  1. Hogwash. Take a perfect cabinet and then drill a 1/4" hole to create a leak and then measure the difference. I think you will be surprised. Bullshit Been there, done that. I was suprised on how much loss it causes from even a tiny leak around the driver, thats why expanding glue is used in the cabinet building process, to keep air leaks at bay. Much also depends on where the leak is located. Feel free to come by and i can simply remove a driver bolt from a completed cabinet for some testing, you're in the area. I've built a lot of horns where I just place the pieces together before gluing and have measured <3dB differences - and you can certainly hear the whistling from all the leaks of the unglued prototypes. Why bother testing a prototype horn with unglued rattling cabinet joints and whistling air leaks, if you measured a <3dB loss yourself why claim hogwash.

    Just found this thread. Your room is good sized and a single 15" would be the minimum i would recommend for bass duty but if musical is what you're searching for one of the Tuba subs would be a perfect choice and a best bang for the buck option, the effortless clean sound is hard to come by without breaking the bank. Sloppy bass is usually caused by a poorly tuned cabinet/ driver combo and/ or high distortion output can be interpreted as sloppy but either way i know where you're coming from.

  7. The only way the drop point would be higher is if you put the scale directly on the platter, even if it was off a tiny fraction of a gram i dont think it would would make much difference. Had my scale for a while now and its as accurate as it was when new, i check it every time before use for good measure. Good for more than measuring tracking force too.
  8. If you have the ability to adjust phase and delay on each subwoofer it would help but its still a band-aid repair on an issue that was created deliberately and could be avoided by simply using multiples of the same design.
  9. I use these for fan speed control. Zalman All fans are not created equal, some are better with pressure situations and others with freeflow. Fluid bearings are usually the quietist but there are exceptions.
  10. Phase problems exist anytime the same signal is sent to different cabinets. The horn length alone can cause problems let alone using different drivers. Why go looking for trouble, just use the same sub(s) throughout.
  11. Don't mix the KPT-1802 with the F-20's. Its going to give you phase problems.
  12. I will test for leaks. Pretty easy, right from the build sheets... Will report back in this post.. #40 Results: No leaks. These speakers are 100% tight. These are 24" wide THT's. Together, they are 48" wide, and dual drivers. Should result in flatter curve than a 36 with a single driver. Am I wrong? Two cabinets net you increased SPL as you clearly see in your chart. The wider you build the cabinet(s) the flatter your response and increased efficiency. That brings something to mind. Two honker 36" wide THT's would be an option for comparison to the 1802. Do you have a 36" one? I don't have any rooms big enough to benefit from using a bigger THT, in fact the plan is to eventually build a 18" wide Lab 15 loaded to accompany my pair of La Scala's. Either way is really overkill for a small to medium sized room but a little over the top is something we all crave i think. By the way are you happy with your pair of BFM THT's ? Never thought to ask.

  14. Mostly loss of output from air leaks, even a pinhole size leak will cause loss. Lets not forget this is not the full size THT, the 3 ft wide model is dam near flat to 25 Hz.
  15. Thank you for taking time out to measure your sub(s). Its possible one sub may have a small air leak causing the discrepancy in output.
  16. I have heard other Onkyo stuff, not bashing the brand, just this model. Expecting a better sounding budget receiver i guess, when something sounds this bad it needs to be culled out for a better pick.

  18. Check the vertical scale of this graph in relation to the one I posted - the curves are very close to the same. My comment on the relative performance below 40 Hz for the THT and the KPT-1802 are basically unchanged. I disagree but the people on the forum can come to their own conclusion on the subject with the information provided here or look into it with more detail on the BFM forum.
  19. The posted information is here on the forum, i posted the link earlier in this thread but here it is again. DIY sub for Klipschorn based HT (and music) - Tuba HT - build done (except for finish)! Bill Fitzmaurice forum has similar posts on the subject, all are very close except for the bullshit chart that appeared earlier in this thread, this misinformation was also posted previously in other threads by Dr Who if i recall. Bill clearly lists frequency charts in the SPL chart page on his forum, looks very similar to what i posted here today. BFM THT SPL chart.
  20. With all the storms that came through the Chicagoland area lately one of my friends lost his Denon receiver, im not sure of the model but it sounded decent for what it was. Anyway i offered one of my receivers that is no longer used but he wanted something new and having recently lost his full time job and working only part time was on a tight budget and picked up the Onkyo TX-8020. Yesterday i went over and swapped out the old Denon for the new Onkyo and we took it on a test drive using his Walnut Klipsch Forte's expecting nothing spectacular and was dissapointed with the results. No clarity, subpar dynamics, sloppy bass, screechy mids with grating highs. I have heard my share of budget receivers, even i purchased a new $50 Sherwood on closeout from Circuit City for basement use a while back and think even the jippo model Sherwood was a step up from Onkyo's budget buy. My advice, if you value your music save some cash and get yourself something decent. Empty pockets ? Buy used.
  21. Yes, just because your sub is rated down to 25 Hz +/-3dB or whatever room gain would bring that number far lower, of course your results will vary with room dimensions.
  22. Dad purchased a 2265 new back in the mid 70's to replace a Fisher unit, both were handed down to me at one point. A good friend owned a 2325, i thought both sounded very similar to my 2265. Never heard the 2385 that i recall though i do forget many things over time. Personally i would choose the Marantz over the Pioneer units though i do still run a Pioneer SX-780 in the shop. Choosing one over the other weather it be sonic detail or aesthetics both have stood the test of time and either brand would be a good pick to restore if it happens to be your cup of tea.
  23. The KPT1802 has no passive radiator, its a ported design. The max SPL of the THT is 127 dB, add 2 more THT's and it would far surpass the 130 max SPL of the KPT1802, no guessing involved
