  1. I agree with boa12. You have a receiver with 7.1 capablility, why not use it. The A and B surrounds are made for different types of material (A for dipoles for HT, B for Direct Radiating Speakers for Music.) If you use both, all you're doing is doubling up. If you use the preamp outs you are getting more seperation. One cool thing with your receiver is that you can assign the amps, so if you get more than just a cheap 2 channel amp, you can use if for your fronts and let your receiver control the surround backs!
  2. This is a touchy subject for me. People who don't think THX means anything have never owned it. With THX you get seperation in your surround channels even with prologic, and yes, even the so-called "mono" surround back speakers. Generic 7.1 doesn't give you that. You also the Re-EQ which makes the sound a lot smoother. When movies are mixed for a theater, they know that the speakers are going to be behind the screen, so they make the sound brighter. Without the screen the sound can be a bit harsh. Being Klipsch owners, we should be able to appreciate that. Another HUGE benefit with THX receivers is the Bass Peak Level adjustment. That means absolutely no distortion from your subwoofer. I watched The Haunting with a Denon 3801 and my subs made a horrible sound as they bottomed out. With my THX receiver, they handled it no problem. Jim, your friend needed the amp for THX-EX, not for 5.1. As for not being able to touch a THX receiver for under $800, look at Pioneer Elite. A THX select can be had for about $500, and you can get one with EX for about $700. Anyway, I don't think you can get a receiver that sounds good for less, THX or not. Denon only makes 2 THX receivers, one for $2500 and one for $3500. (The 4802 and 5800). Not necessarrily because of THX, but I wouldn't buy a non-THX Denon. For the short time I had the 3801, I constantly had problems with Poor sound quality, Distortion, and weak amplification. What good is 7 channel stereo, when the receiver keeps going into protection, because it can't handle the load. Because you know Klipsch speakers require a ton of power because they are so damned inefficient. At least when you get a THX receiver, you know that the wattage ratings aren't inflated, like some other receivers I know. Okay, so I might have made some enemies here, the legions of Denon owners, but I'm not saying Denon is junk, I'm just saying that they are not the absolute greatest like some people think they are. And I'm also saying don't knock something (like THX) until you've tried it. By the way, my receiver is a Pioneer Elite VSX-36tx. You can pick one up for a Grand or less, which is not a huge amount for a receiver, and, in my opinion (which is from experience, not just listening to what someone else told me) it will outperform just about anything else in its price category. Not exactly what I would call an overpriced gimmick.
  3. The new Planet of the Apes is Awesome. Just watched it a few nights ago. Definitely one worth owning. Check out spun.com if you haven't already. Takes some of the risk out of buying DVD's you're not sure about. I've purchased DVD's at Best Buy as new releases for $15.00 and got $12.00 back when I didn't like it. No worse than renting at Blockbuster.
  4. Where did you look at speakers? Don't worry about a speakers wattage rating. It means nothing! It's a marketing number, not anything useful. There are a lot more useful specs. when looking for speakers, like senstivity, for instance. Speakers don't have "watts." Your salesman probably didn't know what he was talking about, so he made up some number so he'd sound like he knew what he was doing.
  5. DD, thanks for the info. It is very helpful. It would be cool to run Low Frequencies to my sub and everything else to my RS-3's but you pretty much shot down all my ideas for doing this. At any rate the way I have it set up now sounds really nice, I just need to do some more tweaking over the next couple weeks to get it just right. The subs I'm using are Infinity IL100s's. These are just my rear subs. I'm running "7.4" my mains are RP-5's and I'm using the LFE to them along with Bi-Wire speaker cables. I still might run dedicated front subs from the LFE in the near future and just use Speaker Wire to my RP-5's. Some would say that's overkill, but I think it will sound awesome. "7.6" is the only way to fly. I thought about "9.13" using all definitive technology powered speakers including front effects and four corner subs, but I don't want to give up my Klipsch. Plus I don't think my electrical could handle it.
  6. Boa, Thanks for the info. I haven't had the new subs that long. When I first tried them out on THX, it didn't sound like I was getting that much Bass. It's comforting to know I can still use my THX processing. I have checked the speaker setting while on THX and it still said large, but I wasn't sure. On the high pass, my Sub manual doesn't say anything. It would be interesting to find out. I'm not good enough to tell by ear what my RS-3's are doing. I have the Low Pass filters set at 80. Didn't want to go so low I can't hear it, but not so high that it sounds sloppy either.

