  1. There are some factors to take into account when you look at overall gain. How large of a screen? How is the black level of the projector being used? The VW60 is not noted for being overly bright. It is supposed to have a very good black level. So on a larger screen 110"+ you would want to go for a fairly high gain screen. I've never seen anything near 6:1 (1.6:1 perhaps), but with a large screen you would want to look at something like a Carada Brillant White, Stewart Ultra Matte or something similar (~1.5 gain). For a smaller screen 100" or less you can get away with a more modest gain (~1.2). High gain screens have a lot of "pop", but keep in mind that an overly bright image will become fatiguing with extended viewing. Personally if you can afford it, I would seriously look at an anamorphic lens and a 2.35:1 scope screen. If the darn lenses weren't so expensive I'd have one myself.
  2. Correct. The HDMI output (monitor out) will need to be hooked into the TV. Alternatively, if you are not using the receiver for HDMI switching, you can use another output (component, composite) for the receiver's OSD and use the HDMI for the video source of your choosing. Otherwise (monitor) out to the TV all other HDMI sources to the HDMI ins.
  3. Well you could try to frame in the speakers and use acoustically transparent cloth to make it look clean. With the new lossless audio on Blu Ray/HD DVD home theater can use all the fidelity you can give it. I'm amazed at how sweet some of this sounds. From the Gilmour Blu Ray to the instrumental Bond theme on Casino Royale (the Cornell track is great as well) I'm constantly amazed. So don't build a home theater room only to downgrade. You'll regret it.
  4. Just a bump to see if anyone has an opinion on using KT-LCR's as rears for the CF-1. They look on paper to be a good match.
  5. If you need analog outputs and don't wish to wait for the profile 2.0 players, I'd suggest looking at the Panasonic 10/10A. It decodes everything but DTS-MA through it's 7.1 outputs. I do wish it did, but if I'm going to be stuck listening to one legacy codec, better that it is DTS @ 1.5Mbps than any of the Dolby codecs. Used examples can be had on Ebay quite reasonably (I got mine for <$300). My buddies and I just watched "David Gilmour - Remeber that Night" on Blu Ray last night and the 5.1 Dolby TrueHD 24/48 lossless track was truly 5 star. It's a great player to hold you over until profile 2.0 players are not being sold at a premium. The Samsung players are very reasonably priced, but a look on AVS forum will show you that they seem to be having many problems playing all of the newest discs. This seems to be firmware related and unfortunately Samsung doesn't seem to be keeping up. A shame really since their players have a very good price/features ratio. The PS3 is great player if you don't mind it's lack of an IR port, lack of analog audio support and inability to bitstream the codecs. The other complaints I hear is that it is noisy and produces a lot of heat. I haven't owned one, so I can't say if it really is as much of a problem as some owners make it out to be.
  6. If this what I am thinking of, the presence speakers were an extra output for full range speakers in addition to the normal left and right. The only time I heard it, it didn't seem to offer any real improvements and added additional processing to the signal.
  7. I would also imagine that at least one of the more expensive players will have analog outputs. A big deal to those of use with quality audio gear that does not handle HDMI.
  8. I am looking for a bit of advice about my HT setup. Currenty I am using CF-1's for mains, a KLF C7 for the center and KG 2.5's for rears. The CF1's and C7 match wonderfully in the front, but the KG 2.5's just don't seem to mesh with the fronts well. I'm not really interested in a dipole rear speaker. I have stands for the rear channels and putting towers back there and attempting to get the tweeters anywhere near ear level simply doesn't seem viable. So what bookshelf would be the best matchup? I was looking in the discountinued speakers and the KT-LCR seems like it would be the best fit. It has the same tweeter, and was manufactured around the same time. The only concern is that the crossovers from them being THX speakers may make them sound markedly different. And yes, I am aware that the KV4 is the center speaker intended to be mated with the CF1's. But I am very pleased with the C7 and am not looking to replace it.
