  1. There was a compatability problem but if you whoever has those mobos has updated there bios to the newest version there should be no problem.
  2. I tell you one thing I kept my Gateway 2000 (when the 2000 was still part of the name) Pentim 125 alive and kicking with 2 video card updates and a PCI sound card. Anything to off load instructions from the processor will help. Now if you do get a Vodoo card be warned!!! They have just gone under and support for them will soon be gone. A TNT2(you might be able to find the 64meg version too) PCI card will definately pump a little juice back into an older machine. Even a new soundcard would too. If you play games that would definately be a step in the right direction. If you are just looking to keep your machine alive a while longer those are the cheap band aids. A little RAM would hurt either. hehe! Good luck!!!!
  3. Yes run right out and buy a card more dependant on a dying API (Glide) and while your at it pick up an Sound Blaster 8 bit isa sound card too. Unless you've been living under a rock the last week 3dfx (Vodoo) is no longer in the picture they've been bought by Nvidia. Every site out there recomends Geforce not because of hype. They are very good cards for the right now. Anybody can pop a high powered chipset onto a card and make it pump out 150 fps. If you can tell me you can tell the difference between 55 and 105 fps then you must god. But if you can honestly tell me you don't want to jack that resolution up as high as your monitor will take and have 32 bit color depth well you stick with that gforce (which does 32 fairly well) but I'll take my high res 32 bit with kick *** quality thank you very much. Oh and as far as Aureal vs. SB, I've owned the 3 versions of the Aureal chips(The 1st Monster Sound from Diamond,a Vortex and Vortex 2) and none of them came close to the SBL xgamer I have. It's not the top of the line SBL but it's got it where it counts.
  4. Are you looking for a PCI card because you don't have an AGP slot? If you don't have an AGP slot I'm assuming your puter is pretty old in which case a Gforce card may not be a good idea where the cards speed is usually proportional to the processor speed. If the processor can't keep up with what the cards putting out then.... Maybe you should look for a TNT card if that is the case. If not then getting an AGP card for a few more dollars would be a much wiser decision.
  5. You get great fps with the Radeon. At high res, 32 bit the Geforces maybe able to keep up with the Radeon but in most cases the Radeon beats it, it maybe by a small amout but it beats it. Also from what I've heard the image quality coming off Radeons are better than the GF because the GF is basically "how fast can I process this stuff and move it on", concerned mostly with how many fps it can produce. The newest drivers from ATI where a small improvement but you can only make small improvements on something that already looks and works great.
  6. Also remember the Geforce cards memory runs into a bottle neck and some passes of the cards cpu are wasted there fore making the card slower in some cases. It's only fast because of the raw power it has that's also why some Athlon mobos have had problems with it, huge power consumption. The Radeons gpu have no wasted passes and no bottle necks with the memory because of the engine ATI has put into these cards. If you are tired of 16 bit graphics there shouldn't be a question, Radeon. Also in a year or so down the road when every game and 3d apps are depending on all the DX 8 features who's gonna be ontop of it all? Also ATI has a newer driver on there site than what comes on the install disk.
  7. I got the 32 meg DDR version. I couldn't afford the 64 but I don't think I took to much of a performance hit. I had a Creative OEM TNT 2. If anyone out there gets a Radeon and you wanna really see what it can do install the ATI demo called "Radeons Ark" it shows everything the card can do and make you say Geforce?? Whats a Geforce?? The DVD aspect wasn't a big deal to me because I have a real dvd player in my living room. But after seeing what the Radeon can do I wonder why anyone would get something not geared for the future of graphics.
  8. Ok here's where I bring thy hellfire down upon my head. I have an Athlon (noth Thunderbird unfortunately) and love it. However the older K7 mobos had probs with Geforce 2 cards because they where a major voltage hog. I just recently got a Radeon because I like my graphics 32 bit and full screen. If you plan on a DDR graphics card and a Athlon mobo update your bios. My board was fussy about the Radeon, I updated the bios and is took it. Don't get a Vodoo card you'll get much better longevity from a Gforce and even more from the Radeons.
