  1. i use a pair in my laScalas. To me they sound WAY better than the stock K400 horn, but they would require some x-overs levels adjustements to sound at their best since they are less "hot" than the K400. You should give them a second chance. Why not trying them out with ALK crossovers?
  2. I have a spare "klipschorn"-like folded bass horn, bought by I don't know wich brand. The throat is larger than in the k-horn, and there's a 2inch thick wooden circle that separates the woofer gasket from it. So the front compression room is bigger than in the K-horn. I'd like to use it maybe as a subwoofer for my LS (but would it reach low enough??) Also i don't know wich woofer I could use in it. I could buy a K33 but I think' I'd rather go for a more powerful design since I only have ONE bass bin. Also as I don't need to go up to 400hz maybe I could use a lower-reaching unit? anu input welcome
  3. Congratulations for your purchase here's what I did to my old AA La Scalas: 1) replace the midrange horns with electro Voice SM120A. Smoother, wider dispersion, more detailed. Doesn't ring. (you keep the existing K55V driver) 2) replace stock tweeters with Beyma CP25. You may have to change the tweeter tap on the autoformer. My CP25 sounded too "loud" in my bright room. Of course, I have the split industrial version so I just had to build a new top cabinet to hold the new tweeter and squawker. They wouldn't fit in the stock cabinet. But you could just put them on top of yours. You can also disconnect the Zener diode in the tweeter circuit, and remove the brass screw in the tweeter inductor. It's a subtle change, but worth it. I now ordered a Behringer DCX 2496 digital active crossover with delay, phase and eq settings for each band, and i'm about to tri-amp my Scalas using my NAD amp for the bass, and two TriPath based SonicImpact amplifiers (2 x 5W) for the mediums and tweeters. it's gonna be a lot of fun setting it right
  4. I'd like to buy tow Sonic Impact amps and try tri-amping my LaScalas, leaving my current amp for the bass bins and the two SI amps for the mids and highs. BUT I've been looking on the internet and it seems I can't find them in Belgium. Does anybody know more about that? thanks folks!

  7. dubai, "mediocre review"? have you read it? I think it must sound better than a klipschorn because it has klipsch's strenghts (the bass horn) and probably has better mid and high drivers. It's a four way design, allowing the bass horn to take care only of frequencies under 150Hz, hence the bigger (18inches) woofer. It probably goes deeper than the klipschorn. Add then the fact that the 12inches midbass driver is handled by a non-folded horn, and the fact that each driver has its own amplifier. Multi amplification. The royal way. That's a lot. I personnaly think it's ridiculous to say that everything "non klipsch" is crap. Klipschorns are fantastic speakers, we all agree with that. But if you're loaded and wanna spend the money, you can have better horn speakers. IMHO.

  9. Just found a review in a german high-end magazine. It's a four way, active, all hornloaded speaker, based on oversized klipschorn-style cornerhorns with 18inches woofers, 12inch mid-bass loaded by round 30+inches horns, midranges and tweeters. Total power/channel: 450Watts RMS; tweeter and mid amps are in pure class A. Connections and amps are all balanced. Said to sound incredible. Price? just guess but if I win the lottery, i know i'll buy these.
  10. funny. A few years ago i bought a pair of old JBL speakers, also called "C36". Cornwall-sized boxes with D130 wide-band speaker and 075 tweeter. Sound was not very "hi-fi" but fun nonetheless.
  11. A few things to try out: -use AlK type A x-overs -change the midrange horns (altec 511B, EV SM120A) :for my ears, the klipsch stock horns are way too "beamy", wich IMHO is only a good thing in a very, very big room -do both of the above.
  12. I'm almost sure the speakers aren't to blame. first, ditch the equalizer! You're talking about a laptop... are you using a computer as a source???
  13. I'd say your amp isn't really good enough for the RF7, and removing the bass from it just helps removing some amp distortion. The easier load your amp will see, the sweeter it will sound. Yes, bi-amping might help. And if you go for subs, please cross them over WAY lower than 200Hz! You'd ruin you speakers speed and attack. 100Hz it's the absolute max...
  14. geez, IMHO the main problem is not that new gear is bad, it's that you guys who prefer OLDER SS amps to newer ones are comparing old high-end amps to new entry level amps. I own a few old SS amps, no one can even come close, to my ears at least, to a GOOD modern amp, even something quite cheap like a NAD. True, the old Sansui are not bad, but it's not quite as good. Or maybe it's just a matter of taste.
  15. Jitter is the main cause of digital "harshness". You can't really hear it by itself, but when it's there, the sound is unnatural and fatiguing.
  16. nah, just before that one, he's on his hospital bed, speaking with some politician, and this politician has a "surprise": then we hear some music, and enter one first enormous speaker, pushed by two guys, then a second one and a complete stereo, along with journalists and photographers. THAT scene. What are the huge, ugly speakers? i doubt they were made specially for the movie...

DM ---------------- Well, i actually have QEd Anniversary silver (mixed with copper) wire between tweeters and crossovers, and QEd regular copper wire on the other drivers. I'm sure it has to play a part in the relative loudness of the tweeters, but enough for needing a 3dB attenuation? I'm quite sceptical...
  18. just saw that movie again yesterday evening. was so long ago i didn't remember the last scene. does anybody know what are the speakers the guy receives in his hospital room, some kind of giant direct radiating things, like Bozak Concert grand... ?

My opinion. ---------------- Yep, i agree with that. did it, sounds great! i wouldn't come back to the stock K400 horn. But that shouldn't stop you upgrading your networks.

So some people replace the pro woofers with a "hi-fi" K33 if it's for an indoor hi-fi use. powerful enough I think the cross-over is basically the same except it's been splitted in two. differences in sound should be very marginal...
  21. No problem Dean...lol and you're perfectly right. BUT the mod i did to balance the beyma to the rest was easy to do and effective, and my scalas really sound a lot better now than with the stock tweeter...
  22. Well, yes, if the tweeter is a better tweeter but is too loud, it can't sound good. What's so strange in what I wrote?
  23. hi folks, since two years now (geeez, amazing how time flies!) I've been considering buying ALK type A networks for my old, type AA laScalas. being young and poor (well, let's say "student"), this hasn't been done yet for budget reasons. Meanwhile i've been updating the midrange horns (EV SM120A in place of the K400), and three months ago i replaced the K77M tweeters with beyma CP25. That last change, while improving the QUALITY of treble, also made my speakers sound WAY too bright, almost unbearable, when it was just balanced with the K77M. My listening room is quite small and very "bright" sounding, so any excess of high frequencies is disastrous. Also, i listen mainly to Cd's, through a SS amp. So after asking Al for a solution, i dropped the tweeter network level down by 3db by connecting it to a lower transformer tap, wich was easy to do on the AA and worked great. My main concern is: if I buy ALK networks, wich is still on my wishlist, will i be able to modify it so that the tweeter doesn't sound too hot? there's no way I can try a pair before ordering as -as some of you may already know- I live in Brussels, Belgium and nobody owns ALKs around here. thanks for any advice or comment... Frans

A sub might be your best option, but then you need a really good one. or maybe a better source (I personnaly never listen to 2 channel music on my DVD player...yurk) or you may buy a NAD amp. Digs low in the bass with klipsch speakers. hell, no, it ISN'T easy to get good bass from Klipsch speakers. sensitive they are, bass monsters they aren't!
  25. I'd like to know if anyone has been using Naim Audio's CD3.5 in his system. it's supposed to be a very, very good player, and there's one for sale near my place, not cheap tho at 900 euros... any experience with Naim products?
