  1. For filling the house, nothing comes close to the Klipschorn. And it's definitely got the vintage mojo.
  2. Saw him at the Fillmore back in the day. Sigh
  3. I heard Khorns in a loft with a somewhat similar setup to the one you describe, though the corners themselves were full height. Smallish spacing but opening to a large space. I thought it worked exceptionally well.
  4. Imogen Heap is your niece??!! WOW![Y] Thanks for sharing.
  5. They look wonderful. Do the trade, take them home, hook them up and ENJOY!
  6. 1984.If all is tip-top, figure around 2k.
  7. What wood finish? Post the model #. It will be something like KCBR or KBWO or KBOO. I'd say in the $1800-2400 depending on veneer & cabinet type
  8. I've got a Conrad-Johnson PV11 I'd let go for $350. It's black, linestage only (no phono) and cosmetically imperfect.
  9. After Nancy & her mother sent a care package to Iraq (or was it Kuwait?) to their cousin during the first Gulf War, they were astonished to receive a thank you note from Gen. Norman hisself, accompanied by a photo of the General & Nancy's cousin sharing the treats in the quarters they shared. We still have the pic. We had no idea. That cousin retired a General himself. And now Nancy's sister is dating a retired Air Force general...a fine man by all accounts.
  10. Louder, room-filling sound? Oh yes, without a doubt. Deeper bass? Should be, but note above comments about room.. Placement will help determine. The B&W is no slouch, but with the Cornwalls you'll get a dynamic ease and headroom that may be new to you. They'll sound gread with the Silverline gear. The price is stupid low...historic deal. Just jump.
  11. Our daughter started grad school at Baylor in August. We went up with a load of her belongings. Beautiful drive on wonderful Texas secondary roads...but I must say that Waco is, well, shabby. I was taken aback at what a dump the place is. Baylor is noce, though. As there is a paucity of worthwhile eating places, the restaurant ought to do well.
  12. Almost frightening! I'm buying stock in ConEd...heh.
  13. I read only the original post, so forgive me if I cover ground already traveled. We home schooled our two with fine results, despite our, uh, "relaxed" approach.[:|] Your critique hits the mark as far as self-serving motivations by those with a stake in the system. I think the methodology and even the aim of higher education has similarly gone astray as well and has become self-serving and self-perpetuating. If we are not teaching our students to think, perceive, weigh, critique, and HOW to learn, we are not teaching. Too much of college has become glorified trade school, no? A return to a wide-ranging, holistic grounding in classic liberal arts...in the great works of Western civilization, is basic to producing educated humans. The current system produces useful automatons.
  14. We were in a bar in uptpwn New Orleans watching Marva Wright when this tall gla asked if she could sit with us. I immediately recognized her as Marcia. It was a fun evening. Marva saw her and brought her up for a few tunes.
  15. I love the unbridled joy and enthusiasm. Infectious. Makes me smile...
  16. Depends on finish. Birch raw? Perhaps. Walnut or oak veneer? Careful! You'll never sand past plant rings. Sorry. From the label in the back, what is the model number (actually, letters. Like HBR, HOW, HWL, etc.)?
  17. We pumped a fine EMI recording of Sousa marches through our Khorns yesterday for the Fourth. As always they sounded great.
  18. Funny name for an eatery. Our daughter will be making a similar move this summer, from Wilmington DE (basically suburban Philly) to Waco to pursue her PhD at Baylor.
  19. Another great label is Nonesuch. Also, many issues by Musical Heritage Society (MHS) are nice.
  20. Are they all vintage? (50s-70s) More recent LPs by harmonia mundi & Erato sound amazing. I have a harmonia mundi sampler LP that sounds as good as anything I've ever heard. For my taste, the old RCAs sound great...just about any of them. Lots of good performances there. Though they're not much admired, some of the 60s and 70s Columbia LPs can sound good. Philips & DG LPs from the 70s are all quite nice with good vinyl quality. I agree with the assessment of old Mercury Living Presence LPs. Heavily hyped, but I find them brash, saturated and lacking a sense of any space. There are some great performances on the label, though. That said, their solo works (Janos Starker on cello) can be very ncie.
  21. The phono section is inherently noisier than the line sections. It will make its own hiss. Does the noise go away when you switch to another input?
  22. The Universals you suggested are great crossovers. To my ears they are a true upgrade from refreshed stock AA crossovers and they are flexible.
  23. If you're loving the sound, don't touch a thing. After you've become thoroughly inured to their sound, say after a year, you'll really notice the improvement when you freshen or upgrade your crossovers.
  24. If you're in the US, that's well above the going rate these days. If they're particularly minty, perhaps 3k.
