  1. Fan specs are based on free air spin, some are louder once placed in pressure or vacuum.

I recommend using fluid dynamic bearing models, they always seem to be quieter with equal rpm compared to ball bearing & sleeve bearing models.

If these fans are 12 volt rated i recommend Arctic or if you can spring some extra cash Noctura makes excellent products.

Just basing this on years of computer building experience and wanting quiet computers.

These brands make many sizes to fit most applications.

  2. The hard drive I ordered is the Western Digital 2tb red sata III, 3.5" It is optimized for use in NAS so when i get settled I can set up NAS and hopefully have a tried and true hard drive

next is to find a deal on a couple externals with good reviews to set up as redundant mirrors, so i have 3 minimum copies of my files at all times

I know nothing about this stuff so I should stay out of it, but if I am close maybe Thaddeus can explain or someone else. But if you are going to build your own hard drive couldn't you have a proprietary(<-that might not be the right word I want to use) drive let say 3-4 tb, then just add 2-3 tb external drives as needed, think there is some sort of Raid that you can use to mirror what is on the smaller drives in the event that one crashes will mirror them on the proprietary(<-again may not be the right word) drive for back up.

I have only read bits and pieces of this thread so I don't understand your reason for the 2 extra external hard drives.

If I am way off just yell at me to go away,

You can mirror a drive but you would need to re-install windows witch is not a huge deal.

The extra hard drives are for increasing storage capacity.

RAID is a good option but not needed, i like RAID 5 myself but you need at least 3 drives.

  3. My friend gary had a set of decorator K-horns he picked up cheap with 70's style formica in the ugliest pattern you ever saw, sounded decent though.

These look like they could be gems with a little veneer & some TLC. $2000 is steep but maybe he will come down if you flash some cash.

  4. You may get close but a perfect one's not gonna happen. Even batches of paint can be a mixmatch.

If you want perfection have them all painted at once or go to your local Valspar dealer & tell them what you want.

Last time i picked up i had to buy a whole gallon, forgot what i paid but was around $100. Used a roller & wetsanded until it was a close match.

Another option is to take them to your local Maaco or budget body shop with one of your speakers and have them match as close as they can.

  5. Never thought about the mail server, i guess that can be another possibility.

I received a warning from Yahoo recently too telling me my account may have been compromised and changed my password to a more secure one figuring it would be safer but who knows.

Nothing valuable on my account anyways, why people bother i don't know.

  6. You might have a Trojan Horse or a worm on your PC. One tip i was told years ago is to make up a fake email address that will come up to the top of your email contacts list... ie 0@myspam.com. By doing this with a fake email address the virus will not be able to send out anything to anyone you know as it won't get past the first one. Now maybe the viruses have gotten smarter and skip it I don't know, but it has worked for me.

Working on a scan right now.

It is still possible you weren't hacked. If you send emails to multiple recipients using CC rather than BCC, each recipient has the full email addresses of all recipients. If one of those computers has an email SMTP type virus, it can send itself to others. That is a way these viri procreate and get read if spam or phishing. They came from a trusted sender.

Never sent a E-mail to multiple recipients.

  7. How do you know it was hacked? Anybody can send an email with your address as the originator.

The E-mail was sent out to multiple contacts stored in my account including members here.

I was contacted by one of the recipients with a copy of the spam sent.

  8. If you plan on downloading more stuff maybe its best to get a bigger drive so you don't run out of space. Hard drives are not expensive until it crashes and you lose all your valuables.

If you mirror your drives it would be much safer.

I have all my current files backed up now on a 1tb external, I keep it tucked away so it doesnt get dropped etc..., I also plan to get another backup so i can have 3 file locations just incase

What exactly is a mirror drive ?? I assume it is an exact copy of the main drive, Including OS etc...Correct ??

My concern is loosing pics and music, I dont have to have a copy of the operating system do I in order to use my external drive and restore music or pics on another cpu ??

Mirror copy is another copy of your hard drive implemented through RAID software or hardware.

Raid 1 or 5 is most popular but there are other options as well.

Use google for more information, theres too much information to list here.

  9. Older computer will work great. Load a simple red hat Linux for OS and it can use the USB on your DAC. There is a lot if support for this type solution too. If going with full computer route get as much ram as possible.

Most of the older cpu, have between 2 and 4 gb of ram, you feel thats low, what advantage is there to more ram ?? I will start looking at the apple tv option

    thanks

2 GB of memory will be enough.

No need to over do it if using it for simple tasks.

  10. Thanks Jason, If the case has a space for a second drive is it safe to assume that all cable connections are there / available, ie... power connector, and mother board connector

Also most desk tops haave 3.5 sata drives is this the only info i need worry about when getting the secondary drive ( i realise i want to make sure it has the storage i want

Depends, some may have the cable some may not, any local computer store will have your cable if its not already there.

If theres a spot for an extra drive the mainboard should have a connection for it, every manufacturer is different.

If just adding a drive you won't need to re-install windows.
