  1. Your KP201 really look nice! I don't normally see them in that nice condition.
  2. Oh Man! I just blew the budget on a pair of Velodyne DLS-5000R. I may see if the wife is agreeable...
  3. Over the weekend, I picked up a pair of Velodyne DLS-5000R subwoofers. They have 15" drivers in a vented cabinet, forward firing, 600 watt class D, with some DSP eq. Since I use my KP301-B-Br as mains in my HT, these subwoofers compliment them nicely. I plan on purchasing the new Mad Max on Blu Ray tomorrow to really put my system through it's paces. While these may not be the best subwoofers ever, they were very inexpensive and are just like knew. The PO must have had $50k worth of HT gear in his house, so these might as well be straight out of the box. Now for an Academy center or a solo Heresy.
  4. We will probably be heading up to Hot Springs for a family vacation Labor Day weekend. If so, we may be able to work something out on this speaker.
  5. I am using an RC-7 for now. Someday, I will use an industrial Heresy.
  6. I am in Rockwall - where are you?
  7. FWIW, I have retuned my KP301 cabinets to a lower frequency - mathematically, they are tuned to 38 hz, by extending one of the ports into the cabinet. They certainly have a lower range now. I use mine for home theater/home stereo, so I don't miss any loss of SPL that may have occured by retuning the cabinets. With 125 dB @ 400 watts continuous, I felt I had room to sacrifice (heh, heh).
  8. The HIP - is just a single available or a pair?
  9. That depends on which cabinet they are in. I have a pair of KP301-B-Br in laquered blonde birch cabinets on short risers, no socket at all.
  10. I tuned mine lower by adding a port tube extension [mo][]
  11. Here are the T/S parameter for the K-48-KP: 05-RE OHMS 3.97 06-LE MH 1.17 07-QM 6.65 08-QE .370 09-QT .350 10-XMAX MM 5.50 11-BL TM 15.93 12-EFF % 3.21 13-FS HZ 41.93 14-MMS GMS 89.35 15-CMS mm/N .1612 16-RMS NS/M 3.5376 17-VAS LTRS 166.07 18-SD SCM 856.34 19-EBP 113.9 20-SPL dB 97.1 I believe I have these woofers in my KP301 speakers. I contacted Eminence and these are the numbers that they supplied.
  12. They made the 301 as a home speaker? it was already a Cornwall/Chorus in the first place... I've had a pair of the road-handle versions for ages. Do yours have the tweeter-protection device on them? Mine have a lacquer birch finish without handles. They are a home version of the KP301. Mine do have two fuses on each cabinet for driver protection, one for the tweeter and I believe one for the mid. I am not sure and will need to look at the schematic again. I have not played around with the port tuning yet. I was wondering if I can install the ports from the front, rather than removing the woofer and installing them from the interior. That will make it easier for me to play with different lengths. But, they may not tune the same outside of the cabinet. Any thoughts?
  13. It is supposed to rain here all weekend. If so, I will put off the automechanicing (is that a word?) and try to make some of these measurements.
  14. I don't have an oscillator, but I do have a laptop with a simple signal generator program. Would that work? I haven't done a free air resonance test before. This method is something that I can handle, substituting my laptop and an amplifier for the oscillator. http://books.google.com/books?id=rv3vKxUwfQQC&pg=PA257&lpg=PA257&dq=free+air+resonance+test&source=bl&ots=Eo27kGKKH8&sig=697wBujzNrT44XUa_pCaYOBOSB0&hl=en&ei=ZILpS_23JIPGlQfD6ryMCw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CAsQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=free%20air%20resonance%20test&f=false
  15. I had thought about a piece of PVC, cut to length. Any suggestions on length? Should I consider tuning one or both ports/cabinet?
  16. I have a pair of the KP-301 in brown lacquer Birch cabinets. I love them! I have them actively biamped with a Behringer crossover. A Rotel integrated is handling the switching and the amp section is driving the horn stack. A big QSC is driving the woofers. I am having a ball playing around with these! They have handled anything that I have thrown at them. They are so efficient that the amps are just loafing and levels that will run you out of the room. You may already know this, but the KP-301 is the industrial version of the Chorus. To me, the Chorus is the unsung heroe of the vintage Klipsch designs. If I read the specs right, the KP-301 speakers also have the Tractrix horns - I cannot say if they are an improvement, since I have not heard the prior horn design, but from everything that I have read, the tractrix design is superior. I got my pair for $100, in excellent condition. I recommend that you spend the money and get the original woofer! The bottom end on these speakers are really something. I have read comments from some people that these are bass shy - they may not go quite as deep as some other systems that I have heard, but what is there is all quality!