    Receivers

If it's for music only, I would get a stereo receiver. You'll get a lot better performance from a $300 stereo receiver than a $300 surround sound receiver. I'd look at Yamaha or Denon. If you want surround sound later you can just replace the receiver. Or buy a Kenwood 4080 for $400 with slit shipping. Slits are always good .
  8. Are any of us impressed when we go to the movie theater anymore? I'd almost rather wait for the DVD and watch it on my set-up. When I saw mummy returns, I couldn't hear half of what they were saying, I wanted to adjust the levels. I don't even know if they had a center channel. I'm looking forward to the Pearl Harbor DVD. I didn't think the movie was all that great, but you can bet that I'll buy the DVD first thing Tuesday morning.
  9. I can confirm, I checked the receiver today, and it does have a button on the front panel that says "Video Select." I was going to answer earlier, but got too busy to get on the computer. You can select CD as your source, then scroll through all the video inputs and choose the one you want. Just run Analog outs from the Playstation as well as the digital out for when you want to listen to the CD player and have TV sound at the same time.
  10. I have a Pioneer VSX-36tx. I am using the LFE output for my main subs. For my rear subs, I am using Speaker Wire. With this receiver, can I use the line out and the speaker out at the same time? Would the Line level output be affected by the receiver's Bass Management, or would it send a full frequency? Also, would it be possible to use just the line level and then go to the speakers from the sub without wiring the speakers directly to the amp? I don't know if I'd get enough power or even if it would work.
  11. Star Wars Episode One!!! Didn't notice any hiss, but maybe because I was so in awe of the super quality. Planet of the Apes, Unbreakable, Bone Collector, Daylight(DTS), What dreams may come, Independence Day, Men In Black, Dances with Wolves (DTS), Titan A.E., The Haunting (DTS), Dragonheart (DTS), Pretty much any Disney movie with a 5.1 soundtrack. For 7.1, some of the titles mentioned above, especially SW Ep1, also the Patriot (Don't know if it was mixed for 7.1, but works really well.) Just some Reference Quality discs not mentioned above. Should keep you busy for a while.

    "Shrek"

Shrek was an awesome movie. 4:3 is cropped. When you saw it in the theater was the Movie screen square or rectangular? The Widescreen Version is 1.78:1 anamorphic. They don't get much better than this, guys.
  13. I thought Matrix Re-Loaded was the title of the sequel, revisited is the special features disc. Pearl Harbor on DVD should be great HT. Jay and Silent Bob, since I didn't see it in the theater will hopefully come out soon. In the theater, Episode Two, and Spider-Man!!

