the plastic has cracked and i need a new foot. Can i get these from klipsch? I hope so, I would hate to have to spend another $650 to get new feet.
  21. Not to discourage you, but is it an older/cheaper player? A friend of mine was given a really inexpensive player a few years ago and it did the same thing. you cold hear the disc spinning and it made a noticeable noise every time it switched chapters. I was not able to fix it other than to put it in a case with a door. Good luck
  22. Can i get some details on this material? Also looking for details on the tweeter/horn used in my rf3 Thanks
  23. I'm still not sure where to find a 120VAC to 12VDC converter... any help here?
  24. well, the sub is an a perfect enclosure for its specs and the amp is of a higher quality than most low end receivers (sony, panasonic and such) so I think i'll go ahead and give it a try.
  25. I have an Alpine V12 amp sitting at home as well as a 10" kicker solo baric in a box. Just for fun I would like to use them in my room. I know it will probably sound awful, but i hate to see them just sitting there. What do I need? What will the difference be in power quality/amount? The amp is 45x4 + 100x1 rms. I can't remember the required power level or what fuse is in it (i'm currently two states away at school). I'm assuming i need a power converter. Any help or suggestions out there?
