I've gone from S/S to P/P to 300b to 2A3 to 45 tubed Welborne StarChiefs. I've tried Decware and George Wright amps with my Klipschorns but the 45 tube SET sound is something special. I do use P/P Wright EL 34 monoblocks with my La Scalas (my rock and roll rig) for the extra punch.The extra power comes in handy for rock and rock, but for jazz and female vocals, the 45 is the bomb!

I have StarChiefs and DRD 45's and have used my EML solid plates in both. They came with another custom 45 amp I bought before I found my Welbornes. I wouldn't have bought them outright. They do seem to have a slight bit of hum, but I have forgiven that in lieu of more soundstage and holography. For some reason they do seem to improve after a minimum of 25 minutes warming up. I have sets of Union and RCA's, but I still prefer the EML's. Tube dampers seemed to help focus them.

I have passed through Okeechobee, where Marshall lives, twice this weekend. Unfortunately, the phone # I have for him is not valid. And yes, as has been previously stated, I would not advise dropping in without prior arrangements.

I found all this at the Habitat Thrift Store in Crystal River, Florida. All were in almost perfect shape, and about half even had plastic inner sleeves! I haven't even had to clean them. My worst and first was 25 years ago. I was working as a waiter in a fine dining restaurant when it broke loose, I took out my wine key and sterilized the blade on it and was ready to cut myself open and take it out. I figured it would hurt less. I showed up at emergency in a tuxedo with my pants around my ankles and a purple ruffled shirt. I must have looked a mess. I told the nurse that she had 60 seconds to get some painkillers in me before I started busting the place up. She only took 45. I've heard cranberry juice keeps them from forming. I drink a lot of it and have never had a bad one since.

Most of those caddy's contain tv tubes that have no audio application.

Lots of folks go the solid state route, but when they try Single Ended Triode tube amps, they rarely go back. Once I heard my Khorns on a SET 300b amp, I never looked back. I have since joined Cut-Throat in my appreciation of the 45 tube sound. It's the cleanest I have ever heard my speakers. I still have a 300b, a 2A3, and a push-pull EL34 amp, but my 45 tubed amp is my favorite. If you would list your location, there is probably someone near you that you could audition what they are using to get first hand experience. Good luck. Horns love tubes!

Check out Eric Hockman at TimbreMill.com. He demo'd his speakers at out Suncoast Audiophile Society meeting in Orlando yesterday and we were all blown away with his gear. He does work for theme parks, concert halls, etc. and might be able to help you. Nice guy and very knowledgable. Tell him Captain Jim Mobley sent you.

Black ones are rare. I have one and the DAC's inside are better than my Eastern Electric DAC.

I bought one to match my other pb12+2. Haven't unloaded it yet. Will keep you posted on what 2 sounds like. The seller had 2 in a bedroom that was about 10ft wide and 15ft deep. It was like being in a trash can with a chainsaw!