    DTS Music DVD's

I have several DTS CD's and a few DTS music DVD's. The sound is awesome. Some better than others. I recommend Sting:Brand New Day, and Ten Summoner's tales. Both have excellent sound quality. Some others which are a lot of fun are Paul McCartney:Band on the run, Steely Dan:Gaucho, and Marvin Gaye (greatest hits, or some title like that). It's really entertaining to listen to these CD's especially if you're not the kind of person who usually sits and just listens to music. For DVD's I own Eagles, Steely Dan, and Peter Frampton. All sound good and are fun to just crank. It's almost like being at the concert. Of course DD music DVD's are fun too. Fleetwood Mac, Metallica, Alice in chains. Some don't sound all that good though, Jimi, Up in Smoke tour, sound better in stereo.
  15. The SS-1's come in white. I angled my RS-3's down slightly when I mounted them on the same wall as my couch. Seems to work pretty well. If you do go in-wall, use the SCR's definitely, the will give you a wider dispersal pattern (similar to using SS instead of SB). In my opinion, the in-walls won't have quite the sound quality and not as much bass, but sometimes you have to make sacrifices to keep the wife happy.
  16. I am currently running a 7.1 system with my Pioneer Elite VSX-36tx receiver, RP-5 fronts, RC-3 center, and 2 pairs of RS-3's for surround and surround backs. I recently purchased two new Subs for rears. I hooked them up with speaker wire to the surround back channel output (Adcom Amp), and then out to the speakers. I have my surrounds set to large to get the Bass to my rears. My question is, if I set my receiver to THX, does the receiver still send the bass to the subs, or does it revert back to THX standards, and only send 80Hz and above? Also, my subs have a low pass filter, but no high pass filter. Will the sub "filter" out the bass, or will it send the full frequency to the RS-3's? I'm not really worried about damaging the RS-3's, I'm just wondering if I'm repeating some of the low bass information. Until I get a definitive answer, I'm just using "Standard" 7.1 instead of THX-EX. I like to use THX though, because I seem to get more seperation out of the surrounds. Thanks.
  17. Sony has a new player that does SACD (don't know the model #. DVPNS500?) I think that one gives you the option to do speaker adjustments on the DVD menu. I think some JVC's do too, and they are pretty decent players, you can maybe find their first DVD-A for pretty cheap if it's still around.
  18. I don't know if the Denon will do that or not. Some receivers will only give you a blank screen if you select the CD input (or the DVD's picture if you are using a DVD player as CD). Some receivers give you the option to switch the video to one source while having the audio on another source. My Pioneer Elite does this, and I know some Sony's will too, but I don't know about the Denon. Getting the Playstation's audio to the TV won't be a problem, it's just getting the picture to be what you want. With all the Denon people on this BB, I'm sure someone will know, but I'll look into it when I go to work tomorrow.
  19. I'm with you guys. I have no audio going to my TV at all. NYPD is good, but what about ER and Law and Order? I think sometimes I watch those shows just so I can crank up the Theme Songs Survivor is pretty awesome too. Even the news has some good bass sometimes.
  20. ttub, you have one audio output, but you probably have more than one VIDEO INPUT, right? Hook up the Playstation to a seperate input on the TV and you're all set. Or, you can get a Pioneer Elite and use the Video Select button. I'm not sure if the Denon has that or not, it might?
  21. Klewless, Yeah, you're right. I wish we did carry the Heritage stuff, mainly so that I could listen to them. I've never even heard a pair of Klipschorns. About the salespeople, it's true that some people don't know a lot about special order stuff. It's funny, you could point to any product and most of the guys could spout off the model number in seconds flat, but I had a customer looking for Klipschorns and the first guy he talked to said we didn't carry them and couldn't get them. He must've not known, because I can't imagine someone blowing off a big sale like that. But I do think we'd sell more of the Heritage if we carried them, it's not like Klipsch are hard to sell, just play them next to another brand, and tell people what to listen for and nine times out of ten they will go with the Klipsch. But, I'm not the boss, so I guess I'll just deal with what I've got. Thanks for taking the time to write back. Todd.

  23. Thanks everybody for replying. Randy, I remember the 70th and France store, but I was just a young kid at the time. Phil, Yeah, I've tried the dealer locator, but I didn't feel it was extremely accurate (Audio King isn't even listed, only FastTrak, which is our service department) so I hoped somebody else might know somewhere--I live a pretty sheltered life, I pretty much stay in the city, don't venture out to the 'burbs much. Klewless, what do you mean I should have a heart to heart with the mgmt? You mean because we don't have enough Klipsch? Or is there another issue with Audio King? Again, thanks to all who replied.
  24. Hi, I work for Audio King in Minnesota and sell Klipsch speakers. I have an opportunity to get Klipsch Products at a special accommodation price, but am torn. I like the RP-5's and am most likely going to get a system based on those (along with RC-3, and RS-3's) The problem is, I also really like the KLF-20's (a lot.) Between the RP-5's and the KLF-20's, I still choose the RP-5's. Unfortunately, we do not carry the KLF-30's and I have heard that the are really awesome speakers. Does anyone know where to get KLF-30's in the Twin Cities area. I'd really like to do an A/B comparison before I order my speakers. Thanks.
