  1. Electrically, we really need these types of power when speakers like the P-39f have impedance that gets very nasty (at certain frequencies phase is very negative and impedance magnitude is very low). I simply don't trust that even a real 50 watt amp will supply a real 50 watts for a load that drops down to 2 ohms and a negative 45 degree phase angle. I flat out would not trust name plates, I believe they assume a purely resistive load and a constant speaker impedance. Why use such an amp for large speakers having 3 woofers when decent amps are so cheap? Whatever happened to over engineering something and having extra margin? I'd much rather have a really beefy power supply to handle cases when songs are very dynamic and speaker impedance swings dramatically. Such an amp is also good for almost any speaker out there, so I'll never have to upgrade my amps (saves me money in the long run). It's not going to hurt anything, especially when one sets a max volume limit in the processor's menu. Disclaimer: I am an EE but I didn't specialize in audio, rather power systems.
  2. The Marantz isn't bad. I sold my Marantz AV8801 and replaced it with an Emotiva XMC-1 made in Tennessee (built and designed at their facility). If you want "the best" stereo and 7.2 sound, the XMC-1 is it for anything under $10k. No extra features though like the Marantz such as Dolby Atmos, etc.. just sound on par with Datastat, Anthem and other really expensive gear.
  3. Never mind, I think you are in the UK (noticed one of your other posts)? Emotiva will not ship the XPR amps over seas I would wait for the Gen 3 of the XPA line. I've read the current XPA line will have a hiss, but the new amps will have a lower noise floor more similar to the XPR-2 I recommended.
  4. Congrats! Why not order an XPR-2 (1000 watts into 4 ohms matching the P39f's 1000W RMS rating perfectly). I think there is also a used one on ebay, but I would call Emotiva as they were just on sale 20% off last week. I bet they would honor the 20% off if you sweet talked them some. There's a 30 day return policy, but return shipping would be expensive. The XPR-2 says you need a 20 amp outlet, but they run fine off 15 amp outlets using this cord: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GMPVAK6 Emotiva, can tell you more, but this is really just to comply with the CE rating on the amp. The Emotiva head has a post somewhere that talks about this. If you ever need the extra power, I would run a 220V circuit.
  5. Try this track for a demo, just found it tonight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK5Z2FkEuGg Some serious dynamic range on this CD: http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/84669
  6. The new XPA Gen 3 amps that are not out yet might compare to an XPR-5 for most folks. I think there are some decent switching power supply designs and I trust Emotiva's engineers to do a decent job, so I'm not going to say it's not possible some day. For sure the XPA Gen 3 will beat the XPA Gen 2 stuff. No way can they provide the raw power of the XPR-1's. I have no doubts the XPR-1's will do 1750 watts continuous into 4 ohms if I ever feel the need to upgrade my house wiring with dedicated circuits. I have my XMC-1 max volume set to 0dB and my two XPR-1's share a 15 amp circuit now, so I don't get near the continuous power rating. Don't need any mishaps with the volume control! Here's a burst test showing the power of these:
  7. Challenge #2: This site has some nice tests to see what the softest sound you can hear in your room is (e.g. the audible dynamic range): http://www.audiocheck.net/blindtests_dynamic.php?dyna=72 I scored 72dB with 10/10. Same score on the 78dB test: 10/10, yay! http://www.audiocheck.net/blindtests_dynamic.php?dyna=78 My room is very well treated with absorption panels and lots of bass traps too. My amps and preamp are very low noise (XMC-1 and XPR-1's) which is obviously helping. The static doesn't drive me out of the room either, so I'm not cheating, but I'm too lazy to find my SPL meter to be sure. PS: yes, I hear "alright."
  8. The XPR-1's are decent for the money: http://hometheaterhifi.com/reviews/amplifier/power-amplifier/emotiva-xpr-1-monoblock-power-amplifier/ Bought a pair on ebay for $1800 but had to drive since they were local pickup only! I went from an ATI AT2007 7 channel amp to these. The difference is clearly audible, but only at peaks in very dynamics songs. It also seems drums have a tiny bit more punch, but this is hard to say with certainty. The rest of the time, I would say it sounds the same as it did before. For me the difference was mainly in transient parts of tracks, no where else do I know for sure I hear a difference. I already sold my old amp, but I did intend to measure and catch what was going on at these peaks with my digital oscilloscope. The difference is 100% audible at these peaks though. Before things sounded harsh just at these peaks, now they sound smooth and natural at all volume levels even for the same peaks. The P-39f's have some nasty impedance swings though (solid line) and phase (dashed line): Taken from: http://www.stereophile.com/content/klipsch-palladium-p-39f-loudspeaker-measurements#VTlJkBowbRmPIBo2.97 I don't think most Klipsch speakers would benefit from the kind of headroom I am using now, but we seriously shouldn't expect a little tube amp or an AVR to put the kind of current out right? I suspect my RF-83's would have sounded better to, but I don't have them anymore so I can't try. I could have "gotten by" with the Emotiva XPR-2 amp, but why when the extra headroom was only $200?
