  1. Thanks for the replies. Like the humorous ones too (fini). Turning on I go: pre-amp, cd, amp, amp. Off I reverse the process. One other that I forgot to mention, and I had another system in past do it, is after maybe 5-10 seconds of amp being turned off, a slight whine can be heard through spkrs. Thanks Fred
  2. Hello, If it matters, I'm using 2 Rotel RB-1070's plugged into a Rotel RLC-1040 Power Conditioner going into My RF-83's. Lately I've been disconnecting spkr cables until I turn amps on. The thump is not really bad, just slight. Prior to power conditioner I was using a Monster Cable HTS-2000 with just the one RB-1070 and had no thump on turn on. So I didn't know if it was due to my bridging of amps or the change to the power conditioner. Guess what I'm wanting to know is whether any harm will come to speakers. Thanks Fred
  3. Hello, writing is not a strong point so I hope I don't wander/confuse too much. My question is about am I hurting My system soundwise by amps being bridged? Sometimes I think not, then other times it does seem I can notice a difference, more so in the high frequency area. Bass is definitely more pronounced. Have had numerous people listen to it and come away very impressed by it in bridged mode, with one being a member of a rock n' roll band fwiw. He plays bass, and seems able to really pick out the fine details. Obviously I'm using 2 Rotel RB-1070's connected to a pair of Klipsch RF-83's. It's the ohm numbers I'm wondering about. The Rotel's say not to use speakers below 8 ohms. Based on review I read from Sound & Vision, 11/06, it said the 83's dip as low as 2.8 ohms at 180 hz. The dealer I purchased through got with Rotel tech dept. and said I'd be okay, figure they must know somewhat what they are talking about. Also, I've read and been told many many speakers have dips below 8 ohms at the lower freq's. So I guess I was hoping someone knowledgable here might agree or not. I only bridged because I needed more power, so it seemed, like when I usually was around 105db on spl meter. The normal one amp was 130wpc @ 8ohm, bridging brought it up to 330 wpc @ 8ohm. I wish it were just a switch on back of amp to change the bridge mode, then I'd be able to compare the difference easier. Well, that's about it. Hope I made sense. Fred
  4. Just a simple dude here....but I'll take My KLF-30's, or keep I should say. As far as the "best" goes, isn't it what pleases One's ears the most? I've had the chance to listen to the Klipschorn's, LaScala's, Heresy's, RF-7's, RF-62's, 82's, RF-63's, and finally the RF-83's which I purchased. Maybe it's because I've listened to the KLF-30's the longest that I've grown accustomed to them. Also had the KLF-20's, but sold. I preferred the bigger footprint of the 30's. Just My 2 cents. Fred
  5. I prefer the mids/highs of the 30's, don't seem to be as strained if that is the right word. The bass on the 83's seems to go deeper, stronger. Lastly.....for a company that prides itself on quality, it only took Me 4 pairs of KLF-30's before I got a pair that the backs didn't come unglued.. Heard they got a bad batch. You'd think that for $1800 for the 30's, or for "any" speaker costing that much, the quality/craftsmanship would've been better....but, oh well. I'm going to change pre-amps, I'm going to use My Acurus RL-11 and see if any difference. Fred
  6. Here is My modest system....I call it "My Best Friend" [] Wanted to hide the surge protecter, but wanted easier access to it. Kind of ruins the look.[]
  7. Just an opinion, but I wish the designers had made the four little 'feet"?, one solid base. I have the KLF-30's, luv em', but figured it was time to add something new. The RF-83 model came to mind. Love big floor standing speakers. The only thing that threw me were the speaker legs [] I'd guess you'd call em'. I realize with the 83's being narrow you had to add some support, but aesthetically they really detract from the look, just my opinion. Though the sound is very impressive. [] Just wanted to express my view Have a wonderful day, Fred
  8. Thank you for the input. Doubt my ears are golden, []. I decided to agree with SWL and go with a 'cleaner, quieter' amp. Seeing how the Rotel matches what I already have the decision process just became much easier after some sleep. [] You're just too funny with this comment Coytee. "Not my fault he's got defective ears.... " Think I'd agree. [] Yes wuzzer, I pretty much stay around 100-105 db. Have spl set at 100db, occasionally it'll max, put it at 110 setting, think about 115db or so was about my max. My little 130wpc, with volume being no greater than barely 11 o'clock seemed as though it was straining. [] 124db and I think I'd be looking for new speakers. Ya'll have a wonderful day, Fred
