I purchased the same D\A converter C talks about(CAL gamma) You can get it from sensory science.com for $99. The improvements in my system were: TREBLE: the top end was smoother, yet more detailed MIDRANGE: a little smoother, graininess gone BASS: sounded more "full". This was what improved most. IMAGING: instruments were easier to localize. Well, I finally damped the horns and woofer baskets on my klf-10s. I used rope caulk for both. They now have a more defined midrange which is more forward, but smoother. The bass and treble seem to be about the same. About 6 months ago I had the same problem. I upgraded almost everything, but the biggest improvement came when I got the CAL gamma DA converter see reviews from soundstage @ http://www.soundstage.com/todd02.htm http://www.soundstage.com/entry07.htm After I got it the treble was more detailed, but was not harsh. The biggest improvement was the bass. The stock YAMAHA DA was a little thin, but the gamma had very warm deep bass. Nice system gamer. I would go somewhere with a return policy, buy the wire, and test it out. I don't know about the z-series but I recently upgraded from radioshack 12 gauge to Monster MCX 1s and there was an improvement. The bass is tighter and the midrange is smoother, along with a little more top-end detail. I didn't really notice an improvement in imaging. I would try to bring them both home at the same time and test them out, the KLFs need a good amp to sound balanced. If looks are important I think the KLFs look better with the real-wood-venneer. I auditioned both and liked the KLFs better, I would think for you, since you listen to classical the KLFs would sound alot better, they sound alot more dynamic IMO. Either will be much better then the SB3s though. After I bought the 10's I went and auditioned the 20's. To me the 10's sound weaker in the mids, while I found the 20's too forward in the mids. I liked my KLF 10's. But with my YAMAHA receiver they were bright. I recently upgraded to the CAL GAMMA, which gave it a smoother more detailed sound, but it was still bright. Then I found an adcom gtp 400 preamp and a GFA 545 mK II in the paper for $300 for both. The guy never used them, they were a gift. The person who bought them for him told him he had to have big speakers because it would blow them up. (POOR INFORMATION HIM = GOOD DEAL FOR ME). So now that I have the D/A converter and the new amp and preamp it has smoother treble, more detail, and warmer cleaner bass (that came mostly after the D/A). So overall I am alot happier with the way it sounds. Sounds pretty good but I think it would be better to get a $500 DVD player and an $800 reciever, you could get the Denon 3801 for 800 online. Oh, I forgot to mention the controls are: input level (1-10), and dynamic expansion (4,7,10,13,16), and a level meter (like a tape deck).

The piece you are refering to is the dust cap, if it is paper you could try getting a very thin screw, screw it in so about half of the threads are inside then GENTLY pull it out. Then unscrew it. However do not do this to the cone itself.
