  1. TheHK avr 146 will be suitable for now, HK is usually very modest in the wattage rating department which is a good and bad thing, none the less you'll be fine with the 146. If you take a look at actual max power consumption versus what each channel is driven at will give you a little better idea. For example the avr 146 is rated at 30 watts x 5 ch which make for a total of 150 watts. The standby wattages usage is 65 watts so you figure a little more for when the lights are on and what not we'll call it an even 100 watts to run the units DACs and processors. The total power consumption of the AVR 146 is 540 watts max (driven with 5 channels). So take the 540 watts minus the 100 watts to wrong the thing give you a total of 440 watts minus the 30 watts x 5 ch ( 440 - 150 = 290 watts). So on the HK spec sheet there's roughly 290 watts that are unaccounted for. so take the 290 divided by the 5 channels give you about 58 watts more a channel then is actually specd by HK. So while your 2 channel listening is specd at 40 watts x 2 ch is more realistically probably 80 or more. I'm sure someone will chime in andgive some more input and this is all a rough estimate but to show you there is still unaccounted current in the end that is actually being used. Don't be scared of the HK wattage ratings you get good clean power and they sound great with klipsch IMO.
  2. i'm satisfied with them wuzzer, just wasn't sure how it all worked out. Any idea why the CD gets flagged at 5.1 or 7.1 when output in PCM? Like i said before not that it matters but only "why" does it do it. Thanks for all your help and speedy responses wuzzer.
  3. on the onkyo remote i believe it says "display" / "Prev Ch", it's the button just below the " ch +" and "ch -. When in the Reciever mode hit that and it will display info about the source signal on the LED display on the reciever.
  4. I have my ps3 hooked up with hdmi, and yes in the section about sound out, if it's set a 48kHz it's flagged as being 5.1 and if it's upsampled to the 44.1/88.2/176.4 it's flagged at the reciever as being 7.1. I've ran the automatic sound thing on the PS3 and it all shows up properly (as far as supported channels). Would you put in a CD in your PS3 at the 48kHz setting and press the info button on the onkyo remote and see what it's flagged at. The audio quality is good i was just curious how to get it great, maybe a new cd player's soon to be in the mix.
  5. Thanks Mark, that helps, i thought that the PCM was an already converted signal (ie DTS MA and TrueHD come out as MultiCH PCM) then sends it to its respective channel. When I use THE PCM on the PS3 even though its a 2 channel recording it with comes out (flagged) as wither 5.1 or 7.1 depending on the frequency output choosen on the PS3 but will still only play 2ch ( which is only what I want). This is odd as it's flagged as a multich signal and idea about this, not that it's a big deal just don't folllow whats going on. thanks again mark
  6. well modoc that really sucks, I love the way HK sounds with klipsch speakers, unfortunately I had the same probelm with older models of the HK recievers with HDMI. Everything else work compltely fine but the HDMI output. The sources I had connected in to HDMI and then back out from the HK had like sparkles and colors every where but the component stuff worked fine. I tried 3 different HK boxes each time moving up in price until i said "f" it and looked at other stuff. really stinks they haven't fixed the HDMI issue yet. That HDMI feature is a real selling point these days and with out it working properly it's a waste of money. I hope you get it figured out.
  7. The reason I ask is I have an onkyo tx sr 805 with burr brown DACs and want to make sure that the piece of equipment with the better dacs does the conversion work. How do i get it to the reciever with out the other equipment doing any conversion work. If I send it from the PS3 it sends it as LPCM wich means the PS3 is doing the converting of digital to analog, if i send it via xbox 360, also sends it PCM meaning the xbox is converting it again not the reciever. If i use my cd player PD F407 is already analog (red, white , rca) so it's doing the converting meaning my sources are already sending a converted signal to the reciever and the burr browns DACs are doing nothing. Now maybe I have this all wrong and if i do could someone please explain it to me as I want the burr browns to do the DAC (mostly to see if there's a difference in sould quality). -stefan
  8. Just like others have said before ripping your music in a format suitable for you, FLAC LAME OGG what ever you choose and store it on your PC/Server then stream it via a game console, I use my PS3 for a quick access but still prefer CDs. Makes it nice if you cant find an album or particular song you want.