  9. Reckon I'm in the correct department. I'm looking for more power for my RF-83's. I'm currently using a Rotel RB-1070, rated @ 130wpc. As I posted earlier I'm looking for a few more db's without having to worry about clipping my amp. I like to be in the 100-110db range. Price wise it's a no-brainer, the XTI-2000 for $699. I got lucky and found a local guitar center that carries the amp/brand. Online I found it for $579, but thought it would be nice to give the business locally. The RB-1092 is $2499. Much more than I'd really like to spend, but it would match my Rotel pre-amp and CD player. XTI rated 475/800wpc, 8/4ohms respectively. Rotel rated 500/1000wpc, 8/4ohms respectively. The individual I spoke with at the Guitar Center said that with the RF-83 being rated 250wpc RMS with a peak at 1000watts, that I should go with something that is at or near 500wpc@8ohms. Suppose it's what side of the fence one wants to be on, but the Rotel received awesome kudos, with the Crown so-so. Plus a comment made by a Klipsch member, "SWL" made me reconsider leaning towards Crown. His quote: Reckon I'm in the correct department. I'm looking for more power for my RF-83's. I use Crown XTI 2000's with RF-7's in a bi-amp configuration and absolutely love them. On the other hand.....The XTI's powering the 7's in a normal two-channel setup doesn't do anything for me unfortunately." Didn't know how to do that quote box. I searched the archives but didn't find anything, but does anyone have the RB-1092? Maybe the older RB-1090 hooked up to a pair of Klipsch? One last question. Why such a price disparity with the prices? Is it because supposed audiophiles supposedly have money and musician's are poorer? Just seems odd. 10. For Jay48195, is the XTI1000 rating sufficient. What levels do You choose to listen at? Or should I maybe consider the XTI2000 which is 475w@8--800w@4? Obviously at least I think, being I'm no electronics whiz, would having all that extra power be better? Also I was hoping a Pro shop here in Maine would carry Crown but no luck. They did recommend the QSC brand. I looked at the GX3. but it's not made for 2 ohm loads. Would I have to worry about a 2 ohm load with the RF-83? The GX-5 is okay for that. Both amps also accept RCA connects if it matters. GX-3 was rated for 300w@8---425@4, cost $300. GX-5 was rated 500w@8---700w@4, cost $400. Though I don't like the adjustable frequency knobs on front panel. Seems this started so simple for a simple guy , now I'm like way confused . I basically would just like sustainable 100-105db, without worries of amp being clipped. Thanks, Fred
  11. Thx Jay I just googled the Crown XTI1000, clicked first place it came upon, ZZSounds.com, new is $499. I see that You own one, I'm not familiar but it looks like a proffesional amp. Will it connect easily? I see the spkr inputs are ok, will the preamp inputs require a different connect? Thanks, Fred
  12. Thank you all for your replies. As for bridging, I understand I'd have to go inside the amp, so I'll just have to be happy with the volume I'm able to achieve now. [] Nah JDM56, I'm only 47, guess I'm a few years away from 'geezer' status, lol. Too funny. Hi Vital, as for the differences between the two, I'm an 'odd' one in that I tend to like something by their looks. I guess it's something about the 2 12's and the extra little width of the cabinet, tho not as deep. Actually I could listen to either one all day. It would be nice I suppose to have that much power in reserve as the Crown's. But, I already scrimped and saved to get the RF-83's, so the Crown's are way out of my range, but thanks for the link. So all in all I guess I'll just tame down my listening level to the high 90's, and just have to be satisfied.
  13. Speakers will share duties with KLF-30's. I like both, but the 30's still remain my favorite, but this question is specifically for the RF-83's. My question has to do with SPL level and amplifier output. Aside from spkrs my system consists of all Rotel. RB-1070 amp---RC-1070 preamp---RCD-1072 cd player. Ooops, also have an Audio Control EQ101 SeriesIII equalizer. My normal listening using a Radio Shack spl meter is between 98 and almost to 110db. All reading A-weighted. On average I'd say 100db A-weighted. The volume control at these levels is approximately 11 o'clock, and never further. Problem is, I still want a little more volume level. As far as the Eq goes, very rarely do I have it in the loop. If need be it is only used sparingly to adust for major rises/dips in certain frequencies. The RB-1070 is rated at 130wpc, with it able to be bridged to provide 360wpc. I think what I'd like is maybe 10 or more db. Are these spkrs able to provide AND sustain such a high db output? I'm assuming most would recommend I bridge the amp? Yes I've had my hearing tested, all came out Ok. Speakers are 6 1/2ft apart, 1 ft from rear, about 1-1 1/12 from corner. Seating position is appx 7-8 ft from spkrs which are slightly toed in. Any thoughts? Just one thing, listening lower than what I already do not really an option. I do hope to have a digital cam so I can share My best friend, lol. Thanks in advance, Fred