  9. On ebay . If someone wants it, please PM me though.
  10. I have two folks wanting it. I think one will pay mesoon., so I pulled it from eBay.
  11. Dang, looks like you guys finally got your wish: "This video previously contained a copyrighted audio track. Due to a claim by a copyright holder, the audio track has been muted."
  12. I'll negotiate a little on shipping, but you need to act fast before ebay. This is really a mint condition amp that sells for almost $4495 new. It's made in the US with quality components. I know one of you wants this.
  13. Which crossover is that? Thanks! Jeeze Dean, i agree with your statement but you, sir, are starting to slum it.
  14. It's not that simple. There's still the "law of large numbers" in statistics. Enough tickets sold, someone will win. How many die each year from being hit by an android? Zero I'd guess. How many win these jack pots each year around the world? More than one I'm pretty sure
  15. The lottery is fun. But we shouldn't leave our future up to luck. Most of the country is truly screwed. I'm not a prepper, but I'm thinking about stocking up on ammo, Klipsch speakers and food just in case The fact that more folks aren't Libertarians show how screwed up our country is. Obama and Bush have made me a believer in the Libertarian movement.
  16. Daily rant: The problem is half of America doesn't have any money left over at the end of the week, let alone would they ever be able to buy a home. It's insane how living paycheck to paycheck has become the norm for half of our citizens. I'm not saying folks being poor isn't entirely their fault. I grew up on welfare, but put myself through college with grants and a few loans, got my engineering degree and have a decent job. But, my sister also went to college (mainly cause her degree doesn't pay much and she wanted to make a difference so took a low paying non-for profit job to do that), and lives paycheck to paycheck. I see lots of folks who graduated college working at best buy and other places making $10-11/hour! I made more than that when I was 19 and that was 18 years ago. I have to wonder why folks think it's ok to pay their employees a wage that is not livable, etc... But, I also have to wonder why the nice kid at best buy thought history would be a great major with a sound financial future. No way can HALF the workforce do everything you list when they can't even pay rent on time. This next generation is truly SOL. People have to learn to stop picking their degree and job based on what feels good (what happened to going to the career center and just picking one that paid a decent starting wage that's how I picked mine), and be willing to either learn a trade that pays well or study a major that will require a lot of their free time but pays off in a few years. This is basic common sense, and can be modeled in excel in less than an hour using simple techniques like net present value. If said major isn't likely to pay off, how about you pick a different one? We aren't teaching kids how to think financially sound and be resourceful and it will eventually kill our economy. To make things worse, there are poor kids like I was who are doubly screwed as most of their parents are dirt bags, they have no one to learn from or look up to, and no one telling them to go to college. To make matters most school systems are completely SOL and broken, but no one cares since they move out of the city in the nice suburbs (where I live). Then you have dip !@#$ on fox news who make a million a year saying how we should essentially stop feeding these kids who are on welfare. Don't get me wrong, I used to be a big time republican, but the stuff I hear my ex party spout is none-sense. Like trickle down economics: um no, if folks don't make enough money to live, they aren't going to buy any goods duh... More tax breaks for the rich, umm no most of them get their income taxed at the capital gains tax rate which is much lower than mine... etc... I will vote for Rand Paul though.
  17. I have my beagle keeping it warm for you. Feel free to call if you are ever headed my way.
  18. I didn't know I was interested until seeing the price. I thought this might have been obvious, but thanks for letting me know your thoughts I really hope someone here gets them... An excellent deal. I would buy them and put them in a closet until the XMR-1 comes out with Atmos and DTS-X. youve been around long enough to know that most business happens via PM. i try and always be courteous and let others know when i am interested and send a pm. i hate when i am the first one to publicly say i want something and the seller say I'm #6 in line, and I'm sitting here like uhhhh one hour went by and I'm the only one to comment on a thread. lol but to each their own. no biggie.
  19. Thanks! I didn't know his history here. It just looks strange seeing $12k worth of stuff posted, and only one picture. I wish he'd have PM'd me on the Palladiums, didn't see him update the post. I would have bought all 4 for when I move in a few years and have space for Atmos.
  20. Can you please post a pic with all this stuff together, so we know you are legit? Or please take a picture of you standing in front of each item since your post count is low and post that. I mean no disrespect, it's just that your post count is low and every price you list is below market. I may buy something too if you do this for us. This is a polite request, please don't take it the wrong way.
  21. Lowered the ship price to $425 + shipping. I am near Columbia, SC so I'd think east coast shipping would be very cheap.
  22. Since it doesn't have the "d" at the end of the model number, I would assume it lacks Darbee. After selling $4k+ worth of stuff last week on craigslist, I now fully understand the meaning of "flake." I think it's worth doing though, average a few items a day and a lot of it I was going to donate. I'll take cash over a small tax credit any day.
  23. I wish this would have shown up in a week or so... reworking gear and might need this for a second system! The preamp on these are very very good. The digital volume control on the 105 is out of this world. Never heard so much detail at low volumes.