  9. I had a question in regards to DAC's, how do they work and in what applications do they work... for example do DAC's work only in the HDMI, Optical and Coaxial (as these are in my mind digital). Do DACs also work in the older rca cables (red and white). I'm not quite sure I understand. How do analog and digital signals differ in there transfer? and then the decoding/audible response in which we hear. Now I don't mean you have to get down to the electramagnetism that goes on and the transfer to the speakers and get converted to audible sound waves.
  10. I have an onkyo tx sr 805 rated at 130 wp, i have them "bi-amped" and I push them, I think they start to sound better when pushed a little bit extra. At 150 watts rms it would be hard to really push them with that much youd probably be going deaf. On top of that being able to handle dynamics up to 600 watts they're asking to be pushed a little.
  11. RIch Guy is right, I wouldn't part with my RF 5s for any less than than about double that.
  12. Oldtimer, CECAA is correct. I have 2 subs handling different frequencies, 1 sub for LFE and the sunfire HRS 10 in addition to my mains. I get poor bass response out of my room at low levels so it's almost as if the RF 5s don't give out any bass at all. So I use the HRS to help attenuate the higher bass frequencies to help balance the room out. I'm in the process of treating the room just trying to keep up the WAF and not going over board as we will be moving soon.
  13. The only rule in audio is.... "how it sounds to you" you will hear and see this any where and everywhere you read when it comes to audio. As was stated earlier THX standard is to crossover at 80 Hz this takes a load of the reciever and allows it to feed a more steady output to your mains and others speakers. The lower the Hz the lower the sound, the higher the HZ the higher the frequency is. In my experience and depending on the sub you have anything about 100HZ tends to be too much for your sub to handle, this is preference and size of the sub. I have a smaller sub (10 in sunfire) connected to my speaker line level to handle everything from 70 Hz -120Hz in connection with my mains and a much larger SVS Pb 13 Ultra connected to LFE to Handle 80Hz - 10Hz.
  14. i'm no pro and i'm sure others will chime in shortly with some better advice, but it seems that diy projects don't always go as well as planned. Some better than others. With the quality of the K-Horns you want a quality sub to do them justice, and a diy sub just may not hold its own unless you're quite the aficionado. In which you probably wouldn't be asking for advice of this sorts. I've recently gotten a SVS PB 13 Ultra and I am completely in awe with this thing, not only is it absolutely beautiful it sounds great and performs like a champ. I have a relatively large room (2700+ ft^3) and very "live" so this may add to its ability to perform. I don't think you would be disappointed at all if you were to go with SVS.
  15. I was wondering what users had for thoughts on regards to rotel and adcom powering their reference series speakers. In particular I'm looking at the Rotel RB 1080 and the Adcom GFA-5500. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
  16. First Impressions of the PB 13 Ultra, My Goodness, I may have to reenforce the living room. This thing so far is wild/scary. I have the gain turned less than 1/4 way up and it still pressurizes the room at ref. level. I have a Large room according to the user manual, which is nice to finally know never knew what was considered small meduim or large, LIveing room is about 2600 ft^3 most closed with an open door way to the kitchen. I'll post some pictures and a little better reviews when i get it calibtrated better. May I add this thing is absolutely beautiful, got it in oak and blends great in to the rest off the room. thanks SVS.
  17. Cas, I live in Bellevue how about you? Which Fortes do you have?
  18. I ordered the SVS PB 13 Ultra and was curious what thoughts if any users in this forum have about their experiece with SVS and Klipsch duos. Anyone who has this setup could you give me some pointers and details as to get the best results out of this duo?
  19. this can surely be done they make converters for just this reason, go to your local best buy, or office max and ask for a 110v to 220v converter . http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/200542319/100_watts_110_220_volt_Voltage.html
  20. I'm not familiar with that pioneer (I know it's older) that you have, and this might sound stupid but have you checked your wires to make sure nothings been crossed any where, polarity will cause it, if your wires are exposed in the back too much it could be shorting out. If you have the options make sure to check what the resistance is set at on the reciever (ie 4 6 or 8 ohms). 3/4 of the way up with RF 7 is quite loud, the draw the speakers have on the old amps could just be causing it to over heat, a good cleaning may also help.
  21. The foam or rubber would probably give the TV an unbalanced stature I would say taht was safe. The corkboard would probably be better of them, why not build a small shelf around the KLF to fit snug and set the tv on it .