  17. I have stopped in Hope while traveling I30 between Dallas and Memphis. Unfortunately, the Klipsch museum was closed, but the hope museum was open and very interesting. I believe I'll have to attend this here shindig!
  18. Dang, vintagevalves! That's a lot of elbow grease. Your KP301's look really good. Do they sound good, too? I really love the glass in the second picture. I have to get some tubes on mine sometime.
  19. You are right about the RA-100 Bruce. It is a very respectable, incredibly inexpensive, clean reference amplifier. I keep an eye out for them on CL, eBay, pawn shops, etc. Not to threadjack, but I have a pair of Klipsch KP301-B-Br, the industrial version of the Chorus. I have them passively biamped with a Rotel RA-870BX integrated driving the horn stack and a QSC CX1202V driving the woofers. The plan is to purchase a good electronic crossover at some point this summer. Then, I will truly be biamplifying these babies. I will probably replace the Rotel (maybe with the RA-100) at some point. The Rotel really sounds good with the JBLs.
  20. Way to go on the Chorus II. I have been dialing in a pair of industrial Chorus and I am having the same experience as you. All of my tired CD collection is suddenly interesting to me again! I have also added a few albums, including a Norah Jones - exquisite! I have had my Klipsch set up in my new living room for about 2 months now, passively biamped for about a month. Music has never sounded better! The listening space is about the best I have ever had. My amplification is also better than ever. Tonight, when I got home from work, my wife was playing Fleetwood Mac: Greatest Hits. I sat down in front of the stereo to eat some Taco Soup (yum!) and Sara came on. Oh my goodness! Now I have listened to this recording probably 50 times on many different stereos. My best system to date had been my JBL 4410 powered by an Alesis RA-100. I have heard a great deal of detail on this setup before and have been very pleased with them. However, tonight, I heard the multitrack layering on the harmonies to Sara like I have never heard them before! I can hear Stevie, Lindsey and Christie individually. The sound just gets so big, hits a crecendo, and then collapses back to the simple rhythm and tune. It happens as Stevie is singing about drowning in the sea of love. I made my wife sit down and listen. She said that it is just like the ocean's tide, the way the sound builds, then ebbs, and she is exactly right. I have never heard the space and depth in this particular recording before. My copy is on a CD, so now I am on the hunt for a great copy of Tusk on vinyl. I also can't wait to get an active crossover in the system and hear how that sounds.
  21. Klipsch KP301-B-Br I took these poor pictures right after I got my Klipsch. I need to refinish these and post some better pictures.
  22. Rock on, Brad! As you are progressing so quickly, I would say that you should be listening to your Cornwalls sometime next week, or the week after at the latest. Congratulatiions on your good fortune.
  23. I am using a Rotel RA-870BX integrated with a pair of KP301. My Klipsch may not be true "vintage", but they are very close. The KP301 is an industrial version of the Chorus. It is also very similar to the Cornwall. I am using the Rotel amp section to drive the horn stack and a QSC CX1202V to drive the woofers in a biamplified configuration with the Rotel's preamp output split into both of the amplifiers. I really like the way the Rotel amplifier performs with the top end of the Klipsch. The preamp section is very nice, too. I can defeat the tone controls and can also run the cd input direct. I haven't really checked out the turntable input section as well as I should - my cousin is using my turntable. The Rotel's tone controls are very subtle. When I have them defeated, the Rotel has a very nice, warmish tone. If I run the source direct, the Rotel is very flat and clinical. I prefer to use the tone controls in the loop, with a slight enhancement on the bass. Actually, even with the bass control wide open, the boost is very controlled - adequate to bring up the bottom end without getting boomy or too exaggerated I am very pleased with the Rotel's sound paired with the Klipsch. I am also impressed by the build quality of this product. I can't say I have compared other amplifiers, but I will be swapping out some in the future.
  24. As a fellow KP301 owner, congratulations on your Klipsch! I am still working with mine - they already sound excellent, but if funds permit this year, I am getting an active crossover. I would love to get a fancy crossover with a microphone feedback loop. As a pro, what would you recommend?
